Publisher's summary

It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business professionals unwound with a few drinks, complained about the boss, maybe hooked up with someone for the night. Until something went terribly wrong. At first it was just a friction in the air. The noise intensified. The crowd seemed oppressive. Some sharp words were exchanged, some pushing and shoving.

Then the madness descended. And after 12 minutes of chaos and violence, 80 people lay dead.

Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things - monsters and swarms of bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia. When forensics makes its report, the mass delusions make more sense: it appears the bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs that could drive people into temporary insanity - if not kill them outright.

But that doesn’t explain who would unleash such horror - or why. Eve’s husband, Roarke, happens to own the bar, yet he’s convinced the attack wasn’t directed at him. It’s bigger than that. And if Eve can’t figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere. Because it’s airborne....

sissymom

typical ruff & tuff Dallas story. I enjoy listening but find I need breaks in between.

Performance slipped in this book

Story was great. The usually superb Susan Erickson was not as crisp and clear in this performance. Several times throughout I could not discern which character was speaking as they began to sound alike. That disrupts my enjoyment as I have to take a second to figure out which character is saying/doing what.

Pretty Good

J. D. Robb did not disappoint in this novel. There is a last minute twist towards the end that I hit round about 12 am and was not able to go to sleep! All in all good narrator, good story, and good ending - it feels like Eve is facing some of her issues in this book tying up loose ends. I enjoyed that she feels protective of Belle instead of being terrified of her which made me feel like she is a little closer to considering kids of her own. Which, I know she has said if the two of them reach that point it would mean the end of the series. I hope it doesn’t as I return to this series quite often.

Always a good story; angst gets tiresome.

Would you listen to Delusion In Death again? Why?

No, because I had to fast forward through parts.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Delusion In Death?

The criminal interegation.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

Rourke

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Any additional comments?

After I've been through most of the series, I have no patience for the time spent
rehashing her terrible childhood.

Another great read from J. D. Robb

Where does Delusion In Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Delusion in Death ranks very highly among all of the other audiobooks I have listenend to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's hard to pick a favorite character in this book, because the richly detailed characters are the lifeblood of the series. The main character, Eve Dallas, is an amazingly complex woman dealing with a past that would have destroyed many people. Her husband, Roarke, is equally complicated. There are many excllent supporting characters, all of which round out the great "ensemble cast" in the book. One of my favorite things about this book is how wonderfully I hear the characters evolving individually and in their relationships with each other.

Any additional comments?

Susan Ericksen is the perfect reader for these books. She uses distinctly different voices which seem to capture the personalities of each of the characters. I can't imagine anyone else reading these books. Another excellent book in an excellent series.

Dallas is on the beat again!

Would you consider the audio edition of Delusion In Death to be better than the print version?

When I have time I like the written word. Hearing the books with Susan Ericksen reading feels like Dallas is telling the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that Dallas is growing through her past just enough so that she can grow more in the next story.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to 5 of Dallas' stories with Susan Ericksen. I enjoy listening to her.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Dallas punched Stella in her dream.

Another fabulous book by J.D. Robb

Where does Delusion In Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

J.D. Robb's books are meant to be read out loud, and Susan Ericksen is a fabulous narrator. Her interpretation of the "In Death" series is so believable that I find I hear her voices in my head when I read the actual books! That said, Delusion in Death is a very strong entry in the series. Readers/listeners new to the series should get a feel for the characters very quickly; Long-time listeners will feel like they're settling in with old friends. The storyline is strong, and the opening to this particular story is dark.

What did you like best about this story?

Summerset, Roarke's father-figure and live-in butler, has always been kind of a mystery, but we get inside his head in this book as he relives some scary moments of the Urban Wars that are running parallel to the mass homicide that opens the story.

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She really brings these characters to life! It's easy to forget there is only one person reading the story. Her voices are so real that I can hear them in my head even when I'm reading the paper version of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! It was really hard to put away.
