Publisher's summary

Once upon a time… the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs - and time is running out.

Nicolai the Vampire was renowned for his virility, but in a twist of fate “The Dark Seducer” had become a sex slave in the kingdom of Delfina - stripped of his precious timepiece and his memory. All that remained was a primal need for freedom, revenge - and the only woman who could help him.

In her dreams, a wanton vampire called to Jane Parker, drawing her to his dark sexuality and his magical realm. But for a human, all was not a fairy tale in Delfina. Jane was the key to Nicolai’s memory… but exploiting her meant dooming the only mortal he craved.

This is the first book in Royal House of Shadows. The Quartet features new books from some of the biggest names in paranormal fantasy romance: Gena Showalter, Jill Monroe, Jessica Andersen, and Nalini Singh. Listen to a new book in the series every month, from now through November.

Just awful!!

Two words…JUST AWFUL! Were the producers on vacation when this book was recorded? The narrator made Nicolai sound like a big stupid oaf. This book was completely ruined by the cheesy dialogue between the characters. I understand that Nicolai had no memory of his past and all, but the whole you female me Neanderthal thing going on left me wanting to ask the author what were you thinking? I could not finish this book which was a shame because the concept of the story had real potential. Ugh!

Save your credits...pass this one by.

I have read most of Gena Showalters books and have enjoyed them, but this one is just bad. The story line is lame and the dialogue between the characters is pathetic. Alot of time the "Hero" reverts to caveman speak..."Must have"...wow really really bad bad bad.

Really?

I truly am a fan of Gena Showalter. I LOVE her lords of the underworld series. There just wasnt anything of interest to this book. It was almost as if she took left over outtakes and plot lines from her other books and mashed them together and put it to new names. I was very disappointed. But there might be others out there who love it. To each his or her own. I will always read the new LORDS but wont read/listen to another one of these if this is what i get. It was a waste of money :(

Not for Nuns

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Genvieve Bevier.

This story mostly follows Nicolai and Jane as they escape from the evil clutches of some regal witches and work their way back to Nicolai’s kingdom. Nicolai is a vampire who has been enslaved as a sex slave and Jane is a modern day woman who has been transported back in time to where Nicolai is being held in a castle.

First, I must tell you that I don’t usually read erotica and I didn’t realize that this book was in that category. The reason I don’t read erotica is because I like to have some story with a little sex thrown in, not some sex with a little story thrown in.

I liked the idea of this story but, the actual story involved a lot of caveman type sentences for the main character, Nicolai. There was no build up of romance between the main characters. Just throw them into a room together and let the gyration begin. It kind of blew the top off of my prude-o-meter.

I think for those who like erotica, this book would fit right in squeezed between another hot, steamy book and juicy novel dripping with desire. 

The Narration Review
For the most part, Genvieve Bevier did an okay job narrating this story, until it came to the main character, Nicolai. I did not enjoy her voice for him at all. It sounded like she was trying too hard to create a male sounding voice and it just came out wrong.

Can I give the Narrator a zero star?

I LOVE Gena Showalter. She is one of my favorite authors. I thought the story had potential but the narrator was just AWFUL!!! I read other reviews and thought, "it's Gena I have to give it a try". Wow! I was so wrong. I probably would have loved this book in print. I don't like to give negative reviews but this narrator should consider another line of work.

Narration ruined this for me

Although I love anything written by Gena Showalter, the narrator ruined this book for me. Her constant imitation of William Shatner's "Captain Kirk" was like nails on a chalkboard and she made the "hero" of the story sound (to put it plainly) like a total doofus.
I would recommend reading this one. Buying the audio version is a waste of money.

Yick! Narrator is horrible

The performance was so bad, it's hard to tell what the story was like...I like Showalter's Lords of the Underworld, but this wasn't one of her best - I think...won't listen to books read by this narrator again...

Don't waste a credit

What disappointed you about Lord of the Vampires?

Don't know why this story has as many stars as it does - the narration is so bad it is impossible to get past the weird cadence to hear the story.

Has Lord of the Vampires turned you off from other books in this genre?

No,

Would you be willing to try another one of Genvieve Bevier’s performances?

This is the second audiobook this narrator has ruined for me. I'll be more careful in the future

Showalter normally an excellent author but....

perhaps it's partly the narration, but I was left slogging through tarzan meets Jane (almost literally) with vampires and almost a pornographic amount of sex. If you enjoyed the Beauty series from Anne Rice you might enjoy this actually. The storyline sounded so very interesting - I wish it had been.
