Publisher's Summary

From the national best-selling author - the new novel set in the "darkly fascinating world" (SF Site) of the Black Jewels.

Dena Nehele is a land decimated by its past. Once it was ruled by corrupt Queens who were wiped out when the land was cleansed of tainted Blood. Now, only 100 Warlord Princes stand - without a leader and without hope.

Theran Grayhaven is the last of his line, desperate to find the key that reveals a treasure great enough to restore Dena Nehele. But first he needs to find a Queen who remembers the Blood's code of honor and lives by the Old Ways. The woman chosen to rule Dena Nehele, Lady Cassidy, is not beautiful and believes she is not strong. But she may be the only one able to convince bitter men to serve once again.

I like Jack Reacher style characters regardless of setting. Put them in outer space, in modern America, in a military setting, on an alien planet... no worries. Book has non moralistic vigilante-justice? Sign me up! (oh, I read urban fantasy, soft and hard sci-fi, trashy vampire and zombie novels too)

"Not as dark as the trilogy"

I really enjoyed this story. Theran is an ass. Cassidy is the ugly duckling. The story is one of hope and growth and bullying and finding oneself as they mature.

There is a bit too much about Daemon and his Sadist urges though - I thought it was more like an add-on to bring back old characters and had little to add to the actual story of Cassidy and her Court. There is also a little substory about Saetan which was also sort of odd in the context of Cassidy's story, but I guess Bishop wanted to keep us up-to-date on the goings on with the "family".

It's not as dark or heavy as the trilogy, but is quite similar in tone to the Invisible Ring - although it was more about internal angst and in-fighting and stereotypes than fighting versus an external enemy. I'm starting the next in the series right now - it didn't really end in a cliffhanger, but you know there's more to Cassidy's story so you'll want to read the next book in the series to find out what happens.

This is the only book in the series I've listened to in audio and, for the most part, the narration was good - he mispronounces a few words and Jaenelle is read with an "Eastern Canadian?" accent in this book which didn't really fit what I expected. But otherwise, you can tell who's talking from tone/accent and whether or not they are speaking or using psychic communications.

"The accent for Janelle was changed, bad"

In the past books the narrator had used an American youthful accent for Janelle but in this book of the series he changed it to an Irish accent. It was very disappointing and really took away from the character. PLEASE fix it.

"Great story, new characters. Janelle is SCOTTISH??"
Where does The Shadow Queen rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As an audio book, this one ranks pretty low. If I was actually reading it the book would be much higher. This is simply due to one thing: The HORRIBLE Scottish accent that John Sharian does for the main character, Janelle. So disappointing.

What didn’t you like about John Sharian’s performance?

The producers of this book series NEED to have the narrator come back in the studio and re-dub ALL of Janelle's parts. For the 1st five books in the series Janelle, the woman who the entire series is about, has a normal American style accent. Then suddenly in book 6 (the one before this, Tangled Webs) all of a sudden Janelle has a Scottish accent. Not just Scottish, BAD Scottish! I could do a better Scottish accent just based on watching the movie Far and Away. Every single time Janelle speaks it has the same cadence over and over. It's like the only example of a Scottish accent that he knows is from Scottie on Star Trek original series! It's awful, it's distracting, and I make a barfing sound every time she talks. Janelle used to be my #1 favorite character, now she's my least favorite, and it's all because of that stupid horrible accent. Blaah! (barfing sound)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I listen in the car on the way to the grocery store and other places.
The only reason I continued to listen to this story at all was because the focus of the story was on new characters that didn't interact with Janelle very often. Unfortunately Janelle's accent ruins every story.

    Any additional comments?

PLEASE! If anyone from the production company reads this, PLEASE have John Sharian re-record Janelle's lines. We would rather have one of those bad obvious edits throughout the entire book than to have to listen to that really pathetic, badly done, fake, cheesy, unbelievable, "Scottie from Star Trek", repetitive Scottish accent. He needs to re-dub every book that he read Janelle in that terrible fake Scottish accent. I'm returning this book as well as Tangled Webs because they were both very disappointing just because of Scottie Janelle.

    "I liked the story"
What didn’t you like about John Sharian’s performance?

Again the main character of "Witch" has the old crone voice and accent that he used in the last book also. It totally ruins it for me. How the narrator and the producers etc didn't catch this but let it go on for another book is amazing
