Publisher's summary

A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. And from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.

Critic reviews

Locus Award, 1999

"A truly epic fantasy.... The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail...for the comparatively modest role of magic...and for its magnificent action-filled climax.... [Martin] provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." (Publishers Weekly)

"Fans of epic fantasy should appreciate this lavishly detailed sequel to A Game of Thrones." (Library Journal)

"Dotrice's range of vocal tones, from gravelly and commanding to silkenly dangerous, creates a mood of insistence that holds the listener captive throughout the epic story." (AudioFile)

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

Good but not great

It felt like a lot of build up with very little pay off. A lot of things happened but when the story ends you don't feel like anything was done.

great narrator

narrator is great, pleasant voice, easy to listen to, and uses different voices for characters without making them sickeningly cartoonish. effective enough that you can tell one character from the other based on voice

Great Saga

Any additional comments?

This book is about as good as the 1st one. I, like some other reviewers do wish that sometimes the good guys would win! Maybe they will in later books if they aren't all dead or or or? Does make a change though, not so predictable.Still can't beat Martin/Dotrice. I have truly enjoyed listening to the series thus far and am about to move to Book 3' A Song of Fire and Ice. I had been putting off listening to this series as I didn't think any book could be as good as the reviews stated, but I was wrong. So far the series is that good!I can't imagine that a TV series can do the books justice, look at some of Steven Kings movies.....the books are always better and the way Dotrice reads if you close your eyes and 'imagine' you can almost believe you are listening to a Play. I don't know how I would have had enough time to read the books so thanks Audible! If you like what I call soft fantasy, because they aren't over the top unbelievable and could very well be a cross between a time before time and the Middle Ages, then you will definitely enjoy this series (well so far anyway). I am a critical reviewer when I do decide to write one so you can trust if I liked it then it has all the obligatory parts that make up a great 'listen'; Drama, Adventure, Suspense, Humor, not too much romance/sex, good character development and great writing skills!

No character is sacred.

Don't fall in love with the characters, they all get the axe. Truly unpredictable story.

Great book, good narrator

Big fan of this series and of Roy Dotrice (RIP). he doesn't do a great job for female voices but other than that, I have no complaints
