An all-consuming desire....

"A unique romance - it truly stands on its own!" (Sherrilyn Kenyon, New York Times bestselling author)
After my huge disappointment with the narration of Cole's prequel The Warlord Wants Forever, I was ready to be disappointed again. How wrong I was!
A romance star is born and his name is Robert Petkoff.
I'm not even half way through the audiobook A Hunger Like No Other and I felt compelled to write a review. In this first book in the Immortals After Dark series, many characters are introduced and most are female. This could be a challenge for a male narrator but Petkoff does not disappoint. Each female character I've heard so far is recognizable and distinct. And his characterization of the male lead Lachlain is spot on; his Scottish brogue is smooth and sexy. Timing and pacing is excellent. Petkoff is an accomplished narrator, but this appears to be his first step into the Romance genre. I hope he continues to narrate this series.
I loved this book when I read it and knew I had to get the audio when it came out. What a surpirse with the narrator... he is awesome with his rough and deep Scottish accent! I can't wait until the next book. IF HE CONTINUES NARRATING THIS SERIES, I'M GOING TO RUN OUT OF PANTIES!!!!!!! AND TALK ABOUT A "THRILL OF THE CHASE". HE CAN CHASE ME!
This has been one of my favorite series and I was so excited when I saw it on audible. I hope she will be adding all the books in the series to audible soon. The narrator did a great job he sounded exactly how I pictured he would. Please don"t make us wait too long for the next book Kaderin's story is so good and so is Mariketa's and well I haven't read a Kresley cole book that wasn't kicka**.
I'm just here for the laughs!
I've already read what's available of this series, and I love them enough to give the audiobooks a whirl. The only comment I really have to offer is in reference to the narration.
Robert Petkoff did an wonderful job with the male voices, and his accents were fantastic, but when it came to the female characters, I just didn't buy it. His voice is intensely masculine, and he really tried, but the women, especially Emma, came off sounding super breathy and and still male. I truly enjoyed his Lachlain (especially in the steamier scenes. Really, wow!) but women aren't his forte. Hopefully Mr. Petkoff can fix this, because in most areas his narration was amazing.
It's definitely not a deal breaker for me, but it was a bit distracting.
I really like Ms. Cole's take on mythical races and loved the book when it came out. I was a bit skeptical about listening because IMO male narrators of romance are usually very good or very bad, Bad more often than not. When I listened to the sample, I knew immediately that I would not be disappointed. Mr. Petkoff does a great job emoting and his accents are wonderful. His take on the females in the book had me laughing to myself most of the time - especially his version of Nyx. I truly hope he is chosen to narrate the rest of this series. Can't wait to hear what's next.
Loved this book. What a great story. Wonderful characters, wonderful story line, hot and steamy sex. Not only were the main characters, Emma and Lachlain great, all the secondary characters were too. I love all the different types of "beings", Lykae, Valkyrie, Vampires and so much more. I am looking forward to the next book. I do wish there had been more dialogue in the book but the story was so good and it wasn't full of only thoughts and feelings repeated over and over as some authors write when there is not much dialogue. So, A+ for a story well written.
I have almost started this series so many times and didn't because my preference of narrator is female, but I have to say Robert Petkoff did a fantastic job, and I don't think this book would have been as good narrated by a female, unless is it was Tavia Gilbert, she can narrate anything and its wonderful in my opinion. (although I do think Jim Frangione did a great job on the wonderful Black Dagger Brotherhood series, which is also the only other male narrator I have listened too)
Credit worthy? 100% YES!!
I totally recommend to book to any PRN reader/listener
Reading is a must-have ESCAPE...
Holy Crap! The first three-four chapters is intent on putting readers on the edge of their seats. Story revolves around a 1200 year-old Lykae (kind of werewolf) King who has been waiting to find his mate. He finds her alright but she's not what he expects... instead of another Lykae, he gets a half Valkyrie/half vampire - and a sheltered one at that. Lachlain is blunt and quite primitive. At first, he's not beyond man handling, but then he realizes the error of such methodology. She resists the pull of desire. All the while the full moon looms adding undo pressure.
I noticed this book in the First Book in a Series Sale, so I gave it a try. As an avid paranormal romance reader, it is becoming harder to be surprised. I haven't put it down yet and I've only a few chapters left. Full of surprises and addicting!
Robert Petkoff's interpretation of ALL characters is not only consistent, but he does one hell of a portrayal of Lachlain especially during intimate moments.
Best...The plot was original. The last female vampire half breed, hidden from the vampires and is the mate to a lyken. Least...The abusive relationship. These weren't character flaws, but thought out lies and coerced/manipulated sexual acts on a woman.
The accents were good, but I didn't like the female voices very much. Over all it is hard for a man to sound like a woman, so I compared him to other men and scored from there.
The first half of the book deals with finding Emmaline and traveling. This is an abusive first half with alot of lying and manipulation (mentally and sexually). The second half, is set in the home of Locklain, where he continues to lie, 'buy' her gifts to win her over and even get her drunk to have sex with her. Everything a mother fears in a relationship for her daughter. I felt this book was more for the 'forced' fantasy reader. Where the woman wants to run and the man chases her down. Although there isn't rape in the story, I found that there wasn't complete complience and consent in the acts...which I struggled with. When a girl says 'no' it doesn't mean 'maybe'. This story may give some that impression.
Wow, loved this audio. It was on from start to finish. Great story & mix of characters, great range of emotions, few suprises, overall enjoyable. Narration was great.
Wowsers... Robert Petkoff narrates brilliantly! His characterisations are distinct and personal, his accents are excellent (no Scottish turning Indian here(or is that just mine:-)) and his inflection, especially during intense moments is extremely captivating, engaging and... Well.... HOT!
I feel like I'm listening to a secret intimate recording (at (those HOT) times) or a play rather than a reading. Superb.
As for the story, it was quite good although a little long and drawn out for my taste (and ADHD) I liked the intensity of the building relationship between Emma and Lachlan and the good amount of action and intrigue within the not so usual vampire/werewolf/valkyrie back story. Looking forward to reading more.
"Loved this book exciting well read and written."
Loved this book exciting well read and written. Even though it was read by a man he managed to change his voice to suit the different characters very well.
All of it was fab flowed well and had all emotions working.
Voices for each character
Just loved it all
Brilliant Book cant wait to read Book 2
"This is my first Kresley Cole book"
Disturbing, Funny, Hot
How Emmaline changes from a doormat into a headstrong and kickass woman
His female voices where as distintive as the male and his scottish accent was well done. And oh wow can he do hot and sexy ;-)
The only reason it didn't get full ratings was the start. I almost stopped listening because the relationship started off abusive and that was what I found a little disturbing.I'm glad i kept going however as it got so much better
Fantastic, Addictive, Unmissable
In a way, there isn't another book like this. The book holds it's own in so many different ways and I couldn't think to compare it with another.
The narration of the story is done incredibly well, and he certainly can do the accents. His only downfall is, there are so many female characters, and whilst that would be difficult for most people to do, he doesn't have the right voice to do a female voice.
A love hotter than any flame.
The story itself is amazing, I 1st had this in paperback, I read it over and over again. Unfortunately now I don't get as much time to read, but having it in audio form means that i now can pretty much take it anywhere. I'd recommended to listen to this book at least once. There are some really hilarious moments, and the relationship between Emma and Lachlain will keep you on the edge of your seat 1 minute, and falling madly in love the next. Kresley Cole transports you into a whole new world, one with plenty of mystery, suspense, laughter, and of course passionate romance. Even if this isn't your sort of book, there's bound to be at least 1 in the immortals after dark series that will enchant you as it has me.
"I liked this book"
I didn't enjoy his character in the beginning... made me annoyed and uninterested... but he grew on me...
"Once again Simply amazing"
Yes because the series is just outstanding
there are none
compared to anyone else Robert petkoff is the best
yes i just couldn't stop listening
Nicely paced well read
Really enjoyed listening to it
Will now seek out sequels and give them a go
"Awe-inspiring mythical romance at it's best"
The three words would be - Original, Imaginative and Engrossing
Upon scenting Emmaline, his long awaited mate, Lachlain's sheer will and need to get to her at whatever the cost to himself.
Lachlain at Val Hall, reunited with his brother, saving his beloved Emmaline - confronting the Valkyrie - watching the video of Emmaline's encounter with her father.
Ran through a whole gamut of emotions - frustration, pity, desire, sheer fun, sadness, despair - so easy to see the characters as real people, as they might be outside of fantasy. Despite the fact we're reading about a Werewolf and a Vampire/Valkyrie trying for a relationship, the fundamental issues are the same for everyone - finding that one special person - our soulmate - keeping a loved one safe, protecting, nurturing, giving each other space to grow.
Inspiring. Not a pretty world, the world of the Lore, but then the real world isn't that pretty either! We make the most of what we have, enjoy the beauty as we find it.
"New Author to Me - Loved It"
I will listen it again. The strength of the writing shines though.
There were some very raw sexual scenes which is not something I would normally listen to but the strength of the story carried them easily. I will be trying more books in the series in the hope they don't become formulaic.
"Erotic but frustrating!"
Very descriptive and very good story, but I felt Lachlean's frustration! In the end I just wanted them to get together properly and I was very relieved at the end!!!
He's brilliant! I loved his scottish accent really good!! Great performance!
"The first of many favourites.."
I have read all the paperbacks and now I am reliving them again on Audio; what a pleasure! Robert Petkoff is wonderful. He enhances the book to a higher level and I have found a greater joy in listening to the wonderful, witty and exciting content. Kresley Cole is so clever as she can make you choke up one moment and laugh out loud the next.
Wonderful start to a series that I am collecting one by one, in order is a must, for me at least!
