Publisher's summary

Working at a Suicide Prevention Center in San Francisco, Lily Goodwill thinks she's heard it all - then she gets a call from a man about to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Something about the caller, maybe his yummy British accent or Lily's ability to understand his crushing ennui, makes her break all the rules and rush to meet him. After all, she is a vampire and if she can't talk him down she can glamour him. But things don't go according to plan.

Her caller glows with blue fire and turns out to be a vampire-hating Djinn. Suddenly, for the first time in centuries he's found something intriguing. Is Lily really a vampire with a conscience and an obsessive-compulsive disorder, involving Handi-wipes and Lysol, or is she just another bloodsucker?

Add in another vampire, with a history of female lovers stretching over three centuries, who swears he's reformed and declares his undying love for Lily. Stir in a mean pair of witches and a vicious warlock, who are staking vampires around the city and you have a recipe for riotous adventure of supernatural proportions.

Lily Goodwill is a quick thinking, smart-talking vampire who's still figuring out how she feels about dining al fresco in the City by the Bay.

I like the storyline

The narrator does a good job however, they didn’t have a good studio. When ever a clip starts you can hear a drone in the background as if there was a fan that was not adequately muffled. That detracted from the experience.

Snarky and Fun - ready for more!

Where does Sucking in San Francisco rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have to put this book as a close second to my favorite snarky and fun books written by Molly Harper. I am really looking forward to reading more from Jessica McBrayer. I think the narrator is perfect for the book, kudos to Valerie Gilbert.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sucking in San Francisco?

Aiden's sense of mischief, popping in her car, making Lily dodge all sorts of things. Making her supervisor think he's her "special friend" made me laugh out loud.

What about Valerie Gilbert’s performance did you like?

Valerie did a great job. I love when she whispers thoughts of Lily. A perfect performance!
I can't wait to hear more from her.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I turned it on when I got to work, and didn't stop until it was finished on my drive home.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy quirky charaters as much as I do, you won't be disappointed in this book.

It was ok

I finished this book but was dissapointed in it as well. I think the story was probebly good but I had such a hard time with the reader. I couldnt get the voice out of my head and it was in a bad way. I also didnt like how I couldnt always tell who was talking, as in which character was in control. Sorry. I will probebly not be listening to any more of this series.

Better In Print

Overall it really is a good book, good storyline but the narration really draws away from the book, the narration is just bad, you can barely hear her at points the monotone voice, I suggest you buy in print or Ebook I had to finish with the e-book because I just couldn't finish the audiobook

The storyline had potential but ...

This book was a disappointment for me. It got some good reviews so I took a chance. The author seems to have some talent but I found this tedious. A vampire who calls his reluctant lover Ma Petite, now why does that sound familiar? The thing that I just could not take was Lily's endless drivel about her two love interests. I get it, they are both gorgeous, they both kiss well and she can't make up her mind between them. This constant prattle takes up most of the book. I found the outlines of the characters interesting but they were never developed. When Lily does make up her mind, no real reason is given. No grit and no real humor. My advise, save your credit and wait for the next Faith Hunter or Molly Harper book.

Drivel

What disappointed you about Sucking in San Francisco?

The story was all about Lilly's inablility to choose between two men. I became so bored with the story I did not bother to listen to the whole book. The story had potential, there was imagination, interesting characters but the incessant romantic portions were tedious.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator uses a sing song voice in a number of places in the book which is dreadful. I liked the voice but the over acting was over the top.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Sucking in San Francisco?

If the majority of the "I can't decide who I like" drivel was removed the book would have only been about half as long and twice as interesting.

boring narration

I struggled to get even half way. They could bot have found a more boring, less animated narrator. Otherwise it might have been a good story.

This is the hardest book I ever listened to. I didn't make it past Chapter 2.

Could not finish

I could not finish this book. The narrator is awful. Everyone appears to be a valley girl. She whispers some words and yells others, in the same sentence. It scared the crap out of me multiple times because I’d have to turn it way up to hear and she’d shout unimportant words. I tried to power through because I loved the idea of the story. I found I couldn’t listen to Lily drone on to herself about how handsome both men were another second. Nothing happens but her incessant internal whining.
