A car accident changes everything for Dr. Toni Parthen. Her computer-hacked hospital blood test confirms she's the carrier of a gene that's the key to salvation for a unique race of human beings. Abducted from her hospital room to a secret underground community, Toni is asked to do the unthinkable: procreate with a man from a race called Varcolac - a species that must consume the blood of humans to survive.
Then bizarre turns dangerous, because a new, mysterious enemy also wants her special DNA, and Toni finds herself in the middle of an all-out war to possess her. It's the job of Jacken Brun, leader of the Warrior Class, to keep the captured women safe from a demonic race of humans who rule a neighboring part of their underground world. His challenges multiply when Toni inflames the women into mutiny, and then there's his biggest problem...his growing desire for the infuriating woman herself. Afflicted with a dark genetic makeup, Jacken can never be with a woman - until Toni uses her scientific ingenuity to find a way for her and Jacken to be together. But then the new enemy faction unearths Toni and drags her to their hidden lair, where they'll inflict an unspeakable cruelty on her to gain access to her valuable genes. It will take every warrior skill Jacken owns to save the woman he loves, but only if he can find her in time....

I have not read the print version but I would assume it is as good as the audiobook
JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood or Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter novels. They have a similar format. A community of "fanged people". Women, sometimes men in peril from their enemies and most importantly love.
He brings the Characters to life, his voice is pure sex! (Wasn't so fond of Kimberly's accent but then I know people who talk like that in real life, annoying but natural.)
As with many good books it made me both laugh and cry. Particularly the scene with Kimberly (I think) talking to her mate about suffering abuse.
I love this book and am now purchasing the series to read them all, Tracy has a unique voice in what could be argued as an overpopulated genre. Her characters are natural and her plot believable and not just the same old same old. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I read this series first and since its been a while waiting for the fourth book, was offered a free audible copy to listen and review. The story is still amazing! I truly love the characters and plot lines. As far as the narrator, it took a few mins to get used to him. At first I thought he sounded like a reporter from the 50's the way he reads...kind of quick and sometimes a little low. I had to adjust my volume up & down. But He does the accents well and the female parts pretty good too. Overall, he doesn't Eva good job. Definitely pick this up! You'll quickly fall in love with this series like I did!
Wow! This is the most unusual vampire book I’ve ever read. They actually live underground and are called the Varcolac, that’s also the name of the caves where they live, and certain vampires have certain abilities. It’s a very different kind of vamp book.
I did like Jacken and Toni. As usual in romance books they did argue, all the while fighting their attraction. AND, to top it off, Jacken was the virgin, and had pledged a promise of celibacy to the head honcho, Roth and the doctor, Jess, because of him being half vamp and half demon. AND he was unable to EVER have sex with anyone he wasn’t bonded to. Jacken and Toni’s first time at sex was pretty funny. There were also a few LOL moments throughout the book. Overall, this was an exciting book and a really great romance.
I did really like the secondary characters: Beth and Arc, Kimberly and Sedge, Hannah and Willen, Ellen and Pedrr, Thomal, and Alex, Toni’s brother. There were some strange names going on here. Then there were the awful demons the Om Rau, with the man in charge being over 7 feet tall. And the way he was described he had to be really gross. Actually, all the demons from Otarat sounded pretty disgusting.
There was some explicit sex in this book, as well as swearing and the F-bomb was dropped 90 times. I don’t mind either one but I know a lot of you do, so you HAVE been warned.
As to the narration: Jeffery Kafer was good but I do wish he’d practice his female voices. They are still a little masculine. Actually, he does have a really sexy voice so that helps to overlook the females being a little un-feminine.
I really enjoyed this. It surprised me. I had difficulty with the kidnapping part, and the women not standing up for themselves at first. That's always a difficult subject, especially in what's to be a romance novel, but I like how the author did address that and I found myself more and more interested in these characters. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I enjoyed the narrator. He does have a very deep voice, but I had no problems with his voices for men or women. The only time I didn't particularly care for it was during the "British accent" some characters had, but it didn't distract enough to be a big problem. I give this one 4 stars overall. A nice new take on vampires that you can sink your teeth into.
(Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this audiobook to review from the author.)
Have you ever found something that you didn't know was missing? That's what you get with Tracy Tappan books! I had already read Beyond the call of Duty but this book a must for mystery readers. If you like a mystery within a mystery, paranormal, romance, great plot & characters; this is the book for you.
Strong female characters, agendas within agendas, infighting, betrayal, and romance. Add to that warriors from a lost race, kidnappings, enemies from a second unknown warrior race and you have an absolute hit. This series is off to a great start. I can listen to it again & again. I'm off to get the next book in the series.
This book has it all. great story line. plot is unique and we'll thought out. no cliff hangers just a thought toward next book. this book is truly going to be the start of a great new series. the main heroine's strength of character is refreshing and all the secondary characters as well. no simpering females in this book. all take their stance on right and wrong. hero's are hot, hot , hot!!! great sex, laugh out loud bantering and scenes from a bunch of alpha bachlors. what else can I say, book is a must read for anyone who likes a good storyline with all their steamy men : ) Narrator did an awesome job on keeping story moving along and his deep voice was perfect for these alpha males. inflection and timing was pure perfection. A must read rather credit or straight up buy. you won't regret it. can't wait for second installment. this series has the potential to be as good as black dagger brotherhood by JR Ward, and even lora leigh breed series. hope the Arthur takes this series and runs with it!!!
This book was perfect for me, great story, great charters, great world, great everything. This book is even bit as good as BDB or better. my heart actually sank when it ended because I didn't want it to be over I cannot wait for the rest of them to be on audible
