Publisher's Summary

In the war between heaven and hell, a special race of humans with supernatural abilities will represent the balance between darkness and light. They are known as The Guardians.

Jack Bennett comes from a long line of Guardians, a fact that has been drummed into him since he was a kid. When he and a select group of elite Guardians are called upon by the Archangel Michael to complete a special assignment, Jack gladly accepts. Seven years later a failing mission and personal losses have left him jaded, bitter, and without room for love or relationships in his life.

The past that Addison Monroe is so desperately trying to escape is one she can't outrun. The darkness inside that causes her to act unpredictably has gone unexplained until now. A woman claiming to be an angel appears with a revelation that will shake Addison to her core: her dark nature is explained as Addison discovers that she is one of the Nephilim - a child born of a human mother and demon father.

Despite the dark nature she was born with, Addison has been chosen by heaven for a special purpose. Ten scrolls spelled to open up portals between hell and Earth; 10 demons who are using them to come and go from Earth at will, a violation of the terms set by heaven in the battle for souls; and one demon, known as the Great Duke of Hell, who will stop at nothing to defeat her. Fighting alongside two Guardians, Addison must uncover the legendary Seal of Solomon - a ring that is said to possess the power to destroy demons - and wield it against the enemies of heaven.

As his task to protect her develops into something more, Jack will find separating his job from his personal life nearly impossible. Ignoring the dangers of becoming too attached, Jack will find that a woman whose very nature should repulse him might just be his saving grace.

    "This sucked me right in!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely....this was a fabulous quick listen!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked when Addison finally gave in to her calling!

Which character – as performed by Henry McNulty – was your favorite?

I liked them all, But I am going to say Micah...he is great with that Cajun accent!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The ending...it was heart breaking!

    Any additional comments?

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchanged for an honest review **

I honestly loved this.....it sucked me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put this down! I listened to it all at once and can not wait for the next one!

This is about the war between good and evil to start with...Mainly about a girl named Addison who is stripping her way through college and has always been a little bit different....she has a very dark inner monologue and has never known why....Then we have Jack and Micah who are guardians who protect the children of angels called nephlum...Well Addison is one of these children...and she does not accept this easily....there is a bit of fighting, and a nice love story to go along with everything else and it ends on a little cliffhanger.....Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! 2 thumbs up!!!!

    Thank you Audiobookblast(dot)com

    Story
"A great take on demon/angel wars"
Would you listen to The Guardians: The Guardians, Book 1 again? Why?

Yes, I really enjoyed the narrator and his characterization. There are quite a few characters each with their own backstory that the author integrates seamlessly. I would listen again to pick up any nuances that I may have missed.

What other book might you compare The Guardians: The Guardians, Book 1 to and why?

The Vesik series is similar as well as the Quincy Harker series. Both deal with demon/angel struggles or possible apocalyptic situations.

What does Henry McNulty bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He gives life to the male characters and is quite good with regional accents. He creates great distinction between the characters that adds to the story. His voice is very emotive helps with the feeling of each scene.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The sacrifices made by each of the main characters and the depth of emotions each displayed in the big 10 battle.

    Any additional comments?

    "Great story and narration."
What made the experience of listening to The Guardians: The Guardians, Book 1 the most enjoyable?

Since I previously read this story before it became an audio book, I find that Henry McNully really brought out the story. His character depictions added depth. He raised the suspense level! Henry has a very sexy, sultry voice.

What did you like best about this story?

I love books about demons and angels. Adding the guardians made it original.

Have you listened to any of Henry McNulty’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    n/a

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Story
"If shrimp grits are good enough for angels..."

Addison is a hard working young lady with a difficult past. Her future may be even more difficult. Jack and Micha are team, Guardians, and they have been tasked with finding Addision, convincing her of the truth of her origins, and convincing her to help them. There is a battle between good and evil, Heaven and Hell, Guardians and Demons. Addison and Jack are in for more than they expect.

I enjoyed this book far more than I expected. It is the perfect mix of urban fantasy and romance, being more the first rather than the latter. The characters are all a little flawed in some way, making them very human. Even more so, they each are aware of their own little hangups, each trying in their way to work them out. No one needs to be coddled.

Bad things happen to folks in this book. We’re dealing with demons and other agents of the Devil, so it makes sense that not everything will be roses and sugar cubes bathed in golden rays of sunshine. Each has lost something precious to them and each has to address the choice: walk the path of good and true or the path of evil. This book was more complicated than I expected in this aspect and I really appreciated that. Things are not black and white.

Addison was my favorite character. She didn’t have the best upbringing and learned at a young age to be self-reliant. But as the years have gone by, she seems to have less control over herself when she gets angry, and sometimes detrimental things happen to those around her when she gets angry. She had to face quite a bit in this book, including the possibility that she is worthy.

Besides the agents of evil and demon beasties, the quest to save humanity and face inner demons, there is the romance and sex. Both are hot. The romance doesn’t take up too much of the book, but rather gets wrapped into the plot. The one sex scene is gorgeous and lush. Definitely worthy!

Micha stole the show quite a few times. He’s a chef as well as being a Guardian. His cooking is featured more than once and it is not just his human friends who enjoy it. Periodically angels pop on by for a chat and tasty shrimp in sauce over grits.

This is a lovely addition to the urban fantasy and paranormal romance genres out there. It does a great job of balancing the action and the romance. Also, while the characters each have their own ideas about their chosen deities, the author never gets preachy.

The ending of this book isn’t all sweetness and light. Indeed, we are left with something of a cliffhanger, so you might want to have Book 2 ready to go. Still, I liked the ending because this quest to save humanity is not meant to be easy.

I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost from the author via Audiobook Blast Facebook in exchange for an honest review (thanks!).

Narration: Henry McNulty had the perfect deep rich voice for Jack, who tells the bulk of the story. McNulty could melt ice cubes in outdoors in winter with that voice. Additionally, he had believable female voices, Hispanic accents, and evil demon noises.

"LOVED the story...Narration a bit monotone"

Story of Angels vs demons is awesome! Reminds me of 'Piercing the Darkness' book (if you haven't read it you SHOULD!) Could have done without the sex scene. I bought the 2nd book on hard copy (lol on my nook) but a little disappointed that the 2nd book was not already in audio. I listen a lot when I am working at home. The narrator has a nice voice. I was able to easily discern the different characters via the change in his voice. Unfortunately, the narration of the story itself (and even the sex scene...I fast forwarded through once it got really into it) was much too monotoned. Not enough 'natural' inflection during the story telling. I found myself having to concentrate or I would drift in my thoughts and have to go back and listen again.
All in all, I really enjoyed the story. I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd part.

    "So Much Action"

I loved this story. Listening to Harry's voice was wonderful and almost a bit too relaxing. Thankfully there was so much action I was riveted to the story. Elise knows how to write a great story and she really pulled out all the stops on this one. The whole story-line was just amazing and then her characters were out of this world. What can I say about Jack... aside form can I add his amazingness to my man? And Addison... she's so strong and so fragile it just makes all of the story so perfect. All I can really say is thank you so much Elise for writing such a great book and keep 'em coming lol.

    "One Down Ten to Go?"
    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this story. It has all of the elements necessary for a great read..

The characters in this story are diverse. Some are obviously good through and through while others have good and bad traits and must struggle. The true villains, the demons, are obviously the bad guys. We get bits and pieces of the major characters throughout the book. As we learn more about them, we are better able to understand their motivation. I am looking forward to getting to know them even better through the rest of the series.

This was a difficult book to rate at first. I really enjoyed the story, but something felt off. When I took the time too figure out that it was the rules I didn't like, it made sense. The rules for any religion often do not make sense to us mortals, and this story was no different. Although the rules made me angry and frustrated at times, they make perfect sense in the story. Once I realized this, I was able to go with my first instinct in rating the book.

Speaking of the rules, I have a feeling we are just starting to understand them. The book covered a lot of rules, but new ones were revealed off and on throughout the book. The scenarios we are shown at the end of the book leave me wondering what else we are going to be learning.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger at the end of the book, however, the book tells a complete story. This is a good ending for a series using the same characters. A major storyline is completed and we are left knowing that 9 or 10 additional stories need to be told. We are also left wondering what the future holds for a major character. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I through Henry did a great job narrating this book. I had no trouble telling the characters apart and the narration did not interfere with the story. Additionally, I found his voice easy to listen to and I believe it helped me 'read' the story in one sitting.

Again, a great book, worth a credit. A bargain on sale.

Thanks for the opportunity to read The Guardians Elise!

    PJ

What a fantastic book!!!! I just finished listening to it and I'm freaking out to get the next one! I listened to this in a single day because I just couldn't stop. The writing is flawless and moves swiftly from one scene to the next while still managing to give enough insight into the characters that you feel you know them. And the narrator? Don't even get me started on the narrator! He is absolutely perfect! He has just the right amount of that 'something' that makes him perfect for this story! YOU NEED THIS BOOK! note: I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review but Honey let me tell you I'd have happily paid for it! It's THAT good!

    "Angel vs Demon"
Where does The Guardians: The Guardians, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say the Guardians is better than most I have listened to. I love paranormal books, angels and demons are not my favorite but I still enjoyed this book. I have enjoyed many books concerning the Arch Angel Michael, knowing that this story would be about good vs evil. It was a little confusing at the beginning but finally gathered speed. Enjoyed the final 2 hours of the book the best but ended in a bit of a cliffhanger, which I deducted a star for in my review. Sorry, it is one of my pet peeves.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack was my favorite character. As a rule I tend to love the hero the best and the narrator did a great job with his voice, who helped me to picture him so easily in my mind. The hero character that is portrayed as a man's man, loyal, and fearless is usually my cup of tea and Jack was all that and more.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I would think that the overwhelming scene where Addison is introduced to Jack's "family". Everyone was so friendly and many were paired off, obviously in love and all excepted her even knowing who she was.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the part where Jack was kinda of shy and uncomfortable right before they made love.

    "A great book"
Would you listen to The Guardians: The Guardians, Book 1 again? Why?

Yes. It's packed full of story and characters. It's not confusing at all but it does means that I will visit it again. Probably before I do book 2

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Addison, but in terms of favourite I would say Jack. Really good characterisation and feel to the two of them.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I liked the way the author begins the book and spins this new world. The story is great throughout but it grabbed me early on!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No spoilers. I do however like how the author develops Jacks relationship with Addison.
