I love this series, and I bought the audio series to share it with my boyfriend. The first book's audio quality leaves much to be desired. I also wish there was an unabridged version available. While this version gives a good feel for the overall story, I very much miss the rest (the extra characterization of minor characters, how the guild runs, etc).
One of my favorite McCaffrey books, I was really looking forward to it, but the crackling of the sound quality is awful!
First (and this is my own stupid fault for not noticing before buying), it's an abridged version. At under three hours, there's less than half the novel here.
Second, the audio quality is truly terrible. It sounds like the reader has their head stuffed in a cotton-lined bucket. Muffled, dull and damned near unlistenable.
The way half or more of it has been edited out.
The reader might, in other projects, be quite good--but in this one, the terrible quality of the recording overrides anything she might bring to the story.
The audio is bad enough that I haven't been able to finish it, and I'd like a refund so...no.
Don't waste your money or credits.
The clarity of the download was difficult to listen to. I might have been the American accent but others have been OK. Also the abbreviation has missed all those small personal details that make this a worthwhile author.
I like her books but will not get another abridged version
Her voice may be OK but the recording was bad
Disappointment verging on sadness at the loss of a good book
As long as it is not an abridged version
Make the recording an unabridged version. To many "little details" that are not important, but really round out the book, are missing from this abridged version. Things like the Symbiant transaction makes the senses so much more sensitive, including eyesite and that is why Killa needed contacts off world.
Didn't have one
If you have read the book, you will be sorely disappointed in the abridged version. If you have not, you might enjoy, but will have missed so many little things that make the book so much more enjoyable.
A book that I love, CRYSTAL SINGER deserves 2 improvements: to be unabridged, and to be reproduced on good sound equipment. Adrienne Barbeau also deserves good sound equipment. However, since this is what is currently available, I will listen to it again. I've been hooked on the song of the crystal ranges since I first read this.
I have read this Story so many times. I was sad it was Abridged but my Brain added the extra parts. The rewrite for this version was done well. The narrator was very good, the audio quality was iffy. But Still a wonderful Listen.
Yes, Anne M. Is one of my favorite authors.
Yes if quality of recording were better.
I already loved the full story so hearing parts of it was fun.
If you did an unabridged version I might be interested in listening again.
After listening to the second book "Killashandra" which does not suffer the poor audio quality of this or the third book "Crystal Line," the narrator was fine if fast paced. It's the really bad quality of the audio recording that makes this audio book somewhat unpleasant to listen to. While this is the abridged version, the choices made on what scenes or portions to drop affected the story minimally. I'm not a fan of the abridged formats, but this one was pretty well done.
Killa of course. This character is a bit more developed than is usually the case with Anne McCaffrey's writing. As the protagonist, it's not too surprising that it's the case.
Adrienne Barbeau reads with proper stress and emotion when called for. I heard none of the awkward emotive breaks between what is spoken and the content of the text that you sometimes get in audio books.
