Kresley Cole's books are great, and this one is no exception, but the combination of her writing and Robert Petkoff's amazing narration takes it to a completely new level. His ability to do accents and to differentiate characters is just about the best I've ever heard. He manages to make lines that would sound cheesy coming from another reader, sound perfect and sexy. I really wish Petkoff could narrate every romance book. I don't always love his female voices but I thought his version of Neomi was spot on.
The romance in this story is a slow build for sure, but I loved it. I enjoyed both of the lead characters and thought this twist on a doomed but beautiful ghost haunting the house she died in fresh and interesting.
I hope we get more of the Immortals After Dark stories in Audible quickly. And more publishers need to give work to Robert Petkoff!
I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.
Okay you just have to face it, nobody can do a sexy vampire narration as well as Robert Petkoff. I forget sometimes just how good this series is until I re-visit it. It ranks up there with JR Wards BDB series. My only complaint is that Audible hasn't got the complete series yet, whats taking so long??? This is yet another great paranormal tale that I love to re-visit. Even with several new titles sitting in my library, yet unheard, I find myself drawn back to these books. It's like "I know it's been awhile, but I know you are sooooo good" thing. LOL.
As long as Kresley keeps writing them, and Robert keeps reading them, I'll keep buying them!!! Love Love Love!!!
I love books and love to get lost in the fantasy. I'm always looking for a new good story to bury myself in. :)
3.5 - 4 stars
This was a pretty good story. I liked Conrad and Naomi and thought their story was a good addition to the series.
Naomi used to be a ballet dancer in the 1920s. Naomi did very well as a dancer and even bought and restored a beautiful old estate in New Orleans. Unfortunately, Naomi was killed by an obsessive suitor that wouldn't accept her breaking up with him. Naomi didn't want to die and ended up finding herself stuck as a ghost at her estate for the last 80+ years.
Conrad is the brother of the Wroth Vampires (see books The Warlord Wants Forever & No Rest for the Wicked). He was forcibly changed in to a vampire (to save his life) by a well meaning brother and Conrad didn't take it well. Conrad had been a member of a society that hunted Vampires (unknown to his family) and so when he was forcibly changed in to a Vampire, Conrad became something he hated and it made him hate his brothers. Conrad became a forsaken (a vampire that kills to drink blood) and is slowly going mad from the memories of people he's killed that he's plagued with.
The story starts out with the 3 Wroth brothers having captured Conrad and bring him to an estate they bought to store him at while they try to save him and hopefully cure him of his blood lust. This doesn't go easily as Conrad is out of it and only wants to kill his brothers. Naomi is at the estate and has been stuck there a very long time with little to nothing going on so she's bored....I mean REALLY BORED! When the Wroth brothers show up, Naomi is happy because it means that she wont be bored for a while. Unfortunately, Conrad causes some destruction in the house that upsets Naomi and Naomi wonders if she should really be happy that the vampire brothers will be staying there. She is halted in her plans to get the vampires out when Naomi starts suspecting that Conrad can see her. He seems really nuts though so she's unsure if he did see her or not but she figures it's worth further investigation. Unfortunately for Naomi, Conrad thinks she must be another of his hallucinations and so he tries to ignore her presence. Soon however, Naomi starts to suspect that Conrad can really see her and Conrad starts to realize that Naomi isn't a hallucination.
Conrad's brothers try to help Conrad regain his mind and are surprised at his quick recovery to lucidity. Once his mind becomes clearer, Conrad starts to realize that it seems to be due to Naomi's presence and he starts to suspect that she's something special to him. He wonders if she's supposed to be his Bride but since she's a ghost it's hard to say since she has no physical body to blood him with. In addition to Conrad's insanity issues, he has an issue with others being out to kill him, especially a dream demon that has placed a curse on him and is seeking to kill him. Conrad and Naomi spend time together as he regains his mind but things don't go perfectly and Conrad does overreact to some things which causes a rift between Naomi and Conrad. They manage to get past that but when Naomi brings about changes that cause their relationship and future to change, it propels the couple in to an unsure situation. There's much drama and some very bad times before the end but once everything is settled, Conrad and Naomi end with a well deserved HEA.
This was a pretty enjoyable story. I liked both Conrad and Naomi and liked them as a couple. My main complaint is that I thought the story started out a bit slow. However, once I got past the first part, the plot picked up and had some interesting and unexpected twists as the story progressed. Regardless of it's slow start, it's a good story that I'd recommend. :)
I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again
Wow - couldn't stop listening to this fantastic continuation to a great paranormal romance series.
Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Ghosts and many many more creatures inhabit the world that K.C has created and that R.P. narrates with his magic voices that bring each character to life. It's a tense roller coaster ride for your emotions as the plot throws one twist after another.
Worth a credit? Oh YES and then some - keep em coming Ms. Cole.
Love anything about shifters and lycanthropy. Paranormal romance is my thing! best escape and entertainment I can imagine! :]
I don't know, i rarely have time to sit and read. I can say that without Robert Petkoff's naration i do not think i would enjoy these books as much as i do.
He is the best narrator ever!! I adore all of his performances and i always look for books he has narrated. His ability to do different accents is amazing. He is also quick with the dialoge scenes and can switch up the accents so that i am always certain of who in the story is talking. I can't say enough about his brilliant performance narration! He is awesome!!!
I really enjoy all the Kresley Cole books. They are kind of my guilty pleasure and the second that Audible gets another release i buy it and listen to it straight through, usually only takes me a couple days tops. I rarely do that with the other titles i get. So i guess that means i like her and this narrator a lot. The story usually moves along nicely and there is always at least one or two really good sex scenes. Plus the world of the Lore is fun and interesting and different! GREAT Author with a fabulous immagination! THANKS! :]
Hello, my name is Teresa and I'm an addict.
I'm so loving this series. So far book 2 & 3 are my favorites. This one was great too just not my favorite. I'm excited to listen to the rest of the series and thankful that so many have already been written and is on audible. Narrator rocks and is so sexy he could make a bad book good, thankfully this series is awesome. If you like these books I recommend authors such as Sherrilyn Kenyon, JR Ward, Gena Showalter, Thea Harrison, and Larrisa Ione.
I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY - (paranormal romance) Neomi is the ghost of a famous ballerina trapped in the home in which she once lived. Conrad is a vampire alpha male who is brought to her long-deserted estate to be held as a prisoner. Eventually they become romantically involved, but they have the small problem that she doesn't have a flesh-and-blood body. I liked Neomi and felt sorry for her situation, but I didn't like Conrad, although he was described as gorgeous, hunky and was ultra-devoted to Neomi. He was just too big and vicious for my taste. They were up against impossible odds but were determined to make their relationship work, so that aspect of the story was touching. Their sexual attraction was a long slow build that eventually culminated in a very lo-oo-oonnng explicit scene.
On the negative side, I thought much of the dialogue between the secondary characters was juvenile, almost like silly girl-talk among teenagers, and much of the action/magic toward the end made me think of super-hero cartoons.
PERFORMANCE - Wow, this narrator was really good. Great female voice for Neomi, great accents (Russian, French, Aussie) and his emotional angst for some of the sadder moments was awesome.
OVERALL - (Actual rating 2.5) Meh, it was okay. Be aware there is explicit sex and language.
I love Sci Fi/Fantasy books. The very first author I listened to was Laurell K Hamilton. I love audiobooks they allow me the luxury of books without reading since I don't see well at all.
I have not read the print version of this book but I believe the audio version is the best because the narrator did voices that I thought were perfect and the emotions that he used for the characters were AWESOME.
My favorite character was Conrad Roth. He is my favorite due to the fact we got to see his transformation from fallen Vampire to a feeling, caring, virgin lover. It was so exciting.
I have heard almost all of the books in this series and I think he is a great performer. he makes the characters come to life and he makes sure you know the differences between male and female which I think is really important.
yes, I wish I could have listened to this book in one sitting. However I just would have angered myself because it would have ended quicker
So many books...so little time! :)
Just when you think all hope is lost for Conrad, who has become mad during his years as a vampire and is being held against his will by his brothers in the hopes of improving...Conrad starts to see ghosts, but not just any ghost...
Enter Neomi, who was horribly murdered many many years ago, and is forced to live with it everyday of her ghostly and very lonely life while she watches the lives of the living around her...that is until Conrad, the first human, or vampire that is, sees her.
As they keep each other company in the house they are both trapped in, they are given a second chance with each other...or do they?...
Again, Kresley Cole has such a way of bringing opposites, or not so opposites it may seem, :) together and throws in a few twists that will have your mind spinning! While, this wasn't my favorite, I still really enjoyed it and got a new appreciation for Conrad, who really seemed like a lost cause. Maybe it is possible that people, or vampires, can change after all. ;)
