New York Times best-selling author Julie Garwood takes breathless sensuality to thrilling heights in this unforgettable adventure of passion and intrigue.
The Emerald flew across the seas, carrying the pirate Pagan - despised by the ton, whose riches he plundered, and beloved by the poor, whose plight was eased by his gifts.
The Marquess of Cainewood vows to hunt down the pirate wretch in revenge for his brother's death. But when Jade, an enchanting vision of rippling red hair and eyes of jewel-green, appears at his door to beg desperately for his protection, the Marquess agrees to keep her safe from the villains who want her dead. Jade is infuriating, exasperating, and gorgeous; Caine is noble, strong-willed, and powerful. No woman has ever befuddled him so, nor so deeply aroused his desire. But as Jade answers his knowing caresses with an innocent, wild abandon, they are drawn into a web of treachery that will test the very heart of their love!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book when I read it years ago and now after listening to it I came to appreciate it in a whole new way. This book really grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept my interest throughout. Its romantic, funny and so delightful. This is one to keep on the revisit list.
The narrator was wonderful. She does a great job fluctuating her voice with the written word (i.e. whispering). It really makes the book come alive.
I have a PhD in American Literature but my love affair with romance novels on audible is going strong.
The descriptions of the plot can't begin to tell the real story without spoiling the story, so disregard most everything you read in the publisher's data. This is a delightful story with a fabulous pair of lovers, where the woman is delightful. There's humor and danger and plenty of loving and exciting action. It's the 2nd in the series, and though it can stand alone, I'd definitely start right at the beginning.
I purchased this book based on reader’s reviews and am so glad I did. This book actually has a couple of nice twists to it that I did not expect. Certainly made the story more interesting. Again here we have a strong female character and a kind but strong male character as well. Here we have again a woman who is raised by “savages” and turns out to be a great human being just as the last book in the series “The Lion’s Lady”. Wonderful passionate scenes and good storyline make it a nice read. Do women like this really exist back then? I ‘d love to think so. I highly recommend this book.
The story is interesting if not typical but the narrator drove me insane with her constant whispering. I literally found myself groaning every time she did it which was quite often. Will never listen to another book narrated by this women!
I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
For any historical/romance lover who has read, or listened to, any of Julie Garwood's books in this genre then you pretty much know what you're going to get - a listen that will whisk you back in time to give you a glimpse of a story that you just won't want to leave.
This was exciting right from chapter one and continued to entertain me with humour, passion, plot twists, mysteries, not too explicit sex scenes, some really amusing characters that get themselves tied up in a funny, yet tender, romance about revenge, treachery, deceit and desire. The chemistry between Jade and Caine was the real focus of the story and, once again, JG's delivers a hero and heroine that are likeable and with whom you can sympathise with.
This was originally written in 1990 so I hope Audible will catch up with the rest of the series and add The Gift (1991) and Castles (1993) to it's library soon. It does have characters from book 1 The Lion's Lady but this could easily be a stand alone listen.
Worth a credit? It would have been, but at $7.34 for over 12 hours of listening pleasure, I just bought it and saved my credit for a pricier book - that may not be as enjoyable as this was but is double or treble the price.
Every sentence had the exact same intonation. I eventually was able to ignore it to get through the story. I have always loved Julie Garwood and this one didn't disappoint as far as writing went
Honestly I couldn't even make it thru the fist two chapters, I read others reviews but I had no idea how bad the whispering was. Just painful to listen to. I was really in the mood for an audiobook too but couldn't handle it.
Don't know couldn't even make it.
Voices, no mock fake whispering that reminds me of annoying coworkers!
Just don't do it. Buy the book

This is one of my favorite Garwood titles and Duerden did an wonderful job of bringing the story to life. With the exception of Jade's character, everyone else was as I had imagined when reading the story. In Jade's case, I felt she sounded too young and inexperienced to be a pirate or a woman who had lived on an island surrounded by different cultures. I don't think it was a problem with the overall narration just the narrator's choice of voice.
