Publisher's summary

MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary 21st-century woman.

Or so she thinks...until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death - a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone - Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers.

The quest to find her sister's killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed - a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae.

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane - an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women - closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book - because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds.

Good story, poor narration

The "Barrons" voice was awful. The "Mac" voice was simply annoying... but the story was good enough that I'll continue the series

a favorite

This is one of my favorite series!! normally, I reread it in actual book form, and this listen reminded me why. While the narrator does have a lovely reading voice, she did not fit this book for me. I imagine Mac sounding younger, and Jericho definitely needed more bass. Still, a lovely listen.

Not Barrons Voice

I know we all hear the voices differently when we read on our own but this Barrons imitation was no justice. I think we all hear dark smooth and deadly when reading him.

I really enjoyed Mac voicing, the humor...

As always, huge fan. Love the Highlander series. Love most of the fever series.

AMAZING story line

Really enjoyed this series, bought the next book. Super interesting, excellent world building, interesting characters. a lite touch of slow burn romance, you can tell the author is laying the ground work for romance between the 2 main characters, lots of action and intrigue. the female lead is young and kinda shallow but has the beginnings of character strength tempered by youth. But you can see the ground work being laid for the growth. good narration.

Horrible Reader, Interesting Fae

Reader was horrible. Other than (in general) sounding like a 45 year old with the world's worst accent coach, the worst instance for me was her version of a little girl voice when whining to her Daddy via telephone about being adopted. I wanted to smack her (and this wasn't the first time...AND I'm not prone to violence.) I liked or loved all the characters EXCEPT Mac...uggh. Others have listed the reasons why better than I can. Good to great introduction to the world of the Seelie and Unseelie. Sex scenes would have been better with--you guessed it!--a better reader. I think a different reader would help a great deal with pretty much everything, but even the best couldn't do anything to fix the intrinsically unlikable Mac.

Barrons

The accent for Barrons is atrocious. Otherwise very good. One of my favorite books, ready for the next one.

Love the series

I loved this series, but am not crazy about narrator/narrators. Southern accent was good for Mac, but an older woman trying for a scary Irish male accent kind of messed up things. Otherwise, fun story and gets you hooked for next one in series.

Story 4/Narrator 1/Overall 3

Would you try another book from Karen Marie Moning and/or Joyce Bean?

I would read another Moning book, but Bean as narrator...No way.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was intriguing and I wanted to know more about the Fae, the seers, what happened to Mac's sister...Everything.

What didn’t you like about Joyce Bean’s performance?

She made Mac sound like such a ditz.

Could you see Darkfever being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No.

Any additional comments?

The reviews say the narrator changes in the 4th book. I will keep listening because my friends have told the story is worth dealing with Joyce Bean's ditzy Mac.
