One of My Favorites in the Cynster Series

Matthew Brenner was perfect to narrate this story, aside that he gave Richard & Catriona Highland brogues when they didn’t have them previously in their own book. His quiet, confident, pensive rolling rumble brought Viscount Breckinridge to life.

In many of the Cynster novels, I get distracted by too many gratuitous intimate encounters, roll my eyes, and press my 10 seconds forward button repeatedly. This novel was, shall we say, appropriately balanced out.

The supporting characters of the three kidnappers, the Highland Laird behind it all, and the newest Lady & Protector, children of Richard and Catriona, become characters as real and vibrant as our main ones. The set up for the next book with the Laird was excellent.

The only soft spot in the plot, in my opinion, is the idea that Timothy didn’t haul her out of there and back home to London the first night. As the “protective male” archetype, that’s what would have happened in real life. Laurens tried to make the reader believe he would have let her continue in her quest for answers to protect her family, that Breckenridge was a partnership type of guy, etc. etc. But no, he would have hauled her out the window and straight back to London, protestations be damned. Regardless, very enjoyable story, characters, and narration.

Who is doing the editing?

Good story, good characters, not so good actor. Catriona not Catrina. Richard is not a Scotsman

Waste of Money

I am a huge fan of Stephanie Laurens, but this book is not worth the money. The heroine is TO STUPID TO LIVE. She's been kidnapped when her rescue come she talks him into letting her stay with her captures to solve a mystery. I turned it off after the first two hours because it was making me angry that such a good writer would put something like this out.

How about some passion?

I used to really enjoy Stephanie Laurens' books, but have realized that the stylized "passion" isn't really all that passionate. The woman is (of course) inexperienced; the man is (of course) highly experienced. And, Breckenridge is more sexually manipulative than the other "heroes" of Ms. Laurens' books. He is methodical and deliberately manipulative in trying to control Heather sexually. He doesn't show any passion - just cold-hearted calculation. And, I couldn't take any more of his experience - (even he lost count of the hundreds of women he has bedded; all of his women; with all of his experience; the ton's most bedded rake...) on and on. Gross. Sexual diseases, anyone? His wife would know that each woman she met was bedded by him. I got about 2/3 through, but just couldn't take it anymore and just didn't care. I am returning it.

Snorefest...

This was tedious, repetitive and boring. The narrator was good but the story was so slow...I was bored most of the time. I forced myself to finish it because I did not want to waste the credit.

Oh dear

Oh this so-called historical romance is to be avoided at all costs. It is neither historical nor romantic, but literally a bodice ripper. I ripped my bodice in desperation at the lack of historical research, the silliness of the story and the hilarious mistakes in language, such as:that will take him down "a peg or three!"

No, I didn't finish it.

Slooooooow going!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More emotional development of characters.

What could Stephanie Laurens have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The interactions between the main characters should have been more frequent, occurred earlier in the novel, and been more believable.

Which character ??? as performed by Matthew Brenher ??? was your favorite?

The Laird, but he was a minor character :(

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration!

Any additional comments?

I could not believe there was love there. The injury/vigil notwithstanding, the interactions between the characters lacked true intimacy and complexity.

Disappointing

The first half is fine, but the second half is so boring - who will admit that they love the other first. It went on forever.

The near death scene was really not believable.

I hope the series gets better, because I didn't like this one.
