Love in vein: listen to another Dark-Hunter novel.

"If you love Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel, then boy, is this the book for you...original and complex...the characters are unforgettable and the action thrilling." (Romantic Times)
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
Technically this book is the beginning of dark hunter stories, but not the first in the series. Sherrilyn Kenyon put lots of story arcing in all of her books but this one tells about dark hunters and daemons.
I thought this would be a fantasy book with vampires, adventure etc.; such a book does require some character development. However the female protagonist is close to a bimbo, the character development is very flat and there is a good bit of gratuitous sex.
I'm listening to this book because the Dark Hunter books have gotten high ratings. I read a lot of these types of books and some are very good (such as Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress). However, I'm finding Night Pleasures a bit silly and the frequent sex scenes are too much. The characters just want to jump each other all the time right from page one, and the dialogue is so corny ("Ooooh Hunter!) that I find myself smirking a lot. I'm almost through the book, although can I barely stand to hear more of those southern belle accents, or worse, the hero's accent. He's supposed to be Greek, but the reader makes him sound like he's from Transylvania. Actually, most of the accents are pretty bad, even Acheron's uppercrust English one, and what sounds like maybe an attempt at a Scottish brogue from Talon. The book is at its best when the history of the characters is told in detail and that's why I've continued on.
I'm hoping the rest of the books are better.
Am I the only guy that reads these books? All reviews are from women so I'll give my opinion. Narrator is good, lots of action, and lots of VERY detailed, passionate love scenes. Honestly I think the author is definatly a nymph, and I love it! Cant help but wonder what my neighbors think when im cleaning house and blaring these books on my surround sound. Apart from the frequent love scenes theres alot of mythology to turn guys on to this series so try it, you wont be dissapointed
If you read for pure get-to-it, I'll-believe-anything romance, then go for this book, but if you read with any decent degree of expectations, please skip it. I bought it based on the reviews of lots of hot sex and a great story...sounds great! But you've got to give me some character development. It's pure melodrama.
The vampire's like hundreds of years old and has met a gazillion women, yet THIS ONE is the THE ONE....but why? Because she's the first sassy woman he's ever come across? She does have a special power, but the author doesn't do a good job of tying that to why she'd so special to the hero.
Apparently the reader is just supposed to buy the romance/obsession/SHE'S THE ONE thing because the author just tells you he feels this way in the hero's inner monologue, I guess. I certainly wasn't shown much about her that was so special--more so than ALL those other women.
Please, give womankind some credit! There are lots of special women in this world--ALL women! The author is going to have to do more than that to convince me of why HER. What makes her so special? Why her?? I still don't know. Other than apparently she's the first sassy/sarcastic woman he's ever met, and I don't believe that.
The author doesn't do enough to build up sexual tension or romance. Then throw in cringe-worthy moments like this: the hero drops the maiden off and tells her he'll pick her up in the morning, after just meeting her hours before... and yet "letting her walk away was the hardest thing he'd ever done in his life..." REALLY? You're like hundreds of years old, you've known her for only a few hours, and geez, you're gonna see her in the morning!!! Is it REALLY the HARDEST thing you've EVER had to do to say goodnight and pick her up in the morning?? sooo melodramatic. It's stuff like that that really killed my enjoyment of this book.
Excellent "listen." The narrator is quite good - adds a lot to the book. I'm disappointed that audible doesn't have all of the books available to buy - guess I'll have to go to another vendor when my list is not available on audible.
I was skeptical at first. Listened to the first 2 hours and was ready to put it up but I kept with it and glad I did. Once you get past the first couple of hours of them just wanting to have each other, the story starts to unfold and reels you in.
I listened to the 2nd book, same thing, get past the first 2 hours. I only wish Audible carried the entire series of books, not just about 8 out of 13.
I do LOVE the narrator. She does an excellent job with the other character voices.
Man I had such high hopes for this series. In this first book it seemed as though there was a good storyline. Sadly the second book has the same storyline and I realized somewhere between the two that the author's lack of imagination was more than I could stand. BOOOOO HIIISSSSSS!
I couldn't get past 20min into the audiobook. The writing style tends to repeat the same information TOO often and the main character lost my interest.
Best guess on who would enjoy this book: someone who is interested in an unrealistic fantasy relationship with Mr. Perfect and Plain Jane.
