Publisher's summary

The saga of the Imager Quaeryt, commander in the forces of Lord Bhayar, reaches a new climax as the great struggle to unify the continent of Lydar enters its final phase. Only the land of Khel remains uncommitted to Bhayar's rule.

Their decision could mean a lasting peace or more conflict across an already war-ravaged realm. While the conqueror of Bovaria awaits emissaries to arrive with news of Khel's decision, other weighty matters occupy Bhayar; his sister, Velora; and her husband, Quaeryt - not the least of which is the fulfillment of Quaeryt's dream to create the world's first Imager academy, where the magical abilities of these powerful casters may be honed, managed, and put to the service of the common good.

But before that dream may be realized or Khel's fateful choice made known, the spectre of high treason threatens to unravel all that Quaeryt has achieved, catapulting him toward a fateful confrontation with Bhayar's most powerful military leaders.

This is another great story in The Imager Portfoli

This whole series is spell binding. The continuation of characters, and following their lives through the story line is captivating. I can never wait for the next book in the series to see what the next adventure will be. I'm sure people with a military knowledge would enjoy that aspect of the stories, however, that being said. . . . it's a real page turner anyway.

More Imager, less "Nameless"

Book 8 of the Imager series, or book 5 of the "Quaeryt" story arc.

This book continues the story of the founding of Solidar, as Lord Bhayar unifies the continent of Lydar, with Commander Quaeryt leading his Imagers to overcome treason within the forces of Bhayar.

In this volume, Quaeryt continues to move towards building a Scholarium where all Imagers and their families can live and learn while supporting the common good of all. But first he must do battle with elements within the armies of Lord Bhayar that want to put control of the continent in the hands of the army and of the High Holders.

The action level is about typical for this series, but there is thankfully much less of the overt sermonizing. I continue to find the reading of William Dufris excellent, though there are occasional times where I lose track of whether it's Quaeryt or Bhayar speaking towards the second half of the book.

Paying for Success

I think the biggest feature I liked about this book was that Modesitt settled down the battles and went back to writing about the political. There are prices that everyone is now paying for the success that Quaeryt achieved and plans to be made. This book has far less action that the other Imager books but after Battalion I was personally grateful. Yet Quaeryt does seem to comfortable in any role in this book. I felt that if Modesitt have wanted this book be a wrap and it could be a penultimate to the Quaeryt tale.

William Dufris continues to provide a strong narration. After 7 previous books in the Imagers there is not surprise.

magnificent ending to a fantastic story arc!

L.E Modesitt Jr is my favourite author. I have loved every book and story arc in his magic of recluce and imager books. the story told in books 4-9 is my all time favourite. Qaeryt is the best main character and the amazing supporting characters are amazing. you will laugh and cry and be on the edge of your seat throughout.
