Guardian Angel: Crown's Spies, Book 2 | [Julie Garwood]

Guardian Angel: Crown's Spies, Book 2

The Emerald flew across the seas, carrying the pirate Pagan - despised by the ton, whose riches he plundered, and beloved by the poor, whose plight was eased by his gifts. The Marquess of Cainewood vows to hunt down the pirate wretch in revenge for his brother's death. But when Jade, an enchanting vision of rippling red hair and eyes of jewel-green, appears at his door to beg desperately for his protection, the Marquess agrees to keep her safe from the villains who want her dead. Jade is infuriating, exasperating, and gorgeous; Caine is noble, strong-willed, and powerful. No woman has ever befuddled him so, nor so deeply aroused his desire.

    "Good Listen"

Very good series. Julie Garwood is by far one of my favorite author's. The story had a little adventure, mystery and of course romance. It kept me interested to the end.

"Buy the book instead...don't waste a credit."

The story was so-so at best - I have certainly read many better, even by this same author. The female lead was naive and timid one minute, and a regular shrew the next. She was also illogical beyond belief, even when she wasn't "pretending". The male lead suffered from frustration throughout, trying to figure her out. I just couldn't see what they saw in each other. The romance was never convincing to me.

The "mystery" part of this story was only sketchily drawn out, and included very little detail or character development. That's another reason I think this would be better if read.....easier to turn back the pages to see who was who.

But I believe the biggest part of my disappointment was due to the narrator, who was just plain annoying. Nice voice, but no real distinction between the characters. And wherever the author wrote, "she whispered", or "he whispered", that is exactly what the narrator did. I can't fault her for trying to follow what the author wrote, but I think it would have been better if she just lowered her voice rather than actually whispering. Also, I couldn't tell if the book was intended to be as "tongue in cheek" as the narrator portrayed. She used the same tone for every situation, whether it was humor, panic, fear, anger, sadness or just plain serious conversation. All she did was change the volume. Very difficult to interpret what was going on.

    Not recommended.

    "Not the best"

Ordinarily I love Julie Garwood. Her heroines are smart, witty and funny. This one was annoying. I could not wait for the book to be over. It did get better toward the end but the first 6 hours of babble almost made me stop listening.

    Story
    "Cute & Funny"

This is a cute & endearing story that follows "The Lion's Lady." The relationship between Caine, the Marquess of Cainewood and Jade is similar to that of Lyon and Christina, the characters from "The Lion's Lady." Jade strings together an array of varied stories that keep Caine confused, piqued and very interested in keeping her safe. Although he does not believe each of her stories (reasonably so), he is aware that she is in real danger. He is hopelessly drawn to her, and she to him.....as Christina (Lyon's wife) put it, "it's destiny."

Jade's stunning beauty and off-kilter antics allow her to hook Caine's attention and forge a burgeoning relationship. It starts off with, and centers on Jade's uncanny ability to present herself as a damsel in distress and in need of Caine's protection, when in fact, she is on a mission to keep him safe from a conspiracy that unknowingly threatens his life and the life of those he loves. Caine, blames the pirate Pagan for the death of his brother, Colin. However, there are so many twists and unexpected surprises throughout the book that Caine finds that who he once considered an enemy was truly his champion.

I like Jade, the heroine of the story because of her creativity & imagination. She has a photographic memory and is an expert at manipulation. She's quite effective in her manipulation mainly because the men around her tend to underestimate women, in general. Although she manipulates, it's done with good intentions since she is trying to preserve many secrets from prematurely coming to light and her # 1 goal is to keep everyone safe. She is silly and can drive you nuts because she constantly goes off-topic, gives half-details that compel others to "fill in the blanks" with their own erroneous assumptions, and she LOVES TO PRESS CAIN'S BUTTONS!!! Jade drives Caine nuts!!! That part is cute & funny. Although Jade comes across as silly, it's a done purposely to keep Caine & his friends "in the dark" and unaware until the appropriate time to unveil the truth. She's pretty powerful....and it like it!

I really liked Caine as well, bless his heart. He is high-strung, but also playful. He has a lot of patience when dealing with Jade. He is definitely attracted to her physically, but he is also intrigued by her character. He detects that there is more to her than the rambling, silly woman under his protection. He wants to know more about her and falls in love with her possessively and without restraints. Caine is a definite man's-man. He's a warrior, a protector and quite loyal when he falls in love. And, he definitely has fallen in love with Jade. He does not let her go, even when she insists on it. He can be a little heavy-handed, but overall I think Jade handles him well. They both suit each other well since they are both strong characters. The chemistry between the two is magnetic.

This story unfolds like the peels of an onion; in layers. You will not be transported to any fanciful society setting such as balls, horse rides in the country, shopping experiences etc., but the focus is on character development and dialogue. This is the book of chatter! Most of the book takes place in sitting rooms and studies while a diverse group of people including crown spies, duke/duchess, pirates, and undercover agents come together to try and figure out an elaborate governmental conspiracy and mysterious villain.

    Annoying Aspects (but bearable):
I'm not sure why exactly Julie Garwood wrote with a keen focus on the character's voice & volume. Jade is constantly whispering to emphasize her points. Most of the time, Caine is yelling over her...but most of it works because it's funny. Jade is an adorable little actress and keeps Caine in constant circles to keep him hooked and distracted from his pursuit of vengeance for his brother's death. If you can get over the "she whispered" and "he bellowed"...you'll be fine....lol

    "All that Whispering"

I really loved everything about this book except the narration. There was so much whispering and since I didn't read the written version I don't know if that was the author's intent, but for me it ruined the experience.

As I said, the story itself was excellent as I expect from Garwood. The characters were fun and well developed.

If the narration doesn't bother you, it's worth your time.

    "Terrible"

I normally like Julie Garwood's books but this was so awful I couldn't get past the first 40 minutes. My dislike of the characters and the story was made worse or perhaps caused by the awful narrator - so whiney sounding. Give this book a pass.

I forgot what a delight this book was to read. Hearing it on audio was even better. No one does it better than Julie Garwood. All of these character's are a treat. Getting Jade and Christina, from Lyons lady together was really entertaining for me.

    "Pagan vs. Hunter."

Glad to see another one of Julie Garwood's older books on audible and at a good price. Two more in the series to complete, but I'm hopeful we will see them. It is a sweet and silly romance with good characters. I'm a fan of Julie Garwood's older works, unfortunately her newer stuff is missing that special spark that she creates with this series and her highland books. Narrator was okay, sometimes a little on the screechy side.
