Editorial reviews

"Mika is a human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves." So boldly begins the bizarre and erotically explicit tale Mate Set: Mating Heat, Book 1, narrated with game, breathless enthusiasm by G. C. VonCloudts.

In this alternate world, the horny werewolves are in charge, the horny humans are the outcasts, violence lurks everywhere, and seemingly every man, woman, and animal has nothing but sex on the brain. Perhaps fans of True Blood will appreciate this steamy and vaguely creepy story.

Publisher's summary

It's werewolf mating season. All the males are in heat and the driving, sexual lust of their beasts is almost uncontrollable. Mika is human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves. She knows she's in deep shit. A tall, handsome werewolf rescues her then demands payment. Hot, sweaty, intimate payment.

Grady is a half breed whose human mother abandoned him to his werewolf father, so he knows human women just aren't safe to fall in love with. The wolf within him wants Mika as his mate, but Grady will not give in. Never. Ever. He's willing to fight his emotions and his beast, no matter how much sexy Mika tempts him.

But neither of them expected her Uncle Omar to assign Grady to protect her from other males - 24/7, in her home, sleeping just down the hall. Mika decides to make the best of her vacation and keep the hot wolf in her bed. Grady can't resist the scorching sex, but he is determined to resist the bond.

I loved this book!

I loved this book! Another new to me author and narrator, that hit it out of the park. The characters felt real to me (yeah, yeah, I know it's about werewolves...) and the pain and frustration they went through seemed true to life. I am looking forward to more by them (author/ narrator,) and can't wait to read the rest of the brother's books.

Smokin' HOT

I love when an alpha fights his feelings, but what I really love is how Ms. Laurann makes her alpha males be soooo damn sexy, powerful and have a sweetheart.

Grady is a sweetheart, he tries to do what he thinks is right but sometimes they just get it all messed up. Mika knows how and what he is, and that he will never willingly pick her to be his mate.

And Grady doesn’t want a human but his feelings and his natural instinct to be with Mika is clouding his brain. I love the back and forth these characters have. It is witty and snarky but fun and enjoyable to listen to.

When they said this was erotica they were not lying. It is smokin' hot people. Also, the narrator perfect choice loved, loved.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

I'm almost speechless.

I'll let you know now that there's a kind of spoiler in this review but nothing you won't expect, really. I have read so many dark romances it's impossible to count, including my fair share of paranormal, shifter, even serial killers, psychopaths/sociopaths, kidnappers, all of them. Grady was among the characters I have liked the least. I have so much to say about this book but it would take me days to type it all. Girl thinks she's manipulating guy for sex and guy ruins everything by not communicating anything until the end after hurting her plenty of times and having her unwillingly held to have sex with her and lying to her. Grady was not a character I ended up liking simply because one small apology and the fact they had good chemistry and all was forgiven. Bullshit. The female lead goes goo-goo eyed the second he reveals his feelings for her after all the horrid shit he does to her amidst a pack of not just dominant but also sexist werewolves that basically kidnap her for days and control her. What IS this? The redeeming parts of this book were the steamy scenes... that's what made it worth it but if you're looking for characters you'll love, don't count on it. It was worth the credit still since it was a unique story and sexy, but the fact of the matter is that "chemistry" was the only thing these two have in common. Also, what the heck happened with Omar in between her and Grady being in his dad's basement and the apology that magically fixes everything? He doesn't find out any of it in that time? I feel like Megan would have yapped to everyone about it if she liked him so much he was worried about her challenging the situation. I am just so frustrated that this male had almost no good qualities other than being good looking and a good lay. It was so surface level between these two on such serious issues that it took something serious away from the story, especially when we as the reader spend 6 odd hours listening to him fuck up this woman's life and heart. It frustrates me that an author would think this is okay. So once again, worth a read... well that depends on what you want out of it but it is hot as hell so that's something. I'm just going to consider it erotica and call it a day while I try to reconcile this in my mind.

Worth my credit! An enjoyable sex fantasy.

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. It was my first werewolf listen. This had A LOT of steamy sex. I like to get away from reality, this sex fantasy cured it for me. I'm getting the next book in series.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

I am a big fan of Laurann Dohner and have read all of her Cyborg, New Species and VLG series. This book is the start of another amazing one. I love the narrator G.C. VonCloudts. She does such a wonderful job of playing both male and female characters that you feel like your know them intimately. I recommend this series to everyone who likes sexy alpha males and sassy heroines who don't take shit from them. I was not given any promo codes to leave a review. I just love Laurann Dohner's books so much that i have bought everysingle one of her audiobooks.

Holy Howling Slight Spoilers/Trigger Warnings

So this audible was an incredibly hot, sex-focused story, with amazing narration and a happily ever after ending that fell very flat for me after the emotional, intense, gritty narrative. Right from the start this story starts into an attempted rape scene as a warning for those that this might trigger, and from that to a coerced sexual scene with the male who saved the female protagonist from her initial attackers.

What follows in the story is a series of very steamy sex scenes threaded together by the concept of mating season for the werewolves in the predominantly werewolf town. There is a lot of focus placed on the intensity of libido at this time of year and necessity of sexual encounters, and our main characters being a already very sexual werewolf male being forced to engage with a human woman. Their intensity and attraction are undeniable and also immediate, this is not a story where characters slowly develop a connection with one another. This can feel problematic for some as there actually seems to be nothing else going between this couple except sex. There also is very little provided about this world or the politics of the werewolves except regarding mating and sex. There is some tension between human and werewolf but with the writing at the end this is all pretty quickly dismissed as a misunderstanding, which feels a little jarring that all the tension and animosity built between several characters around the girl being human is almost magically resolved as if there is no longer any issues with this.

And this was my main issue with the story was the very tidy almost Disney like wrap up of and everything was happy. Part of what created such heat in this stories was the tension between the two characters, their gritty emotions, and unresolved internal conflicts. Having all of those things suddenly evaporate was very jarring and left me displeased with how things wrapped up, it was too easy and very unrealistic in contrast to the picture that had been painted through the whole book. Some of the characters at the beginning who are family don't even make an appearance at the back end of the book.

That aside I enjoyed a lot of the characters in the story and would have enjoyed seeing more of them outside of the sex scenes between the two main characters. This book could have been easily much longer and more flushed out. I know this author's other first volumes in a new series are almost twice the length of this book.

But I must take a moment to praise G.C. VonCloudts aka Savannah Richards whose real name is Therese Plummer is PHENOMENAL. Part of why this story was so intense and steamy was because of the massive talent and effort this narrator put in. Her male and female voices are excellent, her emotion so palatable, this was the first audible I found myself audibly gasping with shock in scenes or talking aloud in response because her narration was so emotionally provoking. I will definitely look forward to her other narrations.

Overall if you are looking for a sex focused, werewolf themed, light on story, heavy on emotions tale, this is definitely worth your time and I think you will be more than satisfied. For some the wrapped up neat and tidy ending will work, for others like me just know it might feel like a sudden brake in a speeding car.

My least favorite of all her books

Grady was awful and never redeemed himself. Mika needed to leave his ass. Didn't enjoy ending.

Female needs better character development.

Female character too immature. She responds like an immature adolescent. She jumps to conclusions throughout the book. Just doesn't work. Male character is just what you would expect. Handsome, alpha. so sexy.
