Editorial reviews

In the New Species series a pharmaceutical company has genetically mixed beast DNA and man DNA with sexy results. In Brawn, the fifth book of the series, one of the muscular creations is sent to live with Becca. Her father, the leader of the human task force rescuing and working with the New Species, forbids her from interacting with him. Things heat up, though, when Brawn and Becca are kidnapped by a lab looking to breed more of Brawn’s kind. With sultry and impassioned voice Vanessa Chambers performs this mix of science fiction, action, and sensual romance that will perk the animal instincts of any warm-blooded listener.

Publisher's summary

Book 5 in the New Species series.

One look at Brawn, and Becca is wondering how he’d look without his clothes. He’s also instantly attracted to her, but has sworn never to touch a human female. They just aren’t sturdy enough for the type of rough sex Brawn enjoys most. When he learns he’ll be living under the same roof with Becca, Brawn simply sees it as a chance to broaden his knowledge of humans. Hopefully he can do so while keeping his hands off her.…

His good intentions go astray when they’re both kidnapped and locked together in a cage. Brawn finds himself reliving a nightmare when he’s once again subjected to breeding experiments at the hands of New Species’ enemies - who will use Becca to get what they want. Brawn and Becca will have to depend on each other if they hope to survive.

Listener Advisory: While each New Species book is a standalone, the greatest enjoyment will come from reading them in series order.

Continues to be a pleasant listen!

I appreciated the characterization for Brawn and for Becca. There is a pattern with Laurann's book, each of the main characters assume how the other feels, rather than talking it out, sharing their individual thoughts and it can be quite irritating. I'd like to see less of that in her story lines for the New Species. I think LD was trying to make that attempt in this book. It still kept my interest and I do NOT regret buying it and listening to it. So, there is a predictability in LD's writing style. But, I'm still eager to listen to the remaining books in this series.
She does show diversity in the various series she's created and I find it's nice to move to the Cyborg series and then back to the New Species, just so that predictability can be broken up a bit.
The narrator for this series is superb! The story line wasn't as strongly developed as others in the series has been, but there is action, suspense, intrigue and of course as a book listed in Ellory's Cove, there's Passion.
It's worth the credit.

Awesome Conflict/fight scenes Premise same

Still like this series due to great conflict/fight scenes. But still there is NEVER any mention of any other race other than the new species males & the pale human female with long hair (anglo) . No mention of a reporter, cop, waitress, healthcare worker or any other background character of different race just to throw in some inclusion for those non white reader/listeners. So far each book is about a male species falling for a human female (always anglo with pale skin & long hair age around 30 ish) STILL the stories grip & the conflict is great. In 2015 I'm surprised that there is no inclusion of other ethnics/races in stories but good writing is still good writing.. Will continue to follow series and spend my money for them. Four stars was for great story without ANY diverse characters weaved in the story. I wish that the author would consider making a MINOR character with dark skin. In America everyone runs into someone with DARK skin in their day to day activity. Unless you live isolated & not in touch with the global world.

Mmmmm...yummy

What did you love best about Brawn?

I love the part with Becca struggling on her on after being separated from Brawn and needing help, but no willing to accept it. Trying to be vague to avoid spoilers.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked the heroine, Becca. She was strong and independent, but not perfect, perhaps too stubborn, and she gets drunk when she is frustrated, doesn't become a perfect martyr.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She is an excellent narrator...until she attempts anyone's voice. Becca sounds like a valley girl at times, and the guys sounded almost comical.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, because I love the story so much. I can't tell you how many times I have read it prior to this.

Any additional comments?

Say what you will about Laurann Dohnner's stories' eerie similarities to a certain other novelist (as in, even some characters have the same names, there is the same backstory, etc.), she is an entertaining writer. She is formulaic like none other! But Brawn is good, as is Slade and Valiant. The others are a little too cookie cutter for me, which is a pet peeve of mine. I can't recommend reading or listening to many of her works, but this one is a favorite and guilty pleasure.

A Welcomed Addition to the Series!

Would you consider the audio edition of Brawn to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version. I enjoy listening to audio versions.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Brawn?

His plowing down Slade and Tiger when they tried to stop him from seeing Becca.

What about Vanessa Chambers’s performance did you like?

Her narration was great, as evidenced in previous installments.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have, I would have.

Any additional comments?

The only criticism I have for this book, which prevented me from giving it 5 stars is at times, Becca's character was very annoying. Talk about how opposites attract....Sometimes, non-communication and assumptions can be heartbreaking.

So Very Steamy

I’ve read this book so many times! It’s one of my favorites from Laurann Dohner! I love the secret pregnancy (and of course, species romance) twist to the classic love story! Becca is such a smart, brave character who is very relatable! And Brawn is such a sweet hottie! The narrator only enhances the story!

Brawn and Jessica

Unfortunately, it's more of the same. Words and whole sentences changed throughout the book. I wonder if Ms Dohner has any idea how badly her books are mangled. Please, check yourselves.

Another Great Story In New Species!

I really love this series, it full of steamy sex, romance, and lots of suspense that will have your heart racing.

Brawn and Becca really have to work together when they are captured and locked in a cage. Brawn who's been a captive before is familiar with situation and is very angry but he helps Becca coupe as she has never been subject to this kind of treatment. Their capture brings them closer together but when the are freed, Becca's father ensures Brawn stays away from Beccca that is until a big secrete is reveal that will change both their lives.

Each story has intense heart pounding suspense and steamy sex with lots of attractions between the main characters.

I loved Brawn, he is another one of my favorite characters!

Great Read

As usual Laurann does a fabulous job of keeping you interested in this book number 5 of her New Species series. She does such a good job of developing her characters, you feel like you are right there with them. It is getting hard to say enough good things about Laurann's New Species series because each one is just as good as the last, if not better because she brings in new, creative stories with each book. Love her writing and her creativity as well as her descriptions of each person, place and thing. Especially love how she hooks me on the next book by giving a preview of the first chapter of the next book. Has me hooked from the beginning. Love her work.

I liked but not as much.

Loved Brawn. Didn’t like Becca as much. Seemed too bratty or is that the intended personality given her dad’s position. Idk. Didn’t leave me wanting more. Well. On to the next book - Wrath. 👍🏼

Audible gives this story more depth and impact.

Oh my. What these two go through really does come across well in audible.
Once again I thought some of the other character voices felt wrong.
BOOK REVIEW
My review is no longer a verified one as I have the older published version of this book.
I love rereading this series and do so often. They are just as enjoyable no matter how many times you read them.
This was a great story but also very sad as we see firsthand the type of treatment New Species were and some still are, subjected too.
Brawn does not interact with humans and believes human females are not strong enough to be with sexually.
When they are kidnapped he is forced into close proximity with Becca which breaks down his defences.
Becca falls for Brawn at first sight but her father is a very controlling man and also a top military officer working with New Species.
When Becca and Brawn are saved after being kidnapped her father interferes which forces Becca to have to deal with a problem on her own.
I do not want to give anything away but I reread this series often and this is one of my favourite books.
I love the way Brawn is goaded into acting by his friends to claim Becca. Such male behaviour.
I have reviewed these books previously but there has been a problem with reviews disappearing. I understand how important reviews are for authors and as it is no hardship to read them once again, I am writing reviews as I work through the series.
