"A week at Trysting had its trials", Leigh thought. A round of odd jobs with Aunt Elvira, bad poetry with Aunt Rosande, and bouts of hay fever with Aunt Dolly were not his idea of a restful holiday. Nor did his cousin Raymond, who seemed sunk in gloom, help matters. Or a mystery Leigh could not fathom about someone burning down the old house and the disappearance of the family silver. But meanwhile there was a Hampshire summer, and there was Auriol. Auriol, Leigh thought, was lovely - but he didn’t want to live on eggs.

Thank goodness I discovered Elizabeth Cadell!
River Lodge, published in 1948, is a witty gem, wonderfully narrated by the author’s daughter, Janet Reynolds.
Ruth and Roger Mallard inherited River Lodge and have turned it into a guest house. The characters within the first weeks guests are written with humor and charm.
This book is a favorite of mine. I’ve been a long time fan and always enjoy the subtle, clever comedy the author employs in all her writing.

Of its time but offensive now
Roger is a nasty bully, and yet is described as near perfect man. So many stereotypes and, aside from Brenda, no one I would like to spend a week with. This book didn't age well.
