Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

A fun listen: definitely worth a credit.

Would you listen to 14 again? Why?

I wouldn't listen to this again because the central mystery is solved.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Funny, stereoptyped accents for female characters

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

The author needs to come up with an alternative phrase that expresses the experience of taking the first sip from a new beer.

A solid 4.0

This book had me for the first 2/3rds, then kind of lost me at the end. Still a fun read. I'm sure everyone with three arms likes it.

Surprisingly Good

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It was a great story and, though strange, was intriguing.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tik. She was hilarious and so well done. I loved her interactons.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

The different voices and accents. I was blown away by his ability to perfect an accent/voice/personality for each character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Several parts made me laugh. There are some great exchanges that the narrator executes perfectly.

OK

Any additional comments?

This isn't my usual genre, but decided to listen to Cline's 14. It's a decent book, kept my attention. A little odd in some places, but overall pretty decent.

Great idea for a story fell a bit flat

I thought the idea for the story was great but how it all turned out was a bit meh. Good listen still!

An engaging book with an unexpected ending.

This was an easy listen. The story grabbed me early and kept me engaged. I recommended it to my husband and daughter who have very divergent tastes in books- my husband likes mysteries and books about golf, my daughter likes contemporary fiction. Both loved this book. The ending was a surprise for me and I'm not sure yet how I feel about it. Its worth a credit and I would recommend it to others.
