This is a standalone.
After a phone call changes my life, I shut the world out. I'm paralyzed by the fear gripping me; the darkness becomes inescapable. When I refuse to open my door, my best friend goes to the most notorious man in town. Bruno's known to everyone in the neighborhood - he's feared and only spoken about in whispers. Only there's a problem: After he breaks down my door, he doesn't want to leave.
I never expected to find a man with a heart bigger than his reputation. But just like illusions, things are never what they seem. With fear surrounding me, only he can chase away the shadows.
This isn't your typical love story - it's a story of fight and survival. Most importantly, it's about finding the light and basking in the rays.

Too busy to read as much as I'd like, Audible is the perfect solution. I'm a romance reader mostly, but can stray into any story.
I will start with all the positive. This alternative love story is told so sweetly in its own special way. The characters were well developed and I can tell that a lot of cancer research was done with this book. Time passed quickly and I really grew attached to this book.
For the negative there are 2 very big book sins that were committed, in my opinion. #1 Holes. Although we knew Bruno was not in a legal profession, it was not something that should not have been addressed AT ALL. There was way too much focus on it for it to not have caused a complication in the book or for it to have been found out. I hate holes in plots. #2 The cover & description. I know it's lame to judge a book by it's cover, but the cover literally has nothing to do with the book and doesn't represent it at all. As is the description.
So if you are going to read this book, and I DO recommend reading it, please know that this is a story of a woman who finds out she has cancer. She is essentially alone in this world until Bruno shows up and literally forces himself into her life. It is sweet and not raunchy and cheap like the cover suggests.
Erin Mallon is a narrating Goddess. Her tone, inflections, character voices... All of it. Magical and perfection. Lance was only in the epilogue and prologue and I could have lived without his voice. Erin's male voice was way sexier and possessive and alpha.
Unexpected love story of a woman who has just found out that she has cancer and the tough, mysterious guy from the club who becomes her love, her light and her tether to life during chemo. Chelle Bliss writes families like no other.
I'm a voracious audiobook listener. I'm always looking to discover new and promising authors.
I loved this book from first chapter. It has mystery ( in the form of Bruno) realism, heartbreak and boundless, selfless love all rolled into one story. Plenty of steamy scenes too. But a study in rising above and taking the good with the bad.
The narrators did a fantastic job. Couldn't have done a better job.
Great story through and through. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Surprising, serious, humorous
This is my first Chelle Bliss novel, but I have listened to other books narrated by narrator Erin Mallon before. I have this novel now in several formats - autographed paperback, e-book and audiobook. As an audiophile, I knew I would read it sooner if I chose the audiobook format.
Lance Greenfield is new to me, but I'm a huge fan of Erin Mallon. Erin never disappoints, and Lance sounded great as well
Yes, if I had that luxury I totally would have.
A ♥Favorite♥ Quote by Callie: ‘Bruno is more than my boyfriend. He is the light that brought me back from the darkness. He chased away my fears and gave me the strength to fight. With his help, I have the most important thing in the world–time.’ ★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★★¸¸.•*¨*•★♥♥♥♥★¸¸.•*¨*•★WARNING: A ★SPOILERY★ Favorite Quote by Bruno:‘I was given the right to pick his middle name. I couldn’t give him mine, and no, I’m not telling you what it is either. I chose Ray. Because as much as Callie says I’m her light, she’s mine. Our baby is the thing that binds us together for eternity.’
The book starts with Cal getting slammed with some news that puts her into an emotional tail spin and Bruno steps in to help her. Bruno is a known criminal and an all around scary guy with his dominating presence and strong, eerily-quiet demeanor. But when Bruno steps in to help Cal, she sees a whole other side to him. Cal has to decide which is the real Bruno and in the end, if it even matters to her.
If I had to pick a downside to this book it would be her relationship with her best friend. She basically pushes her away the entire book and the best friend is extremely gullible and doesn't seem to know Cal at all. However I really like the new relationships that Cal gains with Bruno's family.
The narration is very well done. 95% of the narration is done by Erin Mallon and she does a great job with all the voices. I have listened to her in other books and she always does well.
Lots of emotional story here including not only in the present but also in their pasts. Be prepared for a lot of feels!
Would definitely recommend for a credit/buy.
It started off a bit slow for me and was a different kind of love story. The plot definitely threw me for a loop. I never expected such a traumatic situation for a love story but it was a nice change. I also never expected such a detailed description of the healing process and I had come to appreciate it. I liked it.
I may be addicted to audiobooks. I love my husband and my kids but I get a chance to escape with the books and be someone else for a while
This book looked like it would be a romance based in the cover however, it was nothing like you'd expect. There are some powerful and hot romance scenes but the overall gist is much better. This book brought me to tears... in the best way possible!!!
What a beautiful story, the synopsis didn't indicate it would be this explicit about illness but it was excellent and beautifully narrated with both Lance and Erin lending so much emotion to the story.
It was also refreshing to have a beautiful accomplished lead lady in her 30s. (I'm getting tired of the genre only targeting 20 yr olds, like life and romance stop before you reach 30??? Or you can only experience life's dilemmas in that decade), Chelle Bliss did a really good job with this storyline.
Wow what an amazing story with loveable characters you can't help but care about. A very delicate subject written so beautifully, made me smile, laugh and cry. Would highly recommend it. Erin Mallon is awesome x
