Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Very Engaging book

Great book for my drive to and from work. The storyline is a throwback to the days of knights and dragons and magic.

awesome

The guy who.is narrating this book is excellent. He really gets into each character and you know by his voice who he is! Great job!!

I love this book but wish there was a different narrator

I wish audible had a choice of narration. I am having a hard time getting through this book with the narrators voices. Some of them are just VERY off. Gendry is supposed to be 15 years old and sounds like an old man. The pronunciation of names changes every chapter. Petyr is pronounced PAY TAR? Its honestly just ruining the immersion for me.

Replace the narrator

Roy Dotrice has a lot of gifts. A great voice, mastery of various British and Australian accents, and excellent acting ability, but one great flaw: A horrific memory. After listening to the entire series, it is incredibly obvious that he can't keep which accents and voicings he uses for characters straight. The most glaring examples are: Arya, Tyrion, Mace Tyrell, Cercei, and most of the ironborn. These will change accents between (and sometimes within) books. For example, Arya goes from a British accent to Irish through the course of the books. This doesn't even make logical sense, as he continues to narrate her siblings with British accents. It's incredibly jarring.

Similarly, he mispronounces words constantly. The most glaring examples are the word Trebuchet (which he manages to pronounce correctly in one or two books before going back to screwing it up) and some names, like Petyr. It's so bad, it made me look up Mr. Dotrice to see if he had Alzheimer's. Regardless, despite the parts of the books that he does wonderfully, I think his narration is the one glaring flaw in all of these books.

Excellent book and Narration.

The Narrator doesn’t excellent job of trying to give each character its own distinct voice. The narrator is easy to listen to and fun
