Publisher's summary

An instant New York Times best seller

A timely and passionate call to action for engaging with our current political moment, from the Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer-songwriter and New York Times best-selling author Tori Amos.

Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. From her unnerving depiction of sexual assault in “Me and a Gun” to her post-September 11 album, Scarlet’s Walk, to her latest album, Native Invader, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political.

Amos began playing piano as a teenager for the politically powerful at hotel bars in Washington, DC, during the formative years of the post-Goldwater and then Koch-led Libertarian and Reaganite movements. The story continues to her time as a hungry artist in Los Angeles to the subsequent three decades of her formidable music career.

Amos explains how she managed to create meaningful, politically resonant work against patriarchal power structures - and how her proud declarations of feminism and her fight for the marginalized always proved to be her guiding light. She teaches us to engage with intention in this tumultuous global climate and speaks directly to supporters of #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as young people fighting for their rights and visibility in the world.

Filled with compassionate guidance and actionable advice - and using some of the most powerful, political songs in Amos’ canon - this audiobook is for anyone determined to steer the world back in the right direction.

essential for artists

Moving, beautiful, songs heard anew as poetry, and most of all inspiring. Be ready to have the muses lift you into Tori's dimension while listening. Every word carefully considered. Her message is essential for artists, feminist, and those in the resistance of tyranny. Enjoy.

A must for any ears with feet

This is such an experience. You get the emotion when you have this audio. She even goes off book for a moment. She also has such a calm and soothing speaking voice. I can’t say enough except to just get this audio book already. It is with it!!!

Put the listening speed at 1:20

I am not sure if Tori has always talked this slow or recently developed the most affected reading voice possible, but the book got better when I turned the speed up to a normally paced speaking voice. For the dramatic reading of lyrics, the skip 30 seconds is helpful. Despite these annoyances, I was impressed with the content. Tori presents herself as a very adept politico. She seamlessly weaves in personal touches that help explain her political positions and it certainly adds texture to her music portfolio. I found it engaging, even if at times eyerollingly self-important -- special shout out to her description of playing live shows as the worst of her ego shining through. Even in my critique, I appreciate her perspective, her spiritual musings, her artistic ideology. She is a force even when her self-awareness gets shy.

Songs explained

This book is so important. Hearing how Tori takes current political issues and weaves it into a song, with the muses’ help, was so empowering. As an Ear with Feet, I knew some of the background stories to the early songs, but hearing Tori tell the stories in her own voice was so special.

Superb example of using art to resist darkness

Tori, I too have felt the energy from the center of the galaxy. I felt immense love. I knew I needed to share with others that the path is through loving yourself and others, forgiving yourself and others and helping vulnerable people ♥
I fell to my knees, shaking with the realization that I am a part of Mother Nature. We must resist all dark forces that would destroy our Earth. We must overcome Trump. I will use my voice, and thank you for using your art as a space of resistance. I love you, Tori. Happy Mother's Day 💓

Stellar performance by Amos

I highly recommend this audiobook. Sometimes Tori goes ‘off book’, adding words or repeating lines. She brings a passion to the reading that really moves the story along; in one moment her voice will waver with emotion and in the next she’s using a character voice to represent the muses, her past self, a music producer, or George W. Bush. I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to hear this incredibly personal, political content from Tori Amos herself.

Amazing listen!

So entertaining in so many ways. It covers every topic beyond music, history, politics, sociology, relationships, tragedies and triumphs of individuals and the world as a whole. I feel like I now know Tori better than I should know anyone that I have never met. I walk away not only a fan of her music but an even bigger fan of Tori as a person. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself.
