Down, Boy

Anna Moder has just witnessed a shooting, seen her car pulverized, and rescued a wounded stranger - only to discover he's really a werewolf. And by her recent standards, things are actually looking up. Lycanthropes don't faze Anna. Doctoring a wolf pack outside Grundy, Alaska, is the closest thing to home life she's known in years. But hitching a ride to Anchorage with long-absent pack member Caleb Graham - that's a risk. Part of her itches to whack his nose with a newspaper. The rest is trying unsuccessfully to keep her own paws off every delicious inch of him.

The problem is, Caleb employs his lupine tracking abilities as a not-quite-legal bounty hunter, and Anna is suspicious of both him and his profession. On the run from her past, with old problems closing in, she'd like to stay far, far away from anybody with connections to the law. Caleb, however, seems determined to keep her close. Are his intentions noble, or is he working a more predatory angle?

Anna's been dreaming of returning to a semi-normal life, but now she's experiencing a strange new urge...to join Caleb in running with the wolves.

Hilarious and poignant!

Molly Harper is just one of those authors that I connect with very easily and she always provides me with a good, entertaining story. While her Naked Werewolf books have not been my favorites, I still enjoy the Alaskan setting and her personal twist on the werewolf romance. How to Run with a Naked Werewolf is the third (and possibly last) of the series and is definitely my favorite. This particular story provides readers with two strong-willed and fully-developed characters in Anna and Caleb, a fun road romance, and a nice balance between Harper's classic humor and a more serious tone in relation to Anna's past.

Anna Moder was the director of the medical clinic in the Crescent Valley, a community of werewolves in the middle of rural Alaska. Dr. Moder is a human who was placed in the Valley to handle the government required paperwork associated with births/deaths that could be seen as suspicious by people who are unaware of the existence of supernatural creatures. But, she is hiding a big secret that forces her to run from one of the only places she's ever thought of as home. Of course, it is through pure irony that, while running, Anna is thrown into a difficult, but hilarious situation with one of the few Valley residents she never met, Caleb Graham.

I absolutely adored Anna's character! She is the quintessential Molly Harper heroine with her quirky sense of humor, independent spirit, and ability to just go with the flow in even the weirdest of circumstances. But, what made her stand out to me was that she was able to maintain such a personality after going through such trauma in her past. It is quickly revealed that Anna is running from an abusive husband who is obsessed with finding her and her ultimate goal is to get to Anchorage where a contact will help her develop a new identity. I really appreciated the obvious research that was done on domestic abuse which showed great respect for those who find themselves in such situations.

Caleb was a minor character in The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf and all that fans of the series really knew about him was that he was a loner who worked as a bounty hunter. This book provides more insight into both his job and how it reflects his personality. His own family situation has shaped him to avoid settling down until he meets Anna and is thrown for a loop from that point on. I loved the combination of strength and vulnerability that is found in Caleb. He is an alpha hero, but has some beta characteristics that I appreciated. For instance, he is very protective of Anna especially after learning about her past, but, for the most part, avoids smothering Anna's spirit because that is something that attracted him to her in the beginning.

This story mostly revolves revolves around Anna and Caleb's travels with her trying to get to Anchorage and him trying to make a living. I loved all the unique characters that this couple gets to meet as they work on Caleb's cases with one of my particular favorites being Trixie, the Amazonian stripper with an unfortunate medical issue. I do think this book could be read as a stand-alone since most of the plot takes place away from Grundy and the Crescent Valley, but, for long-time fans, it was great to see cameos of some of our favorites like Mo, Cooper, Samson, Maggie, and Nick. And for Harper fans in general, there is a fun and surprising scene with two of my favorite characters from her other paranormal series.

I listened to How to Run with a Naked Werewolf on audio with Amanda Ronconi as the narrator. I have said it many times, but it always bears repeating. Amanda Ronconi just gets Molly Harper's writing style and voice. Her performances are always entertaining and just make me laugh out loud at certain parts. I've never actually read a Molly Harper book so I can't attest to their entertainment value as paper copies but the audio versions are some of the best I've listened too. If you want to give Harper a try, I can't recommend listening to one of Ronconi's narrations enough.

My two favorite stories finally came together!

So happy they finally completely acknowledged this story is in the same universe as the Half moon Hollow story. I mean I knew they were because in the first book Mo ordered books from Specialty Books and in one of the books for Half-moon Hollow they said someone in Grundy Alaska ordered a bunch of werewolf mating books, but there were times in the story where I thought those were just nods to the fans. Since some of the characters in this series acted shocked or surprised when the werewolves ain’t deny Vampires existed. That threw me off since in Half moon Hollow the big plot point is that the vampires were forced out of the “coffin” with the bug coming out and the humans went crazy with trying to kill them or protect themselves before just learning to adapt. But now I get concrete proof having Dick and Andrea show up!!

Queen of lighthearted paranormal romances!

Molly Harper is the queen of lighthearted paranormal romances! She is quite humorous, leaving me smiling for hours after setting her stories down. She creates a world that is believable yet adventurous! Her handling of a story of domestic violence and this character's journey out into freedom and a HEA love touched me. I adore her style and compassionate manner.
It was a cool transition into her Half Moon Hollow series, as she introduced new characters!
Fabulous read from start to finish!

Really good addition to the series. :D

4-4.5 stars

This was a really good story. I loved both Caleb and Anna and it's a very good addition to the Naked Werewolf series.

Anna is in hiding due to a stalking/violent husband that wont leave her alone. She is a doctor but can't work under her own name. She finds work in Alaska under an assumed name through a Network that helps women in trouble like her. The work is as a doctor for a small town and once there, she finds out they're a town full of werewolves. She stays there for a few years but when she gets a warning that her husband may have tracked her down, Anna runs from her home and job. After some traveling to get away, she ends up in a temp job for some cash before moving on to Anchorage but things go wrong when she gets caught up in a shooting.

Caleb is a werewolf and works as a bounty hunter. Caleb is a good guy and I really liked his character but his jobs aren't always on the right side of the law. He's been traveling around Alaska a lot for his job and has been away from his pack for years (since his dad died). Caleb ends up in a parking lot in a small town and gets caught up in a mis-understanding that gets him shot. He's unexpectedly saved from getting run over by a human female.

Anna is leaving her job when she hears men arguing and ends up witnessing Caleb being shot. When his opponent attempts to run Caleb over after shooting him, Anna saves him and takes him far away in an attempt to get away from the crazy shooter. Soon enough she realizes what Caleb is but when he wakes up she doesn't let on that she knows and just tries to get away from him. When Caleb wakes up and realizes what happened he has no intention of letting Anna get away from him. He's determined to keep her safe and convinces her to ride with him to Anchorage. The ride is interesting and at first Anna is still very jumpy and unwilling to trust Caleb but as she spends more time with him, she realizes he's a good guy and starts to trust him enough to stick around. Eventually she even starts helping Caleb with his work as they travel. Things stay at "just friends" for a while as they travel and work together but the attraction is there for both of them.

Because of Anna's situation with her Ex, she's used to hiding who she is and any details. Caleb tries to get her to share with him but what she tells him is limited. Things aren't easy as they both are keeping secrets and when things come out it causes some major strife and trust issues. There's also the fact that Anna's Ex is getting closer and it freaks her out and causes her to make stupid moves. Caleb and Anna get closer and go past just friendship. I really liked seeing how they came together and liked Caleb a lot with how he went about it. There's some drama but Anna eventually digs deep and figures out what is important for her. Anna and Caleb decide to be together but still have issues to face in the form of Anna's Ex. Unfortunately he's quite psychotic and isn't willing to let her go. There is more drama before all is settled but in the end we get a sweet HEA for Anna and Caleb.

This was a really good story. I loved the characters and it was a good story with humor, suspense and romance. It's a really good addition to the Naked Werewolf series and I can't wait for the next book in the series. Also, there's a surprise cameo of a couple of characters from the Jane Jameson series that was a really cool treat. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up. :D
