Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this audiobook. It was my first one too. I thought it would be a thriller judging by the illustration but it turned out to be so much more. The story is absolutely unbelievable. I never knew where it was going and was absolutely on edge. I loved the story.

I also loved the way it was narrated. Even if the names wouldn't have been mentioned, I would be able to tell who was talking because Ray Porter did a marvelous job with the voices.

All in all, loved this book and recommend it.

Hooked before I knew it - - -

Not great literature, but it doesn't need to be. This book is so well put together and the narration so great---listen just for the pure fun and enjoyment.

It starts out a bit slow, and I could not decide if I wanted to continue listening- then suddenly I had to see what would happen next. It's up and down and here and there, and all the time you know something is coming - you just don't know what!

I was never actually scared while listening, but it does have a great air of suspense.

After looking at this book off and on for over a year, all the positive reviews finally made me too curious to resist. Loved it.

Whatever you do--don't delay--Read NOW!

I bought this book on a whim and resisted listening to it for a while. I am kicking myself for procrastinating. I now understand why this book was one of the top rated books last year. The characters development was very well done. The plot of the book was engaging--how to foil the plans of a cult to end the world using a key that is a building. Veek and Nate, two of the main characters, tease each other and give each other the nicknames of Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo. If anything, the villain, Andrew, I would akin to Scrappy Doo (The annoying nephew of Scooby that needs to be killed off). I found myself laughing and was completely engaged. Once I started reading, I could not stop. The characters of Nate and Veek were a great dynamic duo. I love the narrator and how he made the characters come to life. The only thing that did not make any sense to me was the nature of the cult was not really explained. Mr. Clines mentions that the cult members' bodies were wrong in some way--legs were bending the wrong way. So I was wondering--what were the cult members? A cross between the humans and the people in the "other" place. Mr. Clines mentions that some members of the cult were similar, in a small way, to the people in the other land, but I think it was meant to be a throwaway point. It was significant enough that I still thought on it. I recommend the book--excellent read.

What did I just listen to??

3 stars for excellent character development and incredible narration, but excuse me if I say, wtf?! This book started out great, could have gone so many other directions than it did, then just got.....weird. Really weird. Lots of unanswered questions and I'm left confused by why oh why the author decided on this ending. So much build up for such a let down. Yet, still pretty enjoyable. Im confused by my feelings about this book!

This has been one of the few books which I honestly couldn't stop listening to. Keeps you emerged from start to finish!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Book surprised me! There's not much that surprises me anymore!

Any additional comments?

Quirky story

Any additional comments?

14 is a quirky story well written with an interesting bunch of characters. The effort the author put into character development was worthwhile. A big plot twist takes this story into a genre you might not expect.

Great Read - Great Listen - Great Characters

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

You do not want to read a review with any discussion of this book's plot. This book is best as a leap of faith.I am writing this scant review as a SciFi reader of 50 years. Seriously, just get it. You will enjoy every minute.

Any additional comments?

After you read this please join me in prodding the author to hurry with his next book!

long buildup for little payoff

lots of foreshadowing, well written, but the ending is somewhat disappointing. would make a better short story, a bit light for a novel.

Great Story for 3/4s of the book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - I t was really intriguing, a lot of clues and whodunits throughout the book. Kept me interested. However, it switched gears from plausible to complete fantasy very quickly. I wasn't expecting it and was a little disappointed.

Would you be willing to try another book from Peter Clines? Why or why not?

Sure - but after the ending I would research them a bit more.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Loved how he was able to change his voice into each character. None of them sounded the same. The beginning was a little stiff and hurried but I think most books are until the narrator "gets into it".

Ok

It was fine a bit slow progressing the story. Probably would have been a better read than listen
