Publisher's summary

Two hundred years after the Raintree clan defeated and abandoned them on a small Caribbean Island, the Ansara wizards are rising again to take on their bitterest foes. Despite their extraordinary powers and supernatural origin, the Raintree have largely blended into the modern world. They are bankers, cops, husbands, wives, and lovers in the society of humankind. But now, from Nevada to North Carolina, the rejoined battle will measure the endurance of their people. It will test their loyalties and relationships. And it will force them all into new lives they could barely have imagined before.

Fair at best

Linda Howard used to be one of the best romance authors in contemporary fiction. However, she had moved into the "chick lit" area and she doesn't do it very well. The premise of this book had potential yet the plot left something to be desired. The heroine was annoying and the hero just didn't ring true.

The reader did a good job with the material that she/he had but tey didn't have a lot of material to work with. I am not a big fan of books with 2 different readers - man and woman - so I am slightly biased as the this audiobook.

As a first book in the series (the other 2 book have different authors), it was a fair beginning but not a great beginning. If I didn't want to find out about Gideon or Mercy, I wouldn't have continued on. Hopefully, the sequel is better written than this.

I don't fault the audio version for inadequate writing but buy this book with a caveat emptor warning.

A 'no ending' story

I enjoyed the audio book as far as it went. It got finished before I did. Had to verify that it was not an imcomplete download because it didn't really end. Not going to get the others in the series as they might finish in the same way.

A partial book

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I agree with previous reviewer who said this story was half a book. It ends right in the middle of the story, seriously! I'm not saying don't read it just want you to know. In addition the female reader was incredibly annoying. She sounded like a nasal twanged bad tempered immature valley girl. When she read the man't comments her voice was much more tolerable. She really ruined the book for me. In future, if she is narrator, I will listen to sample to see if she is still doing that horrible valley girl imitation.

As to the story, it was ok. Big disappointment because I have read all of Linda's previous books and loved almost all. This one was so weak that I had towonder if she was sick, hated the story herself, what? Just very very bad.

I am now reading the 2nd book. We shall see.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Ripped off. It ended half way into the story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Hillary Huber and Stefan Rudnicki ’s performances?

Unlikely I can take Hillary. Stefan was ok but didn't much care for his voice though not irritating like Hillary.

Was Raintree worth the listening time?

Barely

This book has no place in the erotica section

It was so boring. I kept fast forwarding 30 second trying to find something exciting or erotic

Could have been so much more...

Though I am a Linda Howard fan, I felt there was a lot missing in the plot of this book. I just recently started listening to audio books and I cannot say that I enjoyed listening to this book either. The voice for the heroin made me cringe. It was like hearing nails on a chalkboard. I hope that the sequels are more enjoyable.

Nope

Couldn't finish. I made it to chapter 8 when he kissed her. I'm out. I'm all for alpha male types but not those that control someone against their will. that is too close to rape for me.
