Publisher's Summary

Relationships are challenging enough for most single, over-30 women. For level-10 parasensitive Clare Lancaster, they're a minefield. The elite few who know her secret call her a human lie detector, and any falsehood, no matter how subtle or well hidden, sets her blood racing.

Over the years, Clare has come to accept that someone with her extraordinary talents is unlikely to find a suitable mate. And she's even resigned herself to the fact that everyone, to one degree or another, hides behind a façade - including her recently deceased brother-in-law.

When Clare finds the body of Brad McAllister, the golden child of Stone Canyon, Arizona, the posh residents turn a suspicious eye in her direction. As Archer Glazebrook's daughter, Clare is shielded from the law, but not the gossip. It seems that meeting the half sister and family she did not know until seven months ago was a mistake. Now her father summons her from California to play a role in his business empire, and Clare doesn't intend on making the same mistake twice.

But after meeting Jake Salter, Archer's "business consultant", she is convinced that things aren't what they seem. Salter's careful conversation walks a delicate line between truth and deception, revealing and resisting. Something sparks and sizzles between them - something more than the usual electricity between a man and a woman.

Caught in a dizzying storm of secrets, lies, and half-truths, Jake and Clare will plunge into an investigation that demands every bit of their special gifts. Together, they must overcome their mutual distrust in order to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder.

What the Critics Say

"Krentz delivers another evocative romance, complete with engaging dialogue and explicit sex scenes, but the real meat of the plot concerns the sleuthing: that a charismatic alpha male finally meets his mate is icing on another densely plotted Krentz confection." (Publishers Weekly)

"It's on the bottom of my list"

I didn't care for this book because the characters lacked depth and I didn't like the narrating/editing on this book. Nothing about the characters dragged me down into the story or made me want to emotionally invest myself into their situations. Still, I wanted to know what happened to the Arcane society so I hung in there to the end. If the next book in the series is like this, I'll give up.

I struggled the most with the narration style and editing of this book. The editing during conversations between characters sounded choppy and far from fluid. It sounded like the parts were read separately and pasted together, instead of being a fluid conversation. There were too many times when both narrators sounded like very bad actors reading a bad play.

    "Female Narrator seemed to struggle"

White Lies was a rather simple but pleasant story and I wasn't sure what I would think of having two narrators, but figured I would give it a try. For the most part, I didn't mind it at all but wasn't wild about it either.

The issue I had with narration was the female narrator's seeming struggle to attain different voices for different female characters. I'm not sure if her range is limited or if she was trying too hard but the "breathy" voice she created for the heroine's sister made me grit my teeth every time I heard it. The continual stopping for a breath in mid-sentence and the way it was voiced made it sound like that character had emphysema or had just run a marathon. I lost track of the story in the midst of hating the character voice every time she spoke.

Please, no more "breathy" voiced characters.

    "Better the second time around"

This was one of my first Krentz listens and I did lots of eye-rolls the first time I heard it for the two-dimensional characters, stiff and unbelievable plot, and things being just too convenient. I really enjoyed David Colacci's voice and the way he handled his character. Kathy Garver, while absolutely spot-on as far as technique goes, sounded, to my ears, definitely 'too'; too young, too bouncy, too sweet and naive for a woman who knew every time she heard a lie.
On second listen, going into it knowing what to expect (and what not to) I enjoyed it a whole lot more. I still didn't find Ms Garver best-cast for this book, but the whole thing came together much better.
Still, it is what it is, and if you've read Ms Krentz before, you know exactly what to expect; as do I now No regrets for the credit used.

    "Great book...annoying narration!"

I read this book first before I got the audio version. Should have stuck with the book in this case. Having the two narrators was distracting. I have had audio books with two before and enjoyed - not this one. Also, both of these narrators sounded like game-show host wannabes. Not to my taste - the female narrator sounded like she was constantly running out of breath. It was just irritating enough to notice and pull you out of the story constantly. Disappointing as I love this author and this series...

    "Killed by the performance."
What did you like best about White Lies? What did you like least?

The story was as great as Jayne Anne Krentz is famous for. I love all her books, especially the Arcane Series.

What didn’t you like about David Colacci and Kathy Garver ’s performance?

Loved David Colacci's performance. I would have preferred it if he had narrated the entire book. Kathy Garver may be a wonderful reader to others, but her voice to my ears is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I cringe every time I hear her voice. I also am NOT a fan of the multi-narrator layout. Even though it is obvious they made every attempt to make transitions smoothly, I feel jarred every time they change turns.

    Any additional comments?

Audiobooks can often be made or broken by the narrator(s). Fortunately, I was already familiar with this author and the series or else I might have been turned off by the performance of this particular book. I urge people reading this to not turn away from the series just because of this one. Who knows? Maybe it's just me and Kathy's voice sounds like angel-song to you, but I know I will think twice before purchasing any book narrated by her.

    "One of her best!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
What made the experience of listening to White Lies the most enjoyable?

This is a terrific story as usual for JAK. The romance is hot, the characters are interesting, and the story line is fascinating. I have read this novel many times and now I have repeatedly listened to the audio version. Every time I hear/read this I find something new to enjoy. Thanks JAK for a wonderful experience.

What does David Colacci and Kathy Garver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It was fun to hear the sexy flirting between Colacci and Garver.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    White lies and promises.

    "Awesome narrators!"

I've read this book before, but I have to say this team of narrators really brought it to life for me. I wish this team had more collaborations.
I can definitely recommend this book and any other narrated by this team. The best narrated book I have ever listened to!

"I wish I could rate this higher"

I love Nora Roberts and I read this book about a year ago and really liked it. Unfortunately the female narrator ruined this audiobook for me. She "reads" the story, in fact it sounds like an automated machine. There is no feeling in her voice, no show of emotion, so you never feel a connection between the two characters. I got to the point where I didn't care. It has been very difficult for me to finish this one. I'll be sure to note her name so that I never use a credit on her again.
