Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

great story, wonderful narration!!

loved it! Clines does a great job of pulling you into the story and as always, Ray Porter knocked it out of the park with the narration!

It's a Sci-Fi Thriller

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. Most of my friends aren't big Sci-Fi fans. (I'm not either, and thought I was downloading a mystery!)

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Great voices. Nicely done.

Need more Clines books on audio

I first started with Clines' X series (looking forward to Ex 3 btw). This book starts out as a mystery, moves into science fiction then pure fantasy. What a ride I blew through it in 3 days. Fantastic story, Ray Porter is one of the best narrators I've heard (he does a lot of the Maberry books).

Loved this book!

I will be listening to more Peter Clines. This was a fun book, a good escape! I was so happy when I feared a "same old, same old" ending and was thrown a twist. Thank you for writing a strong ending for this tale.

The narration was surprisingly good as well. I will also look for more Ray Porter narration.

Can I haz more?

On an impulse, I picked up and read this book called The Fold. No idea what it was. By the end I was dying for a series. Didn’t figure there was one, but it looked like Clines wrote a number of books, so I considered them until I found another one that might be my speed of sci-fi thriller. What a delight to have stumbled across the prequel to The Fold! They’re both plenty odd, and while this one has a couple of sluggish spots, it’s still super fun. I’m looking forward to my next Clines novel.

so i enjoyed it but its not for me.

I enjoyed the book, the performance was great. also the writing was a bit young style, and had too much sex references. like every other line. never ment anyone who talks like that. its also relies heavily on the universe HP lovevraft universe to be effective. but it does not really add, it almost subtracts with how silly parts of it are for the monsters.
