They were constantly revised as new groups came into existence and took their final form only after Ouspensky moved from London to New York, where he continued to teach from 1941 to 1947.

The psychology Ouspensky sets forth in these introductory lectures has existed in one form or another for thousands of years and, unlike modern psychology, studies man from the point of view of what he may become. Once a man realizes how little control he has over his reactions to external circumstances and internal stimuli, he may wish to find a way to become free of this mechanical way of living. Ouspensky describes how a man must work simultaneously on his knowledge and his being to find inner unity and why although his development depends on his own efforts, this is very difficult to achieve without guidance from a school.

A beautiful interpretation by Mr Blake of an Ouspensky classic.

This audiobook is so well read, it could only have been done by a person who has devoted his life to The Fourth Way. Such a person is Anthony Blake, a living teacher of the Work, and disciple of J. G. Bennett. Listening to it is like being in class with him. The narrator’s oral interpretation of these complex and vital ideas brings them alive. Anyone can read a book aloud, but it is rare to find a reader who presents the intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic totality of a writer’s ideas. Mr Blake does this with his presentation of Ouspensky’s lectures, and it a gift to anyone who listens to it.

This book is a must-read for people who have achieved a good life, and are looking to go beyond the good life towards development or evolution of being and understanding that transcends and includes our ordinary worldly life.
