Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The Molly Harper/Amanda Ronconi pairing has become the stuff of Audible legend, and it all started with this book. If you ever feel like the vampire romance genre has all gotten a little bit too serious and swooning for its own good, this is the perfect antidote. The kick-off to the delightfully quirky and laugh-out-loud funny Nice Girls;... series, as well as an equally popular spin-off series, this book has been a non-stop hit with our listeners. — Emily

Publisher's Summary

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.

Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and endure daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She's forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. Her relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn't enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What's a nice undead girl to do?

Love in vein: bite into more of Jane Jameson's paranormal exploits.

"Original Take on the Vampire Genre"
Would you listen to Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs again? Why?

Yes, the story was funny and original. I laughed out loud at some of Jane's antics.

What did you like best about this story?

The humor and fast paced story.

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first book I have listened to that was narrated by Amanda Ronconi. I enjoyed her performance of the book very much.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sometimes spending the night with a hot stranger can really SUCK!

    Any additional comments?

Give this book a listen, you wont be sorry.

    "Not your typical vampire book"

I loved this book - I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit throughout the story. Molly Harper has a sharp wit about her writing, and it was refreshing to have a vampire story that is unique. The narrator did a great job also. I am looking forward to the rest of the series!

    "Entertaining Enough"
What three words best describe Amanda Ronconi’s voice?

Sweet, southern, and only slightly distracting. I'm not a big fan of female narrators impersonating male voices.

Was Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs worth the listening time?

After coming off a pretty serious, long book, Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs was an enjoyable change of pace. This is the third vampire serious I've read, and I enjoyed the different perspective having the heroine being the vampire.

That said, the plot left a little to be desired. Most of the focus of the book was on Jane's development and life as a vampire. For more action oriented vampire stories, I would lean towards the Sookie Stackhouse series.

"Ironic Plain Jane Makes for Great Book"

Strangely, I found this series in the Romance section I believe while looking for a Sci-Fi book. While its main character Jane does date, with the usual adult accompaniments, they are not overdone, although I suppose that depends upon your tastes, but I would keep your children out of the room. The scenes are relatively pretty short.

The book is great, often cited as "laugh out loud funny". It is very humorous, hence making Plain Jane so ironic. There is nothing to which she cannot produce a witty comment or reply to whomever she may face, even in her pajamas, often worn, and I'll leave it to you to learn of their designs when you listen to the book. And yet her status in high school and her soon to be former occupation as it is portrayed would have you believe this woman is totally defenseless within the fabric of everyday life.

People usually use the word cadence to refer to the pattern or rhythm of sounds and there is a wonderful cadence to the narrator's performance, extremely well done, however...there is a cadence to Jane herself, to how she lives, to what happens to her, to how she handles things.

The cadence Molly Harper, the author, and Amanda Ronconi, the narrator, produce becomes very comforting and you nestle in to listen to what comes next and can then really appreciate the humor. Some lines are laugh out funny, but I personally didn't find most of them to be so. I was quiet, listening, tuned in...that rhythm of Jane's life, smiling and chuckling and yes, laughing, but briefly - I didn't want to miss the next part!

The series of "Nice Girls Don't..." is ultimately a series of mystery novels wrapped in a sci-fi romance humor book jacket. You will not be disappointed.

Note: If you listen to Molly Harper's "How to Flirt with a Werewolf" and the other associated werewolf book, know that Amanda Ronconi is again the narrator, which is well and good, but some of the characters sound exactly the same. Two love interests from two different books with the same voice...just know you have to make an adjustment. I had a very difficult time. I actually couldn't make the adjustment to the first werewolf book.

"Nice Girls Don't..." is the better series (and longer, Book 5 due out in print in the fall I believe) so if the same voices between series sounds awful to you, go with the wonderful, thorough, amusing Jane with much moxie, interesting and devoted friends, and the most trying of relatives.

    "Modern Day Vampire Tale"
Where does Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I liked the modern day take at the vampire genre - i.e. being able to buy fake blood at Walmart!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The enigmatic and mysterious Gabriel Nightingale

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have all 4 of the audiobooks in this series, I think this was the best though.

    "funny"

I thought that this was a great take on "vampires". The author has a wonderful sense of humor that I really connected with, kinda like my own. The narrator however, didn't have a very good range in the differant voices though.

"Book was okay- Narrator, not so much"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I found the voice of the narrator pretty annoying...especially when she did voices. The story was okay- but I'd probably read the book vs. listening.

Was Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs worth the listening time?

It was entertaining- but a read would have been better

    "A fluffy female vampire story."
What did you love best about Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs?

The story was rather weak. I would consider it an okay read. It would not encourage me to get the next one in the series.
