Publisher's summary

In order to save his friend's life, Wyr sentinel Rune Ainissesthai made a bargain with Vampyre Queen Carling - without knowing what she would ask from him in return. But when Rune attempts to make good on his debt, he finds a woman on the edge.

Recently, Carling's power has become erratic, forcing her followers to flee in fear. Despite the danger, Rune is drawn to the ailing Queen and decides to help her find a cure for the serpent's kiss - the vampyric disease that's killing her.

With their desire for each other escalating just as quickly as Carling's instability spirals out of control, the sentinel and the Queen will have to rely on each other if they have any hope of surviving the serpent's kiss.

Good but it dragged

This had all the ingredients for a wonderful story but sooo much time was spent word building and overly explaining EVERYTHING! Then it was so heavily introspective- thinking, feeling, etc - I had to stop and make sure I wasn’t reading YA fiction with all the angst. Anyhoo, not much action in the one but a strong hero and heroine so I kept reading. The ending was a little too simple after all the angst so I’m assuming the author got tired of the characters like I did and just decided to add a sex scene and wrap it up. I could have skipped this one in the series and been fine.

Rune meets his match

Rune owes a legendary vampiress/sorceress a favor and he arrives to an Other World island to pay his debt. Little did he know his future and little did Carling know her future with Rune. This is another fine romance full of adventure and challenge and smoldering looks and arguments and miscommunications and betrayals before all is sorted in the way of the Elder Races. Excellent narration by Sophie Eastlake keeps this a here and now drama and me eagerly and furiously listening trying to figure out how any of this twisted plot will work out.

The characters and plot stayed true, great book

So, I didn't listen to this book for the longest time since I'd read mixed reviews, but I think this book was very well written. The issues between Rune and Dragos are disappointing, but they stay true to character and story. I really, truly felt the depth of devotion and love between Carling and Rune, and it made this book delightful to read. The author also perfectly set up the next book as well, without it feeling like the next boring piece in a line of available characters. Listening to Oracle's Moon immediately after Serpent's Kiss.

Surprisingly fast becoming a favorite series!

I have seen these books in my suggestions in Audible but didn’t want to waste credits. With the new romance club I have listened to 3 so far and am in love! Not only with the author but the narrator. The characters are just that lol I am so glad I chose to give these a try, if you have not dove into the Elder races.... do so NOW! I promise you won’t be disappointed ❤️

Rune!

So far, I've listened to the first 5 of the Elder Race books and I honestly love them all, for different reasons. My main reason for loving this book was Rune. He is by far, my favorite of the male Weir.
What I love about each of the subsequent books has been that they each focus on different characters that you were only casually introduced to in the first book. Thea Harrison has so deeply developed all of her main characters so that each book does not at all feel like a repeat of the last, but more another perspective into the Elder races and how they all interact.
As with the prior 2 books, this one is definitely steamy in all the right ways but it does take longer than I would've liked for the two main characters to get it on ;). So, have patience. When they get there, it will be worth the wait.
All in all, a great modern fantasy book that delivers on action, sex, laughter, and love.
