Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The Molly Harper/Amanda Ronconi pairing has become the stuff of Audible legend, and it all started with this book. If you ever feel like the vampire romance genre has all gotten a little bit too serious and swooning for its own good, this is the perfect antidote. The kick-off to the delightfully quirky and laugh-out-loud funny Nice Girls;... series, as well as an equally popular spin-off series, this book has been a non-stop hit with our listeners. — Emily

Publisher's Summary

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.

Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and endure daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She's forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. Her relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn't enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What's a nice undead girl to do?

Love in vein: bite into more of Jane Jameson's paranormal exploits.

Yet another audio book I couldn't finish. Got through a couple of chapters but just couldn't force myself to keep listening. I don't know why everything thinks this is so hilarious. Didn't laugh out loud once - not even a little. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you won't like this.

    "Great Series."

Love Molly Harper, and enjoy listening to Amanda Ronconi. This book sucked me in, and I literally was downloading the next book the following day. Harper's writing is excellent. Spit coffee out a couple of times while listening, so I don't recommend drinking liquids at the same time.

    "Love the humor"

In one book Molly Harper has entered my favor author list. Loved the humor in this book. Not only will I follow the adventures of Jane in subsequent books, but the sub-characters can easily stand on their own. Amanda Ronconi's narration is delightful. Harper and Ronconi are an unbeatable combination!

    "One listen wasn't enough!"

Molly Harper has endowed her main character, Jane, with a quick dry wit and believable personality, making this an extremely enjoyable story. Despite having read most of the other authors in this genre, I found that I was not tempted to draw comparisons with other vampire lore or story lines as this book is more than capable of entertaining from it's own perspective. In a nutshell, this heroine is not perfect, she sticks her foot in her mouth more often than a politician, refrains from declaring undying love to the hero of the story, even if he is drop dead gorgeous, and is over the age of 18 (meaning that sex scenes don't suddenly stop at the neck), who happens to have unreliable telepathic skills and has conversations with the ghost of her great aunt. Jane is a heroine I can really relate to (I'm a ghost tour guide with unreliable telepathic skills, if you're wondering). This book was so funny that I started playing it again as soon as it concluded. A terrific book with great narration by Amanda Ronconi. Buy it and laugh!

I just love this series of books! The interplay between the characters is very funny and the books just zip along. The narration by Amanda Ronconi is spot on and the story is very engaging.
As a 40 something truck driver who usually listens to Sci-Fi when travelling up and down the country you might not think that these books are aimed at me but I'm glad I gave them a try.

"Very enjoyable, light, humorous, vamp romance"

I picked this book out more or less at random as something light to listen to. I've been having difficulty reading actual text and I've turned to audiobooks to "read" more. I am particularly glad I picked this one.

Jane is a librarian who suddenly discovers herself to be unemployed, gets drunk at a bar, gets shot (mistaken for a deer), and has the choice of being dead, or undead. A few days later she wakes up a vampire. She has a best friend who is almost as dotty as she is, and an overbearing mother. But now that she's undead she has her favourite (dead) relative to keep her company and a suave, attractive sire who she fancies something rotten, but he did turn her into a vampire. On top of that, someone seems to have it in for her, and she needs a new job.

At least she lives in a world which knows vampires exist. The setting is wonderfully cynical; just my kind of concept. The existance of vampires was revealed as part of a disability lawsuit. Each chapter begins with a quote from the "Guide for the Newly Undead," and the local vampire community holds meet-and-greet parties for newbie vampires, hosted by a vampire property agent (how could anyone tell the difference).

The narration on this one is good. Amanda Ronconi pulls off the accents, even an English one, nicely and it felt like she enjoyed reading the story even as I laughed my way through it.

I'll be putting the second in the series on my wishlist.

"Very funny modern twist on vampire tale"

If you like Charlaine Harris then you will like this. Molly Harper writes with a funny, dry wit. Her tale of Jane Jameson's turning and life with her family, friends and boyfriend/sire is very engaging and had me laughing out loud while listening.

What did you like most about Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs?

Everything. It was brilliant. Absolutely hilarious, I mean laugh out loud funny. Amanda Ronconi delivers each character brilliantly and doesn't make them sound fake. She manages to portray male characters well too.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I have two. Dick, and Aunt Jetty.

    Any additional comments?

Highly recommended. I also recommend the other books in the series. They're all excellent.

What did you like best about Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs? What did you like least?

Loved the quirky take on vampires and their way of life: the guide for the newly undead! If I'm honest, I didn't feel that much chemistry between Jane and her 'maker' (sorry I'm a truebie!)

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jane- just the right amount of crazy!

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances? How does this one compare?

    Brilliant as ever!

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Of course! Vampires, werewolves, ghosts....what's not to love!

Would you consider the audio edition of Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs to be better than the print version?

I have not read the printed version but i really like the audio version

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs?

When Jane was just turned and woke up to see Gabriel and flew up to the ceiling

What does Amanda Ronconi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

she painted the picture superbly, i could not have done it if i was reading the book

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Every time Jane spoke i laughed..The girl is crazy!

    Any additional comments?

I already read all the books in the series and I absolutely loved them especially when Jane stuck it to her grandma, really enjoyed the books.

Loved it! The MC is entertaining, articulate, self-deprecating and delightfully ordinary. Well, considering. Her reaction to the events is quite plausible and the story develops nicely. I love her manic family as well. THe narrator is perfect for this.

If you are a lover of the Sookie Stackhouse - True Blood books, you'll love this!
It's funny, refreshing and made me smile. It's nowhere near as ermmm.... 'adult' or 'naughty' as the Charlaine Harris books but a good listen. I really liked the narrator, she has a great voice and accent. I listened to the whole book in three days (whilst doing house-work) and have just downloaded the next one which I'm looking forward to.
