Publisher's summary

Diana Gabaldon's immensely popular Outlander saga soars to new heights with this seventh novel, which takes listeners on a breathtaking journey to 1777 America.

Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army.

And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

Epic in scope and featuring a colorful cast that includes many legendary figures - including hero-turned-traitor Benedict Arnold and bawdy statesman Benjamin Franklin - An Echo in the Bone is a thrill from start to finish.

Historical Fiction with the spice of Time Travel

As one who loves learning through the window of Historical Fiction literature, when I stopped being able to read due to increasing blindness, it took me a time to "get used" to listening to my books. Also, I had to find out what I liked to listen to. I "came of age" as a consumer of audio books and downloaded books when I came across both Diana Gabeldon and Davina Porter. What masterpiece. I get it now. The prose-poetry of Gabeldon read by the incredibly talented actress/reader Porter was not just a replacement for the reading that I loved, but something more, or certainly as good. In its own category, the way Storytelling professionally is different from seeing a live theatre production. Not really something you can compare apples to apples... It is wonderful to have people who are firmly a part of the ages they live in plus the views and experiences of Claire and Brianna especially, but others who have lived both placesI have been engrossed in the lives of Jamie Fraser and Claire... almost a day by day account of the lives of people 200 years ago in many countries, many races, socio-economic levels for several weeks. I have listened to the abridged versions of the two books in this series that are caught up in red tape for the unabridged audible.com versions, I would very much like to know if/how Jemmy and Rodger get back or not to Brianna! I am looking forward, fingers crossed, that Gabeldon and Porter will bring the world of Jamie and Claire, Brianna and Mac and Ian Murry (Jr.) and his mother and so forth back into my world for another several hundred hours if at all possible! Listening to books read well is not something I'd considered, anymore than was writing by dictation into a computer. However, the silver lining of any problem is great learning if one is open to it. What a gift it is to find an art form that is in its relative childhood, with many ways to grow, that moves me in a new way. Thanks to the writers, readers, producers and to audible.com!

Makes me anxious for the next book...

Would you listen to An Echo in the Bone again? Why?

Oh, yes. I will listen to the whole series again when the next book is ready to come out.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way that the stories of the two parts of the family in different times and different parts of the world were still woven together in a credible way.

Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?

Jamie, of course, but Ian too. I love the Scots accents.

Any additional comments?

I felt like this book "left you hanging" more than the others in the series. I sure hope the next book isn't too far away.

I hope it never ends

too much has been left open so that I need to go right to the next book. the comments following the end of the story by the author were fascinating. it was also fun to hear Davina Porter speak as herself.

Wonderful, heart-breaking, and beautiful

This novel and its predecessors have been my companions through miles of travel, more than one sleepless night, several knitted projects, and a considerable number of menial tasks. The story of the Frasers, MacKenzies, and their families has captivated my heart and imagination. Thanks to the author's talent at painting with words on the page and the narrator's talent at painting with words spoken aloud, I am enchanted and hopelessly lost in this world. This particular novel is one of the best in the series, as difficult to part with as the first was. I am rushing to the next one like Claire into Jamie's arms.
