"Mika is a human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves." So boldly begins the bizarre and erotically explicit tale Mate Set: Mating Heat, Book 1, narrated with game, breathless enthusiasm by G. C. VonCloudts.
In this alternate world, the horny werewolves are in charge, the horny humans are the outcasts, violence lurks everywhere, and seemingly every man, woman, and animal has nothing but sex on the brain. Perhaps fans of True Blood will appreciate this steamy and vaguely creepy story.
It's werewolf mating season. All the males are in heat and the driving, sexual lust of their beasts is almost uncontrollable. Mika is human, in an alley, surrounded by four horny werewolves. She knows she's in deep shit. A tall, handsome werewolf rescues her then demands payment. Hot, sweaty, intimate payment.
Grady is a half breed whose human mother abandoned him to his werewolf father, so he knows human women just aren't safe to fall in love with. The wolf within him wants Mika as his mate, but Grady will not give in. Never. Ever. He's willing to fight his emotions and his beast, no matter how much sexy Mika tempts him.
But neither of them expected her Uncle Omar to assign Grady to protect her from other males - 24/7, in her home, sleeping just down the hall. Mika decides to make the best of her vacation and keep the hot wolf in her bed. Grady can't resist the scorching sex, but he is determined to resist the bond.

Wow this was super hot, I loved every minute of it. The book's summary wasn't intriguing enough for me to purchase it, but, I've enjoyed Dohner's other series so I figured I could risk it. I listened in one sitting--I was THAT hooked. If you want a story with a ton of depth, this isn't the one for you, but, if you're open to a bit of fantasy, seriously hot shifter sex, and definitely a lot of sarcasm, innuendo and humor, don't even read the rest of my review--'add to cart' immediately!
I really enjoy the world of books! Narration just add layers to that world... don't u think? :)
This was awesome after like the first 2 chapters... I was a bit confused then I realize by chapter 2 what was going on...and the story really takes off from there...
I loved the smexing... hotty hot!! Then Grady was an awesome confused alpha wolf... but Mika was awesome... I loved the way she taunted Grady...but I did want to slap her when she ran away from him... (but finding a naked werewolf chick in your newly mated shower will do that to a gyrl)!
Perfect Ending too... (wink) foreshadow to book 2... Can't wait to get to Anton's book!
Great job Dohner... please write more of the Harris Clan... I want a book from all 5 brothers...
Nice Credit, sale or buy... book is not that expensive...
Narration was awesome... VonCloudts is a great narrator... A new favorite...
I'm proud to be a bookaholic...addicted, obsessed, passionate!!! My favorite way to relax & escape reality....
First, I will admit there really wasn't a plot outside of the relationship between the hero & heroine. The story was focused on them, and them alone. Mika’s upbringing into a world of werewolf shifters and humans hasn’t exactly made her qualified to stay out of trouble. Although human herself, Mika’s uncle is a werewolf shifter and has taught her the ways of his pack… well almost all of them. Uncle Omar knowingly withheld vital information regarding mating season, thinking that this will keep Mika ‘innocent’ from the highly sexual natures of werewolf shifters. Her yearly vacation to visit with Uncle Omar couldn’t have come at a worse time. Now with Grady, his upbringing wasn’t exactly conventional either. His mother is a human who abandoned him to his father when she found out he could shift. Dealing with his abandonment issues has never been a problem since he’s in denial. Dealing with Mika when he’s assigned protection duties by her uncle, could prove to be disastrous. The two main characters are both very passionate and stubborn which leads to a physically explosive relationship from their first meeting. The emotional frustration kicks in when the characters start actually feeling something for one another but for Grady abandonment issues by a human woman is the drawback. Recommended for those seeking a highly passionate, highly sexual story that will pull you in all directions. Note to listener: if you’re looking for a new creative way to enjoy chocolate syrup, there’s a fantastic ‘recipe’ in this book.
This is my first time listening to this author, I find her writing close to the edge, but I like that. Mika was a little annoying at times but the story was good enough to over look her. A lot of new audio books are being narrated by very young voices, not so with this one. J.C. VonCloudts performance is excellent and I would look for more of her work.
Hot romance/Sci Fi we're so lucky to have Audible to feed our book addictions. I love walking my precious dog Sydney & listening to my books
Now I Love the Human Unknown and especially Werewolf's... Grady's sexual lust of his beast so Hot Hot Hot.... This book fulfilled all my Werewolf needs in every way.
Mika is on an evening trip to find some chocolate - problem is she doesn't realize it's mating season in the land of sifters where she is spending a couple of weeks visiting family. Poor girl finds herself confronted, beaten and almost raped by 4 very nasty males wanting to have their way with her. Grady hears her screams and takes on the 4 males in defense of her. With a bit of assistance to Grady from Mika, she manages to escape - she thinks. As she is making her way home, Grady finds her and calls in the debt owed him. Little does Grady know Mika's uncle is one of his pack leaders and Grady will need to protect her until the mating heat is over. Unfortunately, Grady also suffers the mating heat... and so the Sex Filled fun begins!
I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
Adopted Mira (the human heroine) get's caught in the middle of the Were mating season while visiting her Werewolf Uncle who appoints a bodyguard to watch over her until the 2 week 'frenzy' is over.
In prowls handsome Grady, a half breed Werewolf, who has trust issues with humans as he was abandoned by his human Mother so is seeking a Pureblood female to bond with. Trouble starts when he is forced to 'mark' Mira against his will and that's when the passion and non-stop sex really heats up. The problem is Mira's falling hard for him but Grady's human side is fighting a bond but his Wolf side is howling yes yes yes so sex is fine but he's in denial about his true feelings for Mira.
Mira came across as spoilt at times and did some dumb things and there wasn't really a plot other than mating mating and, yes you guessed it, more mating but despite this I really enjoyed all the emotional tension an turmoil as Grady finally had to decide what to do….. before time runs out.
Worth a credit? Well hello, hot hot hot Werewolf action, errr that would be a hell YEAH and I'm ready for Book 2..
Say something about yourself!
This book was funny, it reminded me a bit of the Molly Harper Werewolf books.
Mica is a human female that visits her uncle two weeks out of the year, he is a werewolf. He's made sure since she was 5 that she understood what he was and how to handle werewolves. What he didn't explain to her was how maybe she shouldn't come to town during the summer because that is mating season and well...ALL the werewolves are horny. She learns this first hand though after being accosted by 4 werewolves while she was walking to the store. Thankfully a sane werewolf came and rescued her, but he did demand a bit of payment of the sexual variety.
Mica's uncle realizes she isn't safe, she needs a guard. He has several pack mates come to the house and hes going to choose one based on who looks at her in the least sexual way. Mica thinks this is a ridiculous concept but is fairly shocked when she sees her rescuer from the night before....she won't look at him, he won't look at her, and poof that is her uncles choice for her guardian.
Comedy ensues, one mistake after the next, it was great to listen to these characters interact. "No, I didn't want to go out but she told me I either had to take her out or strip. You told me you would take my balls if I touched her, so stripping was out."
Great stuff, good for credit or buy and the narrator was good too!
I love books and love to get lost in the fantasy. I'm always looking for a new good story to bury myself in. :)
*** warning, this review might be a bit spoilerish****
I had mixed feelings about this story. It was well written and was alright but I had issues with the conflicts and the ways they were handled. Grady seemed iffy through most of the story and Mika was put in impossible situations that just made me feel bad for her. There is some insta-love going for those that don't like that sort of thing.
Mika lives in California and has a life but nothing is really holding her there. She has an uncle Omar that is a werewolf shifter and she goes back to her home town to visit him regularly. She's thought of moving back to be closer to him but he wants her to marry a human and thinks it's too dangerous for her to live there full time.
Grady is the first born of the pack Alpha in a wolf shifter pack. His mother was human and wasn't with his father when she started raising Grady. When he started showing signs of being a werewolf as a kid, Grady's mom found his dad and dropped Grady on his dad's doorstep. Unfortunately, Grady's dad's mate is a horrible woman who looked down on Grady because he was half human and wouldn't allow him to be taken in. Grady was raised by a number of families in the pack instead. Now he's known for staying away from humans except for the occasional one night stand.
Mika comes to town to visit for a couple weeks, She knows about shifters but her uncle doesn't bother to tell her that it's mating season (a time she's never visited before). This means that there are many strange werewolves in the area looking for sex and they're not all very picky about who they get it from. Humans are supposed to be off limits but not all the visitors follow the same rules. So Mika is in town and craving some chocolate so she goes for a stroll to the store and gets dragged in to an alley by 4 werewolves. She screams as they're trying to start a gang rape and before too long, Grady comes along and saves her. He then proceeds to come looking for some repayment (but they don't actually have sex). Mika is rather embarrassed by the whole thing (and was rather turned on by Grady) so she doesn't say anything to her aunt or uncle about the incident. Omar does finally realize that Mika needs guarded against the strange wolves in town and decides to draft one of the best enforcers in the pack, Grady.
So as her guard, Grady is staying with Mika 24/7 but pretty much treating her like crap and barely talking to her. She's pretty much locked in the house so she pushes to go out. They go to Grady's bar which is supposed to be safe ground but Mika almost gets abducted by a strange shifter right there in the bar and in order to save her from a horrible fate, Grady is forced to lay claim to her. Uncle Omar isn't happy about it but the way it happens means they have to have sex (during the rest of the mating season) or Grady will go crazy. Mika's Uncle basically gives her to Grady to have sex with for the next 2 weeks. Mika isn't all that happy about it at first but she was already attracted to Grady and figures she'll go along with it. Grady makes it very clear that he doesn't want a human mate so Mika knows she's headed for trouble when she realizes that she's fallen for Grady within the first couple days. Then she's pretty much plagued with life being horrible because Grady is constantly showing her that she's not what he wants and it hurts her. Grady is so clueless that he doesn't realize what the heck is going on or that his actions are hurtful. This pretty much continues until the end and then was have a whiplash turnaround and Grady and Mika get their HEA.
To be honest, the way the story went just didn't work for me, probably because I'm not in to the constant drama. The forced situations and frequent ups and downs (but mostly downs) wasn't really my thing so I had trouble getting fully in to the story. I liked Mika and wished for her to get her happiness but I was less than convinced that Grady would be the one to give it to her (at least until the last 5% of the book). I can see someone liking this story that was more in to the forced situations and big drama. I may try the next book in the series as I've heard it's better than this one and I do like the author. :D
Live, love, laugh...
Well it seems that my very favorite narrator is now using the pseudonym GC VanCloudts. I believe her original name is Therese Plummer and she can narrate a newspaper and make it sound like the most fascinating thing you've heard. Yes, she's that good.
The story was just ok for me. It was very hot and heavy but I felt like the story was mostly about sex. The paranormal world wasn't developed and I kept wondering what our main couple had in common besides strong libidos. That said the story did spark my curiosity and I will be listening to other books in this series as long as they are narrated by this same amazing narrator.
Beth Anne Bell
I would recommend anything by Laurann Dohnner. I have read all her books and love the fact that I can now listen to them when I am doing chores and driving.
I believe my favorite moment in the book is when Mika and Grady run into each other after they have already met and have to keep the fact from Mika's uncle Omar.
My favorite scene was when Grady has to explain himself for the fact he lied to Mika and had to explain why he was trying to trick her into thinking Mating Season was still happening.
I had strong reactions as a woman. I could feel how hurt Mika is during the whole book and how being a human makes it impossible to make Grady love her.
Sometimes Grady is a huge jerk, but he can also be the most sweet man in the world. He takes Mika on a wild ride of emotions until they finally get together and settle into a couple who can manage both worlds.
"Worth listening to again"
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Very good narration helped to add interest to the story too
