Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Featured Article: The Best Audiobook Series of All Time by Genre

What makes a good audiobook series? There are as many answers to this question as there are listeners. For some, it might be epic battles. For others, it might be ongoing romantic twists and tensions. For still others, it might be elongated character studies or an in-depth analysis of a particular time and place. But the universal element of a truly great series is that it sticks with you long after the last word. These are our favorites from every major genre.

I liked it!

even after having seen the show, listening to this was enjoyable. the narration is very well done. if I had one complaint, it would be that a lot of the voiced used are very similar, however that seems hard to avoid since the story has like 2 million characters. at least roy dotrice doesn't do weird lady voiced the way some voice actors do-- I can't stand it when all the women in a story sound like tired drag queens

Roy Dotrice brings words to life

I just started listening to this series, I find my favorite way to enjoy the books is by reading while listening to Roy Dotrice. He makes the world your reading about easier to picture in your head

Roy...

So when they replace Roy (since he died in 2017) for Winds and Dream, they should have the new narrator reread the 5 existing books... for the sake of continuity. Yes.. err... continuity.

Breach of Contract

This was a great book and a great reader, but I am sorry to say that Audible is not living up to their advertisement and after listening to the book once they are no longer allowing me to download and listen to it again. Be careful of the promise to have access to your your books after the initial purchase, i now have 5 books they are no longer allowing me to download...all in the GoT series.

great

second time reading the series and I think this is my second favorite book, so far. It's a little confusing sometimes when the narrator says some of the names because they pronounced differently in the tv series, and you would think that GRRM would make the names were pronunciated right on television so I got to wonder who's wrong lol, but other than that great story.

Fantastic!

Roy Dotrice gives a powerful performance of all the characters, especially Lady Stark. A very worthwhile listen!

Best story I’ve ever heard

The ASOIAF series is hands down the best story I have ever heard, and it blows my mind that it all exists in the mind of one man. The only thing I didn’t like about the audio book is the weird ways he pronounces the names, and how he gives many of the characters really strange voices that seem out of character. But it doesn’t take away from the beauty of the story!

Incredible

Great like the first book. There is a lot of setup for the next book, but there is no feeling of incompleteness. And the ominous buildup to Blackwater is amazing
