Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Entertaining

This is one of those books that is not deep on any level. It's just wierd entertainment. Look to something else if you are looking for character development or theme... If you want the odd and bit of the macabre, then this is your book.

Unique, Engaging Story

This was a unique and very interesting story. It was neither a typical mystery nor a typical sci-fi story. It was something wholly unto itself and whatever it was, I enjoyed it immensely.

The characters were interesting and well portrayed. The individuality of the relatively large cast and how well their personalities fitted into the story and the things that happened there is definitely one of those things that makes the book work so well.

The creativity of the plot paired with the visual writing style pulled me firmly into the world of the story and let me experience everything first hand. It was a great ride from start to finish. The initial pacing could easily have seemed slow in the beginning when everything was being set up, but it didn't because there was always just enough interest and sense that something was "off" woven into the flow that it kept you engaged.

Overall, I was very impressed and I recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting, fun, engaging read.

Lovecraft meets TV's Friends

Had to wear headphones sneakily at work, couldn't stop listening. Great story and narration. Would recommend to anyone who loves mystery thrillers with some sci fi thrown in.

Good Story, disappointing "Surprise"

This is a good book. The narrator does a decent job, and the story is gripping. If you like mysterious sci-fi, you'll probably like this book. I certainly did. There was only one disappointment. I read review after review saying that I'd never guess the "surprise" ending. Well, I say that unless you're kind of dim you're going to know what the big secret is about a third of the way through the book. I kept thinking "Everyone said it was a big surprise, so it can't possibly be THAT." It was THAT.

It's OK, though. The big super-secret suprise wasn't really the reason why this is a good book. It's the journey along the way that makes it. There are some pretty cool characters, some great action, and some tight suspense (even if you've figured out the secret already). You'll notice I gave it four stars.

A New Favorite

This is one of the best new stories I've heard/read in a while. It starts as a mystery, and the tenants solve the mystery that is their apartment building. But, the real excitement begins when they solve the mystery. I would recommend "14" as a great modern tail.

I also enjoyed Ray Porters presentation. He gives each character a distinctive and memorable voice.

Scooby-Doo and HP Lovecraft

This was a fun mystery. It wasn't very terrifying but it kept me very engaged. Most of the characters are enjoyable and seemed well thought out.
The house is a mystery and what purpose it serves it unknown. So, new tenant Nate explorers the oddities and finds why there is so little known about the old structure. It separates us.

A book to get wrapped up in!

This is a great story and the narrator truly makes it by using different voices/accents to portray each character. I felt myself getting wrapped up into it very early and listened at every opportunity. I enjoyed the characters so much I was sad it ended, of course that spurred me to read the next book by the same author and narrator.
I enjoy sci-fi so the story was right up my alley but the relationships of the characters made it even more enjoyable. Get this book!!

Same monsters different people

I started working my way backward with the Peter Cline novels. I listened to The Fold first and considered it a fresh story with a good bit of science. The concept was original and I felt like the novel could have gone deeper and been twice as long--- and still would have kept my interest.

When I listened to 14, it appeared to have been the foundation on which The Fold was conceived.

The story had a good pace and the characters were believable-- but I was disappointed that the flying squale and its bugmen were the same in each book. Mr Clive could have used 14 as a precursor to The Fold easily. But didn't.

This reader will continue to work my way through the Cline books, as the above isn't enough to keep me away. Mr Clines imagination holds promise and I look forward to new creatures, situations and characters from this talented author.
