Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

If you enjoyed the show LOST, you'll enjoy this.

Where does 14 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The best part of the book were the characters. They were all enjoyable, different, funny, serious and worked well to enhance the story.

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

The gold finch, because it was another book where the story wasn't as interesting as the various characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

All the scenes with Veke. Her wit and the narrator's dry delivery made me have several LOL moments.

Any additional comments?

Yes, the book had a very over the top portion of the plot, but the journey to that time makes it worth listening too. The show LOST had a cast of many characters, but those characters weren't as enjoyable as these.

Superb narrator, great story.

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

I'm about halfway through. The story is great so far--believable characters, interesting mysteries. But the real surprise is Ray Porter's narration. So often, a poor narrator can ruin even a fantastic story. This is the opposite of that. Porter brings the characters to life with pitch-perfect, easily identifiable voices. Absolutely top notch.

Better suted for a short story

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

sure

Any additional comments?

Ray Porters narration was solid, but I had a hard time getting into the story till well over halfway through it. It was a fun concept but I felt like I had to froce myself to stick with it allot of the time. I think if the plot was condensed down it could make a fun movie.

Interesting, with a lot of action at the end

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed listening to this book. Ray Porter did an excellent job of capturing the different personalities with his voices. The story was well-written but the concept was somewhat far-fetched and hard to become totally invested in. In fact, I was completely entranced with the secrets of the apartment as they were being discovered up till the point where the "Squale" made its appearance. I will refrain from any more detail so as not to spoil the story for others. Still, there was a lot of action and it was a fun listen, if only to find out how it all turned out.

Kept Me Listening

This book is not my usual type of book. When I purchased it, I thought it was a straight forward mystery. but I found it has a sci fi twist. I am not usually a sci fi reader, but the premise of this book was intriguing and kept me listening. Usually I am doing some type of light work while I am listening, housework, etc, but 14 was so interesting that at times I just stopped work and sat down to listen.

Fun mystery

This book asks a lot of questions, and in the end it answers them all. It was a lot of fun and didn’t suffer from the sort of genre disconnect that I got from Clines’ novel “The Fold”.
