Publisher's summary

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life - like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 - turning on a dime.

Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession - to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world - of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful - and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

With a mind-boggling portfolio of 62 novels and more than 200 short stories (and counting!), Stephen King undeniably reigns supreme over literary horror. From Danny Torrance to the dreaded Pennywise, check out some of his most iconic characters with this comprehensive look. (But beware: there are spoilers ahead! So, much like when you press play on a Stephen King audiobook, you should proceed with caution.)

Editor's Pick: Best of the Decade

A nostalgic trip
"Stephen King’s 11.22.63 is a technicolor romp to the past where the root beer tastes better, cars have more class, and listeners are warned to beware the yellow card man. I was not alive in 1963, but after spending 30+ hours listening to narrator Craig Wasson bring these fictional (and real) characters brilliantly to life, I feel like while I didn’t live there, I’ve at least visited for a long weekend. Blending time travel, history, a little romance, and political intrigue, this is an oddly feel-good tale—odd because it's about assassination and comes from the king of horror. The thing is that King also just happens to be a masterful storyteller whose best work of the decade will warm your heart more than scare the hell out of you." — Tricia F., Audible Editor

Wow! So Fun!

Would you consider the audio edition of 11-22-63 to be better than the print version?

I have always loved Stephen King's movies but when I tried reading a couple of books, I just couldn't get into them. I don't know if it was the stream-of-consciousness thing or what, but I was very reserved about the audio version. Oh my gosh, I am SO glad I gave it a try. I LOVED the narrator!! So talented with the voices, but mostly it was his interpretations and inflections that made me love the book. And the story wasn't exactly what I would have expected from King (no real blood or scary intensity and very few immediate danger scenes) but an incredible story of some great characters. I wondered all the way to the last half hour how he was going to wrap it up.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Every time I got in the car, I was glad I had this to listen to. I loved that it was so long - made the fun last!

amazing, riveting, and heart breaking

This was a fantastic book that kept you thinking and wondering about what was going to happen. There was a lot of dynamics going on. I don't think I've enjoyed a Stephen King book as much as this one or The Stand.

Excellent listen, this is my 3rd time through.

The research involved must have been extensive.
So descriptive youre almost there with there.
I highly recommend this story, especially if you love history from The Land of Ago.

A fantastic read/listen

What made the experience of listening to 11-22-63 the most enjoyable?

Well researched and totally gripping, I would highly recommend this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jake was very human, even though what he did is not feasible (going back in time), it was a story I could relate to do and he was a character that I could relate to being!

Which scene was your favorite?

I didn't have a particular favorite.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No way, it is very long. But I loved listening to it!

Any additional comments?

Stephen King is not an author I typically enjoy, but this book was different! I would recommend it even to those that don't like Stephen King's typical style.

Like Wine, It Gets Better

From all the rave reviews, I thought this would be an all-timer audio book...it wasn't. I'm a die hard Stephen King fan. His writing and story telling held true to his well established reputation. But the book was somewhat slow at times (dare I even say tedious) and the narrator didn't have the dynamics to move it forward through those spots. Yes, there definitely is tension, suspense and an endearing love story -- but no umphhh, no panash, and none of the shoot you straight out of your chair twists that we love with King.

However as the story progresses and the characters grow, the book starts to get a hold on the reader/listener. By the end I was hanging on for dear life and wanting a great ending. King did deliver that.

Great from beginning to end!

This was a great novel. Keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end! The fact that it's based on true events just adds to the intrigue, but a great story is woven in as well. Would recommend to anyone - even if you aren't an avid Stephen King reader!
