Editorial reviews

Hank Malone, small-town-Vermont "bad boy," hires New Jersey would-be author Maggie Toone to pretend to be his wife to improve his image so that he can get a business bank loan for his apple orchard. Of course, the inevitable happens, and Hank and Maggie fall in love. C.J. Critt plunges into the frothy romance with gusto, keeping the tempo fast and the interplay between the main characters sexy, rapid-fire, and funny. A plus is Critt's portrayal of a feisty, gun-toting housekeeper, who keeps the action on its toes. Fans of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series should not expect a mystery here. But for light listening pleasure, this fits the bill.

Publisher's summary

Hank Mallone knows he's in trouble when Maggie Toone agrees to pretend to be his wife in order to improve his rogue's reputation. Will his harebrained scheme to get a bank loan for his business backfire once Maggie arrives in his small Vermont town and lets the gossips take a look?

Maggie never expected her employer to be drop-dead handsome, but she's too intrigued by his offer to say no...and too eager to escape a life that made her feel trapped. The deal is strictly business, both agree, until Hank turns out to be every fantasy she ever had.

Fun, Witty, Catchy

This story really grabs your attention without overly using suspense in an annoying way. The main characters are entertaining and feel pretty natural. Love love love this book that spans generations effortlessly.

Early Janet Evanovich - worth a read

I really like all the other books by Janet Evanovich that were re-released. This one wasn't my favorite - the characters weren't as strong as some.... would highly recommend Smitten!

Laughed too hard!

I laughed out loud too hard at several scenes in this book. Fun weekend read. I am surprised Hallmark hasn't picked it up for a movie yet.

True to the series...

Like all in this series a quick listen, upbeat, and happy ending.

For those fans of Evanovich I think you will agree that this series is in desperate need of a new narrator. For most of this book I felt like Grandma Maser was narrating.

All in all a quick listen that is true to theme.

Wife for hire

First, let me say the narrator is beyond horrible. Her voice is incredibly annoying and even speeding the book to 1.7X didn’t help. I suggest before you buy this book you sample it and see if you can handle the voice. The book overall was “just ok” because if the terrible narrator. There were some funny bits, but I really couldn’t connect with the characters and didn’t feel there was chemistry. I think the writing was decent and the story was reasonably interesting and entertaining. I may have given the book more stars if there was a different narrator. Erin Mallon or Savannah Peachwood would have probably made all the difference, and probably would have made the characters more believable.

cheesy and holes in the story

the story is dumb. There are huge holes, it reads like it is a truncated version, but it supposedly is the whole book. the idea that they are in love immediately is far fetched, and the character development is lacking.

Two Thumbs Down

This wasn't a terrible book. Maybe a 6.75 on a 10 point scale, but the narrator made it a 4. Imagine listening to your grandmother read a romance book aloud. I couldn't wait until it was over. Her inflections were the totally opposite of what they should have been. During the steamy part, she had the guy calling the girls name like he was about to ask her to pass the salt. She actually made me despise the heroine. From the way she read the book, it actually made me want the guy to fall for another woman in the end....seriously. I couldn't wait for it to be over, but had to listen once to get my moneys worth. Don't wait your money.

Ridiculous

This story line could have worked out well, but the direction the author gave the story ruined it. Totally unnecessary sex scenes between two people who do not even know each other is not only immoral but stupid. I did not finish this and I wish I could get my credit back!
