Editorial reviews

In Book 8 of Laurann Dohner's steamy, popular New Species series, Dr. Allison Baker passionately tends to 880, a wounded New Species: part animal, part man, and in a coma. Knowing that her tempting female scent will lure him into consciousness, she begins sleeping beside him - and after 880 wakes, choosing the powerful and dark name Obsidian, he decides to claim Alli as his. A sensual, versatile performance from Vanessa Chambers helps bring Dohner's characters to life in this sexy example of erotic sci-fi.

Publisher's summary

Book 8 in the New Species series.

Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with saving the comatose New Species male. She has tried everything and there’s only one option left. Alli will break every rule and put her life in danger by tempting 880 to wake, using only her feminine scent and touch. She just has to kidnap him and crawl into bed with him to make it work.

880 wakes in a different world with a small female who’s been sleeping beside him, caressing him, and wrapping her sweet body around his, teasing his senses. He lies silent and still, listening and evaluating each arousing touch, fighting his body’s reaction. Hatred flares when he discovers she’s human, but Mercile stole everything from him so he decides it’s fair to take her in return.

But things quickly change and he wants her at his side and in his bed. 880 has chosen a new name – Obsidian - the personification of dark and dangerous. He’ll fight them all to keep Alli. No one will stand in his way.

Good story

I enjoyed this audiobook in the New Species series. I have to admit I didn't get into it as much as others from the series. The story is about a New Species who was severely abused by Mercile and they killed his mate in front of him to punish him. The new NSO doctor won't give up on him, even though he's non-responsive. They go through a lot and end up finding out that you can love again, even after terrible things happen.

Another great addition to the series

Any additional comments?

The narrator is the reason that I have purchased every audio book in this series. The story is good but the narrator Vanessa Chambers makes this book a thousand times better!!! A narrator can totally kill a book and this is an example where the narrator just makes this book AMAZING!!! Great Job

Great action! Sad story but, same story Premise.

Emotional and appropriate inter action STARVED species INMATE in a coma. A female (anglo/ long hair) Doctor figured that he could "scent" another female to inspire him to wake. This story will keep you listening but SEX does NOT fix everything. Even GREAT sex. This story was uncomfortable for ME at times but, I will still listened. I will continue to read/buy the rest of the series stories about New Species following in love/lust with human female (pale/ anglo) with long hair & the great sex the new species males provide along with environmental conflicts that they have to survive. The reader does a great job, again.

Sadness

This is my least favorite of the species series. While I can hardly wait for other books are put on audible I am disappointed in this book. It seem to be a sex scene after another lacking in an actual story

Enjoyed

What did you love best about Obsidian?

The characters

Would you be willing to try another book from Laurann Dohner? Why or why not?

Of course

Which character – as performed by Vanessa Chambers – was your favorite?

not sure

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I guess

Any additional comments?

I wasn't a big fan of the reprimand of Ally - in past books things have been overlooked because it was the leaders feeling them - but because Obsidian wasn't a leader he didn't have the same rights to behaviour - that was annoying.

Instead of “Sleeping Beauty”, it’s a “Sleeping Hunk”

A very unique storyline, filled with love and tears. Such a hot sex life, OMG. Great characters, writing & narration. Don’t miss a terrific book.

Back Together

This was not the easiest book to listen to. Obsidian drove me crazy he was such an alpha. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but he really was feral to the max. I didn’t see the Doc’s fascination at all! Lol. I do enjoy this series though.

OBSIDIAN-DARKNESS THAT HOLDS BEAUTY

Of all the New Species books, this would have to be my least favorite, so far. That is not to say that I didn’t enjoy listening to the book because I did. I just thought the heroine was annoying. Why is it that people that have a lot of book sense don’t really have any common sense. Let me explain.

Dr. Allison Baker (Allie) risks everything (her life, her career, her job) to save a new species that is currently in a coma. She kidnaps Obsidian aka 880 and takes him to a rental house to try to coerce him to awaken using her scent. Obsidian has been in a coma since injuring himself trying to save his mate, when she was killed in front of him by some technicians. He has never known freedom and doesn’t understand that he and his people are free, do you see Allie’s first mistake. Allie then agrees to stay in his room with him, even though he has been somewhat hostile towards her to help him "adjust to freedom", do you see her second mistake. In the end they both get their HEA, but some of Allie decisions just left me confused about this character.

On the other hand, I love Obsidian. He is the perfect prototype of a new species man. He is gorgeous, fierce, and protective and loves hard. He knows he shouldn’t want Allie because she is human but doggoneit, he is determined to have her even if it means learning to accept that not all humans are evil.

This book also lacked some of the action that was previous of the other books. But the storyline is still interesting and it’s also interesting when you learn about Obsidian full background. I think his background was bittersweet, even if he did have a mate. As always, the romance scenes are steamy, hot and drool worthy. It helps keep my work time interesting.

Overall, I think you should read the book, if not for anything just to learn about Obsidian and his life and to catch up on the rest of the New Species characters.
