Publisher's summary

The eldest daughter is often doomed in fairy tales. But Bella - Isabella Beauchamps, daughter of a wealthy merchant - vows to escape the usual pitfalls.

Anxious to avoid the “traditional” path, Bella dons a red cloak and ventures into the forbidden forest to consult with "Granny," the local wisewoman.

But on the way home she's attacked by a wolf - who turns out to be a cursed nobleman! Secluded in his castle, Bella is torn between her family and this strange man who creates marvelous inventions and makes her laugh - when he isn't howling at the moon.

Breaking spells is never easy. But a determined beauty, a wizard (after all, he's only an occasional werewolf) and a little godmotherly interference might just be able to bring about a happy ending.

A good read for lovers of fantasy . . . .

Book 1, 5 and 6 are the best of this series to date.

The villain is pretty easy to pick out from the get go but aside from that the story still holds the readers interest with good character and world building.

If you were expecting to read a copy of Red Riding Hood you have the wrong book. The story does however doe include a female lead, Isabella who wears a red cloak, a "Granny", a wise old woman, who she visits who lives in the woods out side town, a game keeper and well a were wolf and even a step mother and step sisters thrown into the mix along with sorcerers, invisible servants, curses, spells and well i guess you need to read it to find out how all this comes together and of course the romance and life threatening encounters . . .

It's a good read and well worth adding to your library

Mercedes Lackey dropped the ball a bit after the first book but picked it up again with books 5 and 6

although each story is separate in its own right characters do appear from previous books but in the main aside from the godmother Elena and her household non of the previous books main chracters are a common thread though out this series.

Unlike the Tradition . . .

I would recommend this book and series bearing in mind the above comments on some of the books in the series which don't match up to the quality of books 1, 5 and 6 but are still readable.

Comments made above are obviously a reflection of my current taste and opinions.

Book 6 and maybe the best in series

This is the 6th book in the series and I think perhaps my favorite one. The story didn't start slowly like many of the others have and while it was apparent the whole time the answer to the difficulty in the story etc, it was still a fun read. Excellent brain candy and a wonderful narrator.

unsatisfying.

I had heard this was one of the better ones in the series, but I disagree. the story kept pushing the girl away from the beast and towards the huntsman, but then it would harshly snap back to the beast by explaining why the huntsman was awful. the huntsman was a much more developed character than the beast, who didn't do ANYTHING the entire book except mope. this book series has been full of dissapointments.she should have stopped after the 1st one.

I really enjoy this author and narrator. Mercedes Lackey has rewoven many of the classic fairy tales in her Five Hundred Kingdoms series...to great effect!

Another excellent story

I read this when it first came out and remembered enjoying it. When I discovered the audio edition I knew it would be exactly what I needed for a summer road trip.

Perfection in fairy tale retelling; best of series

This is my favorite in the Five Hundred Kingdoms. It's wonderful storytelling, with compelling, complicated characters, living in and shaping a skillfully built world. Elana from the first book plays her part, a bonus. I simple love it! A perfect fairytale, twisted and modernized, but in an old "other world". This book has no flaws, for me. Possibly my favorite Mercedes Lackey. Lovely narration, too.

Best of the Best

So far this has been my favorite of the Five Hundred Kingdom series. I accidentally listened to this be our of order but it didn’t matter at all. I loved the retelling of one of my favorite classic fairy tales and enjoyed all the twists and turns it took to get to the very satisfying ending. I highly recommend!

Great Story

I loved this book. It is probably one of the best ones in the series. So it's a little predictable; but I do love a neat, tidy, happy ending. I wasn't disappointed.
