Publisher's summary

Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis' forceful and accessible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three separate books, The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis sees as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the center of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice".

Critic reviews

"Geoffrey Howard's performance is superb; he is clear and unhurried, giving just the right emphasis and/or inflection....Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work." (Library Journal)

Every thinking human should listen to this

I love how Lewis clearly, concisely laid out logical reasoning for his beliefs. This book has changed the way I view Christianity and human existence.

So deep I’d like another go

I love the book overall and plan to re-listen. I wanted to be able to think about the concepts as it was being read but had a hard time keeping up so I slowed the Audio speed down and that helped a lot. The narrator is great tho.

Timeless wisdom

From the pen of a man who was a determined atheist and who later embraced Christianity flows a fully developed and powerful illustration of what it is to live as a Christian.

Wisdom from the past

Many of us of a certain age have enjoyed CS Lewis‘s narrative fiction works like chronicles of Narnia. But it is when we delve into his more apologetic work that we see who the man really was. These ancient wisdom still apply as they did in the 1940s as they do now. Even nearly 100 years later, the truth of the man’s words still resonate.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

C.S. Lewis in this book explains how he became a Christian and his views on how Christians should live and interact with the rest of the world.
His turn from being an atheist to becoming a Christian is fascinating to me, for he involved all his knowledge and logic to debate with himself that God doesn't even exist, only to come to the conclusion that not only is there a God, but that Jesus Christ is his Son and Saviour of the world.
His simple comparisons to everyday functions and duties each of us perform for our families or our jobs make his explanations of how to live the Christian life very plain.
I recommend this book to both Christians and non-Christians. As Lewis put it, you cannot simply look at Christ as a great teacher or philosopher; He doesn't allow it. Once you understand Jesus Christ you only have two choices: to dismiss Him as a raving insane lunatic, or to bow down and worship Him as the Saviour of the world.

Great in audio format

This is a book that has been on my shelf for years and I have never been motivated to get through it. However, this particular book works extremely well in the audio format. After a slightly slow start, I found myself enthralled and listened for many hours straight. It is also a book that I plan to listen to again and again over the years so it was an excellent use of a book credit. C.S. Lewis presents a very logical and detailed analysis of the existence of God and validity of Christianity. I highly recommend the book to anyone searching for the truth as well as to those of us who can grow from a well reasoned argument for faith in God and Christ.

awesome, yet oft-abused, work

I listened to this book in audio format from Audible, and although I had read it multiple times--the audio format added a whole new rich texture that I enjoyed thoroughly. Lewis' clarity never ceases to amaze me and strengthen my faith. One thing I do want to note though is how Lewis is misused. Often I hear many Christians state (sometimes as an excuse to avoid taking a position on the things that God intends us to study) that they just practice "mere Christianity." Lewis would not have approved. He never intended his work to be used in that manner. I suggest these "mere Christians" re-read this book and take to heart Lewis' admonition that the basic principles he elucidated are not intended to be a stopping place, but rather a juncture that we all pass through in the "hall" on the way to the "room" that will be our home. We are not intended to remain in the milk of "mere Christianity," but to move on to the rich and bountiful meat of deep study and immersion into the joy of knowing God.

Pillar of Christian Philosophy

I read this book because I am an avid fan of Peter Kreeft, who is a convert philosophy professor at Boston College. Dr. Kreeft teaches this book in a couple of his courses, and suggests that all Christians should read this book on a regular basis. Truth is revealed by God in scripture and holy tradition, but the same truth can also be revealed by reason. This book is a brilliant attempt at the latter. My only critique is that this narrator is apparently running while narrating as evidenced by his audible gasps before every sentence.
