She's a mortal cursed with dark power....
After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: a terrifying ability to channel electricity and to see a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude ... until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire.
He's the Prince of Night....
Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all - but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him: a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, passion ignites, threatening to consume them. It will take everything they have to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

The book was great - right up until the end. I know this is supposed to be book 1 of a new series, but really.... I have NEVER read a book that ended so awkwardly. My recommendation would be, wait until book 2 comes out, and then read them back to back. Otherwise, you are going to be mad at having to wait to discover how story lines wrap up.
Leila was a great character.
The only downside to the performance is that the main character - Vlad's - voice is less than sexy to say the least. All the other character voices are great.
I had started with the Night Huntress series, but jumped to this one out of curiosity and I'm glad I did. Very good pace and good clif hanger at the end. I can't wait for the next one!! Some good supporting people and I would love to see more on them as well. I wasn't real crazy about the narrator, I think Sophie Eastlake would have made the performace better. But over all, I enjoyed this book so much that I've listened to it twice now in a week and half. It's a rare book that will make me do that. While I'm waiting for the next one in this series, I will go back to Night Huntress to find out more about Cat and Bones.
Yes, Yes and Heck Yeah!!!! This book reminds me of Linda Howard's Blood Born, but
Linda's publishers wouldn't let her release the sequel Warrior Rising, Ok, so....??? I can only hope Ms. Frost does her sequel to this book. It is soooo darn good..Whew. This author is fantastic!!!!!
Leila and Vlad... Her abililties
She is a terrific Narrator. I usually like Xe Sands, she's my fav, but look out!! Tavia is on her trail to take over as my new favorite. Her dialogue is great. I kinda want her to work on her depiction on russian accents, but overall? Great job!!1
Yes I did, I did both ...
I highly recommend this book. If you are into Vampire fantasy and you like Jacquelyn Frank Vampire series of books? Try Ms. J Frost on for size. You won't regret it!!!
Solid story building on a captivating world and characters we know so well (but always still sooo much more to explore!)
Too explicit to share :)
Yes! I can never stop listening once I get started on any of her books and the narrator is sooooo good!
I am glad I got to see closer into the character Vlad. I loved him in the Cat and Bones books. Though I didn???t think this book was as strong as some of Frost???s other work, it was a great read and I will diffidently be buying the next in the series.
First let me say that I LOVE Audible.com. I tell every one I know about it!!
I have never read any of this author's other stories and took a chance on this one. I am glad I did! I like it better so far than some of the Sookie Stackhouse books..I enjoyed the storyline and it moved at a good pace. I really enjoyed the narration by Tavia Gilbert. I will anxiously await the second installment in this series!
I absolutely love audible! I read constantly and there is nothing better than finding a new series to follow. I'm a syfy/fant kinda gal.
YES. I love Tavia Gilbert! She is one of my favorite narrators and I LOVE Vlad's accent during her performances.
I am a HUGE Cat & Bones fan! I will say this book wasn't AS great as I thought it would be, but I have extremely high hopes for the Vlad series. Vlad is one of my favorite characters and I can't wait to see what is in store for him next!
Her accents are my favorite part of her performances! Bone/Spade and Vlad have unique accents that sets Ms. Gilbert apart from other 'ordinary' narrators.
This book was both funny and touching in certain parts.
A great read without a true final ending, but good none the less!
I listen to a bit of everything. Mostly Fantasy and paranormal romance with my wife. Along with mysteries/thrillers, even some sci-fi.
Steamy fun, with a twist of snarky.
Once Burned introduces a new heroine for the pyro Vlad Dracul to engage with. This book is filled with lots of snark from Vlad witty insight and banter from Leila, Vlad and our inspired heros from the other Night Huntress novels. We listenend to this book with a big grin on our faces and it was great summer reading. The plot is fast-paced the characters are good, though there's not a whole lot for some of the characters to do ex. Marty and the Family), but it's a lot of fun espically if you're a fan of the Night Huntress series. Vlad is a great change of pace from Kat, Bones etc. Leila is a good heroine and her abilities make her one tough lady. I think this could prove to be a great series, but too much Vlad could get old after a while. Ms. Tavia Gilbert breathes life into the characters like no one else could.
This book is really really good, sexy and funny and she is the perfect girl for vlad, I love vlad, BUT why did it end like this?? AND WHY is it the next one so far away??? SUCH A TEASER BOOK!!! I wish she would put out a really huge book or atleast 2 or 3 books out at the same time... LOVE LOVE J. FROST books, especially the narrator. She is one of my favs.
BEST NARRATOR EVER!!!!
"really good story"
I would as the performance is excellent and enhances the story and strengthens the characters.
As I have read the Huntress series and Vlad was a strong support character in those books - this book develops his story line. The book is free standing and is not affected if you have not read the Huntress series. LOVED this book will read it again without a doubt.
"Another great book form Jeanine Frost"
I have been a fan of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress World books for years and Once Burned did not disappoint.
It is only recently that I have begun to listen to audiobooks, as I do not have the time to read books as much as I used to or want to.
Not only does the story draw you into the world Jeaniene has created, but Tavia Gilbert does an excellent job as a narrator with her natural flow, pleasant voice, her ability to express specific feelings in a single sentence as well as using different voices and accents for each character. There are a few accents/voices I think could use a little improving, but overall I love Tavia Gilbert's work.
Definitely, I have read the book in one sitting and have listened to the audiobook quite a few times so far.
I could not stop listening to this book ,it kept me hooked all the way through.great listening
I absolutely Love this story my fourth time of listening it's still exciting ...now for book 2😍
"Really good read"
I'm really enjoying fantasy novels at the moment (guild hunter, daughter of smoke and bone, angel fall etc) really enjoyed the narrators style the story was pretty good. On to book 2 of the series next :)
"An enjoyable read... Or listen!"
I enjoyed the take on the age old Vlad the Impaler legend.
I think it's important to note that the male main character in this book has a Romanian accent. Tavia Gilbert managed to do an okay job with this, better than most attempts at accents in audiobooks, and as the story goes on you get used to it a bit more. However, if I'm honest, I could only *just* stand it. If the story hadn't been as compelling, I would not have been able to listen to it. There are a couple of other accents attempted which were terrible. In particular, what was supposed to be an English accent was unbearable. As an English woman, it was cringeworthy to hear our accent butchered. Thankfully that particular character is only in it for a short scene. Although be aware that the spin-off of this series features the same character as it's main protagonist.
I would like the sample to have included a section with Tavia speaking with the "Romanian" accent. It is an important factor to many listeners.
The actual story is great. It's a nice, laid back, easy listen and I throughly enjoyed the storyline. I perfect balance of action and romance, with some great passion.
"An enjoyable listen"
Not really, it was good enough but I just couldn't get past the narrators awful British accents.
It would have been far better if she had never tried to do an English or Irish accent, the two simply made me cringe, not good at all.
All in all though the narrator was good at the Romanian accent and she had a smooth tone, some narrators, especially American ones do this thing where they pause better words which I find jarring, she didn't. And she put the right inflections on words.
Another very good book by Jeaniene Frost, transporting you to the world of Cat and Bones, whilst not thinking about them as Vlad and Leila take over with their story. A totally different and believable thread.
Leila for her determination and drive, and making the most of her situation (accident)
I would say they were all good with no two sounding the same
All twists and turns were captivating and different.
Excellent, JF is definately my choice for author of the year, roll out the next book.
"I think I'm in love..."
Vlad was one of my favourite minor characters from the Night Huntress series. After listening to the two previous spin-off books, I was slightly dubious about this one but I am so pleased that I went ahead and bought it. Vlad is strong, sexy, masterful and, admittedly, infuriating at times, thus making him a perfect lead character. Leila is independent, brave and strong willed and clashes brilliantly with Vlad on a variety of topics. She might think he is sex on legs but that doesn't mean she's going to let him have everything his way. A great story that leaves you hanging on for the next one...
This was a wonderful book and a brilliant addition to Jeaniene Frosts collection. I was thrilled all the way through.
