Publisher's summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a novel about a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed and danger that brings them together - and could tear them apart...

When professional house-sitter Lila Emerson witnesses a murder/suicide from her current apartment-sitting job, life as she knows it takes a dramatic turn. Suddenly, the woman with no permanent ties finds herself almost wishing for one...

Artist Ashton Archer knows his brother isn’t capable of violence - against himself or others. He recruits Lila, the only eyewitness, to help him uncover what happened. Chalking up their intense attraction to the heat of the moment, Lila agrees to help Ash try to find out who murdered his brother and why. From the penthouses of Manhattan to grand Italian villas, their investigation draws them into a rarefied circle where priceless antiques are bought, sold, gambled away and stolen; where what you possess is who you are; and where what you desire becomes a deadly obsession...

Critic reviews

“Roberts is performing at the top of her literary game…An addictive blend of sleek suspense and sophisticated romance that would make Hitchcock proud.”—Booklist (starred review)

“A pair of strong, commitment-averse protagonists, vividly drawn villains—a classy, stunningly beautiful, sociopathic assassin and a soulless recluse, in particular—an abundance of Fabergé egg history and a plot that keeps readers on edge add up to another classic for Roberts.”—Library Journal

“Sizzling suspense…Will keep readers riveted.”—Publishers Weekly

Best narrator ever!

I normally don’t enjoy audiobooks because it’s hard to listen to a narrator drag on. This narrator not only changed her voice but expressed emotion in all the right ways. I will look for more books narrated by her. And as always Norbert did not disappoint

Excellent!

I had no idea what the title really meant until I listened to this book! WOW, tossing and turning - every corner had hidden agendas. Loved the book! Loved the independency of Lila and "Ash" ….. what a dreamy guy!! lol Great ending, although I could of listened to more! Awesome narration Julia, thank you!

Great story

Fun entertainment on these long days at home. Descriptions of great places. Quite typical of their genre but fun.

Up and down

Lila was the most interesting character in the book. Perhaps it was the voice, but Ashton came across as patronizing and supercilious. The story was lost in repetitive descriptions. I compare this book to The Witness and it doesn’t compare well.

Great story but toooooo long!

The story is excellent with many twists but drags on for hours! Could be 4 hours less and a perfect read!

first time reader of Nora Roberts

I have not read romance novels for a long time especially not in audible form. But I thoroughly enjoyed the reading performance and the crisp right on cue retorts and conversations. Combined with a menacing killer and neurotic collector, this makes for a very engaging listen with my morning jogs. Will be looking out for more Nora Robert books.

I liked it

I'm not a huge fan or romances but this had a really good plot. Probably the only problem I had over all was that all of the male voices sounded so similar. between Ashton, Luke, the officer, and any other male character I couldn't really tell who was speaking if more than one was in the room, until specified.

only Ivan was different because of the Russian accent. the performance was good, over all though and kept me enthralled and entertained.

Fall in Love with this Book!

I fell in love with the main character! This was my first Nora Roberts book, but it won't be the last.
Great characterization, great narrator, fast-moving plot, a bit of accurate historical facts, and beautiful love scenes. Plus a good mystery.
Roberts's command of the language is wonderful! The reader can see every detail of the scene without it becoming tedious. Her dialogue is perfection.
And. if you love dogs and cats, you will fall in love, too.
