Publisher's summary

This New York Times best-selling author holds a Romance Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award. With more than eight million copies of her books in print, Elizabeth Lowell has won a huge following of readers who yearn for romance as much as she does.

Left alone on her family's Civil War-ravaged farm, Willow Moran wants to find her gold-mining brother in the Colorado Rockies and start a new life. Dark, strong, unsmiling Caleb Black is going to be her guide. As threatening as he seems, this former army scout is Willow's best hope for a safe passage through the treacherous mountains past comancheros and Indian renegades. But torn between his need for a woman and his thirst for vengeance, Caleb has his own reasons for helping the innocent young Willow.

Characteristic of Elizabeth Lowell's books, Only His offers an exciting world of heightened passion and warm sensuality. Richard Ferrone's tantalizing narration lets listeners experience the thrill of a dangerous liaison from the safety of an armchair.

Steamy western historical romance

What a fantastic book, engaging story with strong alfa male hero and equality strong and feminine heroine.
Of course, it’s slightly formulaic and has its share of misunderstandings and hero behaves as a right misogynist in the beginning but even this didn’t spoil the story....

Highly recommend, definitely a keeper🌟

Was an Enjoyable book

This was an enjoyable book to read and listen to. The only thing that would have made it even better was to have a man read the male parts in the book and a female for the women's parts.

One of Elizabeth Lowell’s older novels

This is a historical western romance novel. No matter what genre Elizabeth Lowell chooses, she owns it. A very talented writer. Solidly enjoyable book. Good narrator.

Audiobooks should have ratings...

I purchased this audiobook because it seemed like something that would interest me, and it did.
But I would have loved it if it had not included the many many sex scenes in it. If this were a movie, it probably would be rated R at minimum.
The story itself is written beautifully, and has a great flow to it. So if you enjoy the hot and steamy love scenes, then you may want to get this. If you tend to enjoy cleaner romantic novels, then this is not for you.

It's all about the narrators!

Since this is a review of the story, let me first say that the story was very much in keeping with the others in the "Only" series...enjoyable none the less.

My criticism is for the narrator but not just this particular narrator. I've listened to countless audio books and I have to say that with very few exceptions I find female narrators to be far superior to their male counterparts. The really great ones have a wonderful range of voices for both the female and male characters.

Western Love.

A really great old-fashioned Western love story. Of course one does know at the beginning how it would be ended, however in between it’s a good story. Couldn’t stop listening to it.

Old School Historical

Maybe hard for me to be as objective as younger readers when it comes to this book. I’ve reread it so many times since it was published and I love Willow and Caleb. It’s definitely an old school Western style romance- Caleb is a lot to handle. If you’re a diehard feminist you might want to skip this one. Narration is excellent and Lowell’s writing is solid; Again our Hero is a hard ass, insensitive and “politically incorrect” by today’s standards - keep in mind it’s just Fiction!

kind of silly

Predictable story line, over the top characters, flowery language. Finished it but wished I hadn't.

Could not finish.

I listened for 9.5 Audible hours to this slow-burn romantic travel adventure, and with 3 hours to go, I have stopped, unable to go on. I can guess the rest of the story. The audio recording was made in 2008 with one older sounding male narrator reading both main characters’ points of view. It’s not working for me. Even modern narrators of my preference probably can’t save this style of story for me. Perhaps I’m too old for it. I am discovering I am an impatient reader and need the story to move along at a more clipped pace.

The story also involves a heroine pretending to be married in order to secure safe passage across the 1800s American plains with her virtue in tact. While the hero suspects she is fibbing about being married, he can’t be sure. It bothered me that the heroine’s marital state, whether real or not, was important and they both ignored that. It FELT like they were cheating even though they weren’t. Is that weird of me? Both characters kept secrets and the hero manipulated the heroine, so I was unsatisfied that lies provided the foundations for love, and accordingly, I couldn't buy into it. Other readers may not feel the same as me because they might love this slow pace and narrator. And, presumably the whole truth and real feelings are revealed eventually.

I recommend you listen to the Audible sample and/or read the Kindle one on Amazon to help you decide. You might love it. Unfortunately, I didn’t.
