Publisher's summary

The ruthless enforcer of Scotland's most powerful clan, Jamie Campbell will use any means necessary to vanquish lawlessness and unrest among the feuding Highland clans. Seduction is a game as easily played as subterfuge, but when Jamie poses as a suitor to a rival clan's daughter in order to expose treason, the line between duty and pleasure is suddenly blurred. Ebony-haired, ruby-lipped Caitrina Lamont defies him, denies him, and arouses him like no other woman. Caitrina has no intention of forsaking her beloved father and doting brothers for a husband-especially a hated Campbell. But Jamie's raw, sensual strength and searing kiss melt her resistance. When her idyllic world is shattered, Caitrina's only hope to save her clan lies in the arms of Jamie Campbell, the enemy she holds accountable for its ruin. Can their tenuous truce, born in the velvet darkness of passionate nights, forge a love as strong as the sword that rules the Highlands?

Critic reviews

"Sexy, full of action, and realistically violent, this story of 17th-century Scotland touches on issues of family loyalty and duty and expertly kicks off McCarty's back-to-back Clan Campbell trilogy." ( Library Journal)

Good but x rated

Good story but too vivid sex scenes and too frequent for my taste in a book

Expected to Hate the Heroine

From the many reviews describing the heroine of the story as obnoxious, naive, selfish, etc I figured I'd really dislike the heroine but still enjoy the story.
Though the heroine was naive and selfish at times, I think the reviews criticizing her failed to see how complex and nuanced her character and story are. The book was really very good as was the narration. I definitely recommend purchasing.

Got a sex scene? Now write a story around it!

I am so very glad that I got this book on sale!
Monica McCarthy is a new author to me, and I am not impressed.
This story lacks "reason-ability" I found it to be both frustrating and predictable.
I do not recommend this book if you like clever stories, with smart reasonable female characters.

Couldn’t get through it

I’m not sure if it was the pace or content but I was not able to finish the book. I read through chapter 11 and then skipped to the last chapter. I was disappointed to read that even in the last chapter they still had not gotten a true understanding of each other until the very end.

Don’t bother

Story line could have been great...but the heroine is the most ridiculously selfish character and destroys the story completely. Not worth the effort.

Exhausting

The narrator was good but the heroine was childish, stubborn, and unlikable. I found myself wishing I could skip past her 'I don't trust you' issues as it felt like that was a vast majority of the content.

Petulant child of a heroine ruins

The heroine is unbearable. The first 40% of the book she is a self-absorbed child with the cognitive sophistication of an 11 year old. It’s beyond sheltered. She’s awful.

The next 30% is ok and basically sex and just the two of them. The final 25% she’s again a petulant demanding child who utterly refuses to grow in any way. She’s the worst.

The hero is fabulous. But it’s hard to understand why he’s with her because she betrays him, weaponizes sex to manipulate him, and expects absolute fealty from him while she demonstratively refuses to give it herself.

As so many others have said, this book is unbearable because of the heroine. It’s a disappointment, because I’ve read many other Highlander books by Monica McCarty. This book is one of her worst. Hard pass.

Only 50% Story

What would have made Highland Warrior better?

Most of the story simply describes in detail the sexual relationship of the two main characters, followed by their misunderstandings of each other. The book is dull and slow moving.

Would you ever listen to anything by Monica McCarty again?

Since this was my first time to listen to one of her books, (and I did so because it was on sale) I doubt I would listen to another.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It would be hard to detract from such a tedious book. The narrator's challenge would have been to have a greater variety in showing some kind of enthusiasm, in making the characters live to the listener.
