What the Critics Say

"Scottish romance at its finest, with characters to cheer for, a lush love story, and rousing adventure. I was captivated from the very first page. When it comes to exciting Highlander romance, Julianne MacLean delivers." (Laura Lee Guhrke, author of the Abandoned at the Altar series)

    "Great narrator and story"

    Narrator:

I often base my audible choices on listener comments.

I'm happy I decided to IGNORE the one person who said they disliked the narrator. (See Claimed by the Highlander: Highlander Series #2 reviews, same narrator)

I've heard bad narrators, and Antony Ferguson IS NOT a bad narrator! I suggest that people should make their own decision based on the excerpt that can heard in the book sample, and not base their decision on what one person wrote in a review. (This suggestion is for me as well as everyone else) And I'd like to see that reviewer, from Texas, who probably has a Southern drawl, try to narrate a whole novel with different accents from Scotland and England!

    Story:
Well thought-out story. Really had a hard time putting down my earphones with this one. I didn't give it five stars because, for me, the story has to be exceptional to receive that mark. That said, it was totally worth my credit! And hot!

    "Loved it"
Where does Captured by the Highlander rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

I was sceptical at first but the author takes you on a journey and you find yourself wanting to come along. No vapid and timid female characters here, she gives real depth and feeling to every character and causes you to love or hate them. This is the first book in this series and I enjoyed it so much that I bought the next book to read.

Which character ??? as performed by Antony Ferguson ??? was your favorite?

At first I thought, (groan) male narrator, but I loved it. His rich voice was wonderful to listen to. His Scottish accent needs work but he gives his characters thief own persona and draws you into the plot. I would like to hear him read more romance books.

"4.5 stars! Great Story, though a little angsty"

This series is as good if not better than Monica McCarty's trilogies.
Full of romance, adventure, peril and suspense, I really was impressed with MacLean's writing.
I only wish there had been more scenes to enjoy the couple in love.

    Perfect narration by Antony Ferguson!

    "Enjoyable"

I will be looking for more books by this author. Her work is different. The book has many unexpected twist and turns. The love scenes are pertty exciting. The heroine is intelligent and brave. I fell in love with her Highlander. Definetely an epitomy of a man. I would have preferred a different narrator, but he did an OK work. I would recommend this book to aby person that enjoys Highlander's Romance.

    "Disappointing"
This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The female character was pathetic with unrealistic expectations and demands for her love to be only a gentleman and disregard the warrior side of his persona. It was a bit of an irritating read with weak character development and an unbelievable attraction between the characters. This book is for anyone that wants to read about a man who will change for a woman he met one week prior, rather than being a strong character that is honorable and the smart sassy female recognizes his worth and loves him.

Has Captured by the Highlander turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I won't be purchasing another book by this author.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Narration was good.

What character would you cut from Captured by the Highlander?

The Heroine, and replace her with a stronger and smarter character that will not only give her love when her conditions are met. The hero also needs to be reworked.

    Any additional comments?

If you enjoyed books by Elizabeth Lowell, Monica McCarty, Julie Garwood, or Judith McNaught then you probably won't like this book. As I enjoyed many books by those authors and their characters.

"Highland Warrior and Self- Righteous Snob"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I might if someone was a big fan of highland romances. I wasn't terribly impressed with the book or the narration.

What was most disappointing about Julianne MacLean’s story?

I didn't like that Amelia was so dead set against Duncan having to fight and I hated her constant defense of her fiancé. Duncan had a very strong conscience and I think she should have seen that. I can understand the distaste for fighting, but Duncan was a trained warrior and his life was to protect his clan and family. Those were rough times and every man had to be willing to fight. I liked Duncan and I loved his secret. That made the book worth listening too and provided a nice twist.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Anthony Ferguson isn't may favorite narrator, but he isn't the worst I've ever listened to and in all honesty it was just a couple of characters that I did not like at all. One being the uncle. Mr. Ferguson made him sound like a pretentious, ignorant fool. He really was't ignorant at all. he just wasn't real outspoken.

    Any additional comments?

This book wasn't my favorite but I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I"m a audible addict. My eyes have gotten really bad so I really hadn't read much in the last 10 years until I discoverd books on CD and Audible. Now I'm a fiend. Other than audio books I enjoy my family, work and dabbling on the computer.

"GO ON... USE THAT CREDIT... =]"

My first Julianne MacLean listen. Not my first Antony Ferguson, of course. I loved the narrator. I think Antony does better than most with the female parts.
The story I loved. It was meaty and involved. Better than the majority of romance stories. After awhile some tend to go down the same path. I loved that there was so much texture to this one. Amelia makes Duncan re-think what he feels he's always known. He isn't at all the way he always believed. I know that was a big circle but I hate to be a spoiler.
I enjoyed this as much as I have any. I do hope the series continues to be as riveting as this one.
    Go on... use that credit!!

I have lived in the South since college. I listen to a couple of hundred audiobooks a year, mostly romance and suspense. I have have taken many writing courses over the past half-dozen years and am attempting to write a novel myself. I suspect that learning a lot about the craft of writing and trying to perfect my own writing has made me more conscious of poor writing technique and has made me a tough reviewer.

"A parody of a bodice ripper."

Purple prose ("she felt his tremendous masculine form on top of her"), overwriting, redundant words ("murky gloom"--is there a bright gloom?), cliches ("she fought him with all of her might"), stupid anachronisms ("I'll scream my guts out"). It was all silly, stupid adolescent melodrama. By the second chapter I was ready to throw up.

    "Where is the tenderness?"

First off, I should of never heard Carrington McDuffe's take on the Scottish brogue. Her's sounds like it could be natural. This reader's is more forced. As far as the story goes, I liked it. What I did not like is when the couple does start to have feelings for each other there is no tenderness from him. I get the fact that he's a highlander and will be brusk most of the time. However, even when they were alone there was no tenderness from him. Will I continue with the series, maybe. I am interested in what happens between Angus and his father. Will I listen to the series, I am not so sure. I may decide to read it.
