Shelly Laurenston turns up the heat with two sizzling novellas.
Christmas Pride: How come all the good-looking ones are insane? That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes, as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy-SEAL bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her...and makes her want more. Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her...in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel.
Shaw's Tail: Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go. Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl, even one who runs with a Pack, can redefine herself. First order of business: Find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

This is the worst narrator I've ever heard
It's like most shifter romances.
She has this weird kind of drawl that completely discracts from the story. I'll probably read other books in the series, but NOT through audible. I nearly couldn't finish listening to this one.
I loved this narrator! She sounds the same as when she read the Sookie Stackhouse books and I don't understand why some reviews say it's been sped up. It sounds great to me. This is the first book by Laurenston that I've read and I enjoyed it very much. I liked the characters and the sarcastic wit. I've already downloaded the next in the series.
Charlotte Kane really helps bring the characters to life. She reads with a natural enthusiasm, without being over dramatic. Her voice range is wonderful.
I hate giving away spoilers so what I liked most about this book was the chemistry between the hero and heroin. Also I found myself laughing out loud more than once and almost blushing at at some sense.
The scene in the restaurant after the heroin runs into her old crush.
Laugh for sure, but it also had real, and sweet moments.
I have listened and read this series, I loved reading them so much that I bought them here too. It had been awhile since I had read them, and listening to them was even better thanks to the narrator.
Love this series and loved this book and story. The speed of the audiobook was a real problem as it was way too fast and really degraded the performance - and enjoyment - in the story. I hope the powers that be do a much better job with the subsequent books.
I've said it before and I'll say it again- I love anything written by Laurenston/Aiken, and The Mane Event is no exception. Without giving spoilers- Laurenston has captured the essence of a lion male shifter and his single-minded pursuit of his mate. I really enjoyed Des and hope we see much more of her. It's hard to believe she is the full human in this story. :) In the second story, the female is Ronnie, a female wolf-shifter wild child. Emphasis on WILD! Enough said- no spoilers!
Charlotte Kane is a great narrator and elevates a story with great phrasing and voices, wonderful timing and the accents! Russian, Southern, the Bronx and New York Yankee- she can do it all. Great job!
I loved reading every book in this series, but the audio adds so much more. Charlotte Kane is the perfect narrator; good pacing for the story and she was great to listen to. Shelly Laurenston writes the funniest romances I've ever read. Not to mention her truly entertaining storylines. Hearing some of these scenes read aloud had me laughing out loud (which my hubby will tell you is RARE). This trio has kept me sane during a real challenge at work. The only negative is that now people think I've just gone crazy because of all the giggling... Audible, please please get the rest of them!
You get two stories in this one, Dez and Mace, and Ronnies and Shaw, thought my favorite is Dez and Mace, I love the byplay between the characters, and the reader brought that very well into the audio world, the longer stories are even better, with more dept and yes you'll see these characters all throught the series, so they have roles to play in the futur of this alluring world. Have fun. More please
Shelly Laurenston is a great story weaver with a wonderful sense of humor. I laughed out loud at several lines in this book.
Dez is probably my favorite character because she is tough, fair and also funny.
I read all Shelly Laurenston's books and highly recommend them to anyone who like light fantasy with some sex and great humor. She also has kick-ass heroines.
For story and narration combined this book is definitely on my "favorites" list! This narrator adds a lot to the book and makes it much more enjoyable than if I just read the story. She does a great job with all the different characters.
All of the characters were great, even the secondary ones, and I'm glad to be able to read other books in the series to get their stories.
You can easily distinguish the difference between characters from her performance.
Not sure but I'd definitely watch it!!
I have read all of Shelly's books. I loved this book, but I have to agree with the several other reviews that this was absolutely horrible. And I'm very disappointed, since Ms. Laurenston is one of my favorite writers. I would not buy another book narrated by Charlotte Kane. The narrator to me just didn't get the characters. I listen to a lot of audio books and would have to say this is the worst I have ever listened to, the part I did listen to. I just couldn't finish this one.
To me when she tried to use a southern drawl, she was way off the mark. Her NY accent wasn't much better and I didn't "feel" the connection between the characters.
The audio book was very disappointing.
I hope that Ms. Kane is not the narrator for Shelly's other books. I will not purchase the audio book if she is.
