Publisher's summary

This funny fractured fairytale goes behind the scenes of Rumpelstiltskin. "A most magical feat," writes Newbery Honor-winner Kirby Larson, "Liesl Shurtliff spins words into gold."

In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone's joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and she's right.

With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse. To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship - and a cheeky sense of humor - he just might triumph in the end.

Perfect for fans of Ella Enchanted or A Tale Dark and Grimm.

Critic reviews

"Lighthearted and inventive, Rump amusingly expands a classic tale." (Brandon Mull, number one New York Times best-selling author of Fablehaven)

My Class Loved It!

Our school requires this book in the fourth grade. Rather than have the children read it at home, I bought this audiobook to play while the children follow along in their own copies. They love it! It's a fantastic performance, and a great story.

Not Bad!

This is an interesting book, definitely worth a read through. It's a nice re-telling of age old fairy tale of Rumplestiltskin, from his point of view. The author made this story brand new without changing too much of the original story. I liked that! Wasn't too thrilled with the narration but is wasn't terrible. Would I read it again? Maybe not, at least not for a while. Would I read anything else from this author? Definitely! I may not have loved this book but I did like it so that in itself will make me pick up her next books. This is definitely worth a read.
