Editorial reviews

Hank Malone, small-town-Vermont "bad boy," hires New Jersey would-be author Maggie Toone to pretend to be his wife to improve his image so that he can get a business bank loan for his apple orchard. Of course, the inevitable happens, and Hank and Maggie fall in love. C.J. Critt plunges into the frothy romance with gusto, keeping the tempo fast and the interplay between the main characters sexy, rapid-fire, and funny. A plus is Critt's portrayal of a feisty, gun-toting housekeeper, who keeps the action on its toes. Fans of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series should not expect a mystery here. But for light listening pleasure, this fits the bill.

Publisher's summary

Hank Mallone knows he's in trouble when Maggie Toone agrees to pretend to be his wife in order to improve his rogue's reputation. Will his harebrained scheme to get a bank loan for his business backfire once Maggie arrives in his small Vermont town and lets the gossips take a look?

Maggie never expected her employer to be drop-dead handsome, but she's too intrigued by his offer to say no...and too eager to escape a life that made her feel trapped. The deal is strictly business, both agree, until Hank turns out to be every fantasy she ever had.

Fun

Fun book but typical.

Cute

This was a cute story, but not as funny as Janet Evanovich's Plum series. The reader's gravely voice was a bit distracting as well. It was still a nice little escape, though.

Come on Janet. You can do better!

Wow. What a disappointment. I’m an Evanovich fan, but this book is just annoying. Ridiculous, implausible plot, insipid dialogue. Even worse is the narration. She reads it like a cartoon. She makes the protagonist, Maggie, sound like a brainless version of Betty or Veronica, and there are more than enough Jugheads to go around. Overacted and way too chirpy. I’m only on Chapter 9 and I’m not sure I’m going to make it all the way through. If it weren’t for all the sex, I’d wonder if this wasn’t a book aimed at the juvenile crowd. Yuck.

Okay

This wasn’t a bad book but the dialogue was very predictable. I hated the narrator and I wasn’t sure I would be able to get through it. I’ve purchased other audiobooks where I didn’t want to cut it off. This one I found hard to cut on. I was happy when I finally finished.

Such a disappointment

I am a huge fan of Janet Evanovich. I have read and/or listened to over 20 of her books, and loved them all. This was so boring! There was barely any storyline at all. I kept waiting for the action to happen, or some kind of story at all. Nothing. I was relieved when it was over. This was one of her earlier books, so maybe she just wasn't quite there yet. Don't waste your time on this one - there are lots of her other books to pick from.

The narration was excellent!

Very Disappointed.

I am a great follower of Janet Evanovitch's novels, but this one is a real disappointment. Basically what it is is a very explicit Romance novel with a very weak plot. I was listening to it in the car, with my husband and was embarrassed by how graphic it was. If that is your thing, fine. It is not mine.

Not one of her best

thank God this was quick and painless. This must have been one of her earlier works as it read like it was written by a high schooler.
