Publisher's summary

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life - like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 - turning on a dime.

Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession - to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world - of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful - and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Editor's Pick: Best of the Decade

A nostalgic trip
"Stephen King’s 11.22.63 is a technicolor romp to the past where the root beer tastes better, cars have more class, and listeners are warned to beware the yellow card man. I was not alive in 1963, but after spending 30+ hours listening to narrator Craig Wasson bring these fictional (and real) characters brilliantly to life, I feel like while I didn’t live there, I’ve at least visited for a long weekend. Blending time travel, history, a little romance, and political intrigue, this is an oddly feel-good tale—odd because it's about assassination and comes from the king of horror. The thing is that King also just happens to be a masterful storyteller whose best work of the decade will warm your heart more than scare the hell out of you." — Tricia F., Audible Editor

Brilliant Twist on Time Travel

If you are considering this book, I would say you need to be a fan of Stephen King, or a fan of time travel stories, but not necessarily both. The story evolves nicely, so to make a comparison, it's very different from "The Stand" which has far more character development. In fact, I was unable to listen to the stand. Without concrete plot evolution, I found that by a third of the way through the book, I didn't know who anyone was. My brain kept tuning out.

Hopefully that comparison will succeed in explaining that this is not one of those books.

This book was great in keeping your interest most of the time. I have had tried many books that have had that issue.

I try to keep reviews short not to spoil anything, and this story has plenty of developments that you need to appreciate without warning. So, to conclude, well done Stephen, and well done Craig. I wish there were more books like this one.

One of King's Best Novels Yet!!

I don't know how Stephen King is able to crank out 1,000 + page novels, while making it look easy , but I'm glad he does!! Personally, I love novels that portray alternative historical scenarios, but King has taken it to another level in this fascinating story! The narration was phenomenal, I couldn't picture anyone else as Jake Epping / George Abmberson / Puddingtain (ask me again & I'll tell ya the same)! If you've never read any of King's other longer novels like Under the Dome, 'IT', or The Stand, than you know how he strides to give us realistic, 3-dimensional characters! What are you waiting for? Tap the purchase now button & get taken on a wild ride through time & space, problem Derry, ME, all the way down to Dallas-Fort Worth, TX! It's such a realistic ride oh, you'll feel like you're right there, with Jake, as he fights against all odds, to stop one of America's biggest tragedies of the 20th Century, the assassination of JFK!

FYI, if you watched the series on Hulu, as good as it was, you must read this! The show, while entertaining, did the novel absolutely no justice!! That said, after you read the story, if you haven't seen the show, then I highly recommend watching it, but be prepared, as it is very different from the novel! Happy reading, or listing, I should say...

I am still breathless!

As an avid King reader, I too share most of his fans sentiments: his newer stuff is no where as gripping or deep as his old. For a while there it seems like he was writing simply for writing sake. But I'll tell you, Mr. King is back and definitely brought his A game to this masterpiece. I am done reading this book, yet I feel I want to go back to the 1958-63 era. Like Jake Epping, I too wanted to stay, not in Derry of course! I am not going to mention anything about the story or the plot. I just want you to know that if you are looking for a well researched, well thought out, and well written book, don't overlook this one. This is certainly one of Stephen King's top ten novels. One thing you will take from reading 11/22/63 is everything happens for a reason, no matter how tragic. And trying to alter the past will result in dire consequences in the future. Just ask the Yellow Card Man if you ever see him sitting next to the "rabbit hole".

GREAT READ HIGHLY RECOMMEND

The narrator kinda through me off when he is trying to do the voice of Sadie, He just sounded like a 70 year old women with lung cancer. That is my only complaint and its really not that big of deal. So def give it a shot!
