Publisher's summary

In Victorian England, vice of every kind can be purchased, and Matthew, the Earl of Wallingford, makes certain he avails himself of every possible pleasure. Bored and jaded, he is as well-known for his coldness as for his licentious affairs with beautiful women.

While these numerous dalliances fulfill Matthew’s every physical need, they secretly leave him numb and emotionally void. Until one night, when he finds himself beaten, eyes bandaged and in the care of a nurse with the voice of an angel—and a gentle touch that soothes the darkness in him and makes him yearn for more.

Yet Jane Rankin is a lowly nurse, considered shy and plain by most. There is no place for her amongst the lords and ladies of the aristocracy—despite Matthew’s growing craving for the fire that burns behind her earnest facade. And then there is Matthew’s secret. A secret so humiliating and scandalous it could destroy everyone he loves. A sin, he fears, not even the love of a good woman can take away….

Good except the end.

Spoilers.

Good story and writing. BUT the ending is not what I consider a HEA. The heroine winds up a mistress—very disappointing.

Gets better as it goes

As I listened to the beginning of the book I thought it was going to be all about sex and lacking in depth and plot. I almost considered turning it off. Glad I didn't. This book does have a good story and definitely gets better as it goes.

Would have gotten 5 stars if not for the ending

This book was on the top of the list for laughs, tears, and lust. The plot was exceptional …….until I made it to the end. I purchase these books to escape from reality; I paid for a happy ending. In my opinion, the ending was not a happy. I was so disappointed, upset, and sad how the author could make the heroine end up that way was devastating. Did Jane not learn anything from her mother’s misfortune? At the end of the book, I found myself hoping she ended up like her mother. Very bad relationship decision! I would have given this book 5 Stars if not for the ending.

I love Charlotte Featherstone

This was a beautiful love story! I cried and I felt for the main couple. Narrator WAS Well Spoken . But, the ending is disappointing.

Dreadful Narrator, Mediocre Plot

Unfortunately it was difficult to tell if this book was disappointing because of the horrible reading or the plot development. I have never heard a narrator with such terrible phrasing. He takes huge breaths in the middle of sentences and places emphasis on words in a way that makes no sense.

The story itself is decent, although there is a great deal of time given to character development, and then not enough time given to how the characters' personalities change due to their circumstances. For instance, the hero in the book is the worst kind of rake. The author spends a good amount of time describing his playboy past, and yet he literally changes overnight because of the heroine. Unfortunately this isn't described as a "love at first sight" scenerio, but more of a "lust at first sight" situation. Therefore, the immediate change of personality the hero undergoes is a bit confusing. Also, the heroine has a very strong since of morality, which is also described at length, but ends up as the mistress of a married man with little explanation.

I definitely don't recommend this book for women who enjoy traditional romance novels, as it is written more like an erotic novel rather than a historical romance. Some people may find the choice of words rather vulgar compared to others typically used in the romance category. However, if you enjoy extremely detailed sex scenes regardless of the story line, it does get pretty steamy.

Could have been great...

I don't normally leave a review.. I'm not a writer and have nothing but respect and appreciation for those that are! However I am a book lover and as so I was really disappointed with the fact that the villains pretty much got away with everything they inflicted. I mean yes there was somewhat of a happy ending for Jane and Matty , but the villains were never made accountable .. I don't know maybe I have been reading too much, maybe it was the narrator, maybe it's me but I think the villains should have been handled better and Jane and especially Matty should have gotten everything they wished for! anyway that is how I felt . I hope this helps ☺

WTF did I just waist my time on?

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlotte Featherstone again?

Nope

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

He did both the women's and men's voices well, but he paused in the middle of sentences.

Any additional comments?

t started out okay. Grew tedious in the middle. Became almost unreadable at the end. The antagonists are over the top and cartoony, and are never defeated, (the H just sits back and let's them win). There is no HEA. The epilogue is supposed to be on the author's web-sight; I typed her name into google, but gave up after I didn't find it on the first page.

Horrible

This was awful in a way I’ve rarely experienced. It’s a one concept book set on repeat. No vivid characters, no real description of the aesthetic, no plot. People are slamming the narrator when he was the only saving grace. I really felt for him, endlessly talking about spectacles, wet vaginas, contracting wombs and the Matthew/Wollingford dichotomy - who was, FYI, 1 man with 2 identically horny deviant personas - not exactly Jekyll and Hyde.

That’s a yikes from me.

Horrible reading

It's really hard to get into the book when the narrator is not doing a good job. To be fair though, it looks like this was his first audiobook. He has a long way to go, but I think that he can end up as next Phil Gigante since he does have a really nice voice.
Things that bothered me:
- conversation needed to be more 'conversational' and not just plain reading
- no real distinction between female/male voices. Although the voice for an old duke was well done.
- randomly pausing in the middle of sentences which annoyed me to no end

As for the plot- surprisingly deep since this is actually an erotic novel and not romance. The ending had an interesting twist. If you're thinking of reading this, I'd suggest just buy a book and read it yourself.
